Chapter 2: The Void and the Voice
Adam's first sensation was the absence of everything—no light, no sound, no weight to his body. Just an endless void, cold and oppressive, stretching infinitely in all directions. He tried to move, but his limbs felt disconnected, as though his body no longer obeyed him.
Is this… death? he thought, his voice swallowed by the silence.
Then, it came.
The words echoed in the void, clear and mechanical, cutting through the emptiness like a razor. Adam's mind reeled. He tried to speak, but the words choked in his throat.
Pain—searing, white-hot pain—ripped through his entire being. It felt like every molecule of his body was being torn apart and rebuilt simultaneously. Memories and sensations not his own flooded into his mind: flying over cities, bending time, walking through walls. Each one burned into his consciousness like brands.
"Stop!" he screamed, though no sound escaped.
Adam's blood boiled, glowing bright blue as though it were liquid energy coursing through his veins. He could feel power—limitless, overwhelming power—seeping into every corner of his being. But with it came something darker, something that felt alien and uncontrollable.
Before he could make sense of the voice's cryptic messages, the void around him began to warp and shift. Colors bled into existence—blue, red, green—swirling chaotically until they formed a tunnel of light.
"Wait, what does that mean?" Adam shouted, his voice finally finding its strength.
The system ignored him. The tunnel grew brighter and brighter until it consumed everything. Then, darkness.
When Adam opened his eyes again, the air was thick with smoke and the acrid smell of gunpowder. He lay sprawled on the ground, his body heavy and unresponsive. Around him, the sound of distant explosions and shouted orders filled the air. He forced himself to sit up, his movements sluggish and clumsy.
The landscape before him was like something out of a history book: soldiers in gray uniforms marched past rubble-strewn streets, their boots crunching on shattered stone.
"Where the hell am I?" Adam muttered, his voice hoarse.
Before he could gather his thoughts, the system's voice returned, cold and detached.
"What? No, wai—"
The words were cut off as Adam's vision blurred, his body collapsing to the ground. The world faded once more into nothingness.
