Chapter 89: Dark Days
Pov General,
"Diablora-sama, there's a problem. Evelyn Longbottom has freed herself from the global charm I cast."
Sloth rushed to the mysterious figure after Evelyn's freed.
"Don't worry. Your charm was at the same level as when I first brought it here. If she managed to break free from it, she could just as easily overcome yours. But there's no real urgency — we're nearing the end of the year, and the school's mandrakes will soon reach maturity as per the initial plan."
Satisfied with the response, Sloth returned to his rest.
"Now, let's see how you'll solve this case, Evelyn."
The mysterious figure conjured a glass of wine and swirled it thoughtfully.
Back to Hogwarts,
According to a house-elf's account, who had been warned by a teacher, the basilisk approached the library and petrified Hermione and Penelope through indirect contact via a mirror.
Marie, who was present, closed her eyes and attempted to fight the basilisk.
Numerous bloodstains were discovered, as well as scales from the creature.
There was also significant material damage: a completely collapsed wall, fifty pounds of books totally destroyed and irrecoverable, and a thousand books severely damaged but still readable, though missing portions of information.
The commotion attracted Peeves out of curiosity, along with several ghosts who inadvertently made eye contact with the basilisk and were petrified.
The elf arrived and was forced to guide Marie's hand to block the basilisk's gaze, preventing his own death.
Many hoped that with all the bloodshed, the basilisk might be dead, but deep down, they knew the grim truth.
Every student was afraid, even the older ones. Among the many victims was a prefect, Penelope Deauclaire.
The fall of someone so exemplary and respected shook the confidence of even the upper years.
The person most affected by the attack, however, was Evelyn.
Her eyes were red every day, and though she hardly paid attention in class, she still managed to answer correctly, even when distracted, whenever a teacher called on her.
She spent most of her time focused on a notebook or taking notes. Anyone who tried to read them would find them nearly incomprehensible.
She had also stopped giving support classes, but it didn't matter since no one attended them anymore.
Every day, for an hour, she went to visit Marie's petrified body.
One day, while passing by Hermione's body, she noticed a piece of paper clutched in her hand.
She took it and read:
"You are far too smart and curious for your own good."
She cast an Incendio spell on the paper, burning it.
Several other events followed, including Hagrid's arrest, accused once again of opening the Chamber of Secrets as he had been fifty years earlier.
That same night, Dumbledore was removed from office by a majority vote of the school board.
Harry and Ron, present at the scene, followed advice to investigate the Chamber but nearly lost their lives in the process.
Fortunately, the enchanted car that had driven them to school reappeared and saved them just in time.
The day Professor McGonagall announced that the restoration potion would be ready by the next day, Ginny Weasley was kidnapped by the Heir of Slytherin and locked in the Chamber of Secrets.
This was a devastating blow to everyone.
Harry and Ron who could never read the paper did not know where the secret room was that she was the monster. They sank into despair, knowing Ginny was in mortal danger and that no one seemed able to save her.
In the long castle corridors, the sound of determined footsteps echoed. The steps belonged to Evelyn with her katana at the waist, who carried a box and had a resolute expression on her face.
She ran into Lockhart, who appeared to be hurriedly packing his belongings.
"Oh, Miss Longbottom, what are you doing out here? No one is allowed to be in the halls!"
Evelyn ignored him, brushing past without a word. Seizing the moment, she tripped him with a swift sweep of her foot, sending him sprawling onto the floor.
Reaching the second-floor corridor, she stopped at the sink in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom.
"Open," she commanded in Parseltongue.
A hissing sound escaped her lips, and a hidden passage revealed itself. Without hesitation, Evelyn jumped into the opening, determined to reach the Chamber of Secrets.
