Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Dealing with the Hunter
While Haruto was thinking about what to do, a sturdy man appeared at the front door, carrying a freshly hunted pheasant over his shoulder. His scruffy beard and worn clothes spoke of a life of hard work.
"Hana? Who is this?" he asked, placing his catch on the table near the fireplace, his eyes never leaving Haruto. His gaze was sharp, slightly distrustful.
Hana turned to him with a warm smile.
"Hiroshi, this is Haruto. He's a traveling doctor who had some trouble on the road. I offered him a place to stay in exchange for his medical help."
Hiroshi frowned. His instincts, honed by years of hunting, made him wary. His eyes remained fixed on Haruto, and the air grew tense.
"A doctor, huh?" he muttered. "And what's a man like you doing in the woods without proper gear or clothes?" He stepped closer, locking eyes with Haruto.
Haruto felt the tension rise in the room. He wasn't sure if he could convince this man without resorting to hypnosis. After all, he wanted to save his points for later, until he found a more stable way to earn them. Taking a relaxed posture, he responded calmly:
"You're right to be suspicious. I was attacked by bandits on the road. They took everything I had. Fortunately, they left me alive." He paused, his tone becoming more serious. "Your wife was kind enough to take me in. I don't want to abuse your hospitality, but I'm willing to offer my services in exchange for your generosity."
A tense silence filled the room. Hiroshi raised an eyebrow, then let out a bitter laugh.
"Liar," he said coldly. "You expect me to believe that bandits let you go? Out of pity?"
He leaned in slightly, his gaze growing even sharper.
"Bandits never leave their victims alive—especially not a doctor, who could be useful to them, or worse, someone with enough money to hire ninjas for revenge. They know that if they leave a witness alive, ninjas would be on their trail before they could enjoy their loot. So tell me, doctor, why would they let you go?"
Hiroshi's words hit like thunder in the room. Hana froze, glancing worriedly at Haruto, searching his face for an answer. Haruto knew he had to act fast.
Despite his calm appearance, Haruto's mind raced.
Damn it. This guy is smarter than I expected. If I don't do something, he could ruin everything. Even Hana… Even she might snap out of the hypnosis if this goes on. No choice—I have to isolate him first.
Haruto took a deep breath and gave a reassuring smile.
"You're right, Hiroshi," he said calmly. "It does sound unlikely. But what if I told you I escaped them using a trick? I understand your doubts, and that's why I want to propose something. Come with me outside, just a little away from the house. I'll show you proof of what I'm saying."
Hiroshi crossed his arms, skeptical.
"Why should I follow you? And why not here?"
Hana, still frozen between them, intervened softly, her tone laced with worry.
"Hiroshi… If Haruto is telling the truth, it might help us understand what happened. I think you should at least hear him out. As long as you don't go too far from the village, there's nothing to fear."
Haruto felt a wave of relief. Thank you, hypnosis—it's still holding.
Hiroshi grunted, giving Haruto one last look before giving in.
"Fine. But if this is some kind of trick, you'll regret it."
Haruto nodded confidently, masking his relief.
"I understand your caution. Let's go—it won't take long, and it's not far."
Hiroshi grabbed his hunting knife and slid it into his belt before following Haruto out of the house. Hana, still worried, watched them leave from the door, murmuring a silent prayer for their safety.
Haruto led the way a few meters away, careful not to go too far from the house to avoid suspicion, but far enough that their conversation wouldn't reach Hana.
Alright, I need to be convincing. Very convincing, Haruto thought, meeting Hiroshi's wary gaze.
He stopped, turned slowly, and in a deep, steady voice, murmured:
"Absolute hypnosis."*
----------------------------------------------------------
Your Mind stat (10 points) is higher than the target's (5 points). Hypnosis is possible.
Choose the level of hypnosis:
1 - Minor Hypnosis (50 points)
2 - Medium Hypnosis (200 points)
3 - Major Hypnosis (600 points)
4 - Absolute Hypnosis (1,200 points)
Your current points: 373
----------------------------------------------------------
"Even though Minor Hypnosis isn't bad, it's too weak and lasts less than a week. I'll go for Medium. I'll still have enough points left for at least two more Minor Hypnosis uses," Haruto muttered, selecting the option.
Hiroshi's eyes flickered slightly, becoming hazy as the hypnosis took effect.
"Listen closely, Hiroshi," Haruto began in a calm, controlled voice. "The truth is, you realized your wife and daughter are suffering from a very rare and dangerous illness with no known cure. To avoid panicking your family or being cast out of the village if word got out, you kept this secret to yourself."
Hiroshi listened, his expression blank as Haruto's words sank into his mind.
"Then, you heard rumors about a miracle doctor who could cure any disease. The rumor said this doctor could be summoned by sacrificing a wild golden pheasant and drawing a circle with its blood. You started hunting tirelessly to find one. A week ago, you completed the ritual but nothing happened. You began to despair, thinking it was just a myth."
Haruto paused dramatically, then leaned in slightly.
"What you didn't know was that the doctor—me—would appear after a week."
Hiroshi nodded slowly, absorbing every word, his expression still clouded.
"You have no reason to doubt that I'm this doctor, and you will never question my treatment methods. This is the only way to save your family, and you will follow my instructions to the letter. Finally, reassure Hana that everything is fine. But don't tell her I'm the miracle doctor—you don't want to alarm her. That's why I lied, pretending to be just a traveling doctor who was attacked by bandits."
Haruto hesitated for a moment before adding one final command:
"And for my treatment to work, you must have faith in me and my abilities. Pray for me with all your heart whenever I order you to."
Hiroshi murmured, repeating the words like a prayer:
"You are this doctor… No doubt… Follow your methods… Reassure Hana…"
Suddenly, his eyes cleared, and he stood up straighter.
