Chapter 30: 30 a traitor among us
His hand was still touching her and she was conducting his energy, empowering him without realizing it. Lightning sparked from within him and bolts carved spidery burns into the walls, further ruining Maeve's plants which had already blown off of the shelves.
"Come back to me Saoirse!" He plead with her. "I'm so sorry.
But his words came out "ahhhhsriiiiaaaahhh!"
He struggled so hard against his beast that he normally didn't have to control, was he a dragon? No, he was something else, was he Taz?
"I know you didn't mean to do it. I understand you now, that every single one of your kills has been from self defense, necessity, or an accident. All of them except one." He managed to say despite that he couldn't speak Norwegian anymore in that moment it came out "iiii aaaaahhhh shriiiiaaahhhh" and a jarbled mess of shrill shrieks.
He desperately reached into her box of beads and took out the necklace that she kept. He could feel himself slipping away, but he endured the agony as his blights spread across his body. He opened the locket and revealed the family of the little girl he had rescued most recently. He realized this particular kill stood out from the rest.
She had been forced to do it point blank and been rewarded for it.
He took her hand gently and placed the locket inside her palm and closed her fist around it. "This is why you're hurting." He whispered. Returning to his human form, subduing Taz for the first time since his connection had been severed and somehow, Taz had been there the whole time.
"Welcome back." Taz said in his mind.
Then he calmed the wind and lightning inside of him and her ice melted away too. She was left there holding the locket, tears streaming down her face.
"I am sorry I was insensitive towards you." He said.
She shook her head and said, "I promised him that this wasn't me. That I wasn't a killer and then I killed thousands. I was about to murder the Alpha out of revenge. I was going to drag you into it. Who have I become?"
Sirius dried her tears and looked at her in her eyes and smiled. "You're not dragging me into anything. I want to stop him. I want to stop tyrants from hurting people. That's what I do!
That's who I am! I am a warrior Saoirse, but I'm protecting people. I've killed gangsters, that doesn't mean I'm a murderer. They were harming innocent people and this man right here:" he said opening the locket, "I know his family."
She looked at him with hope in her eyes and then fear. He continued, "If we take them this locket, they will know he died with honor.
"I'm sure he was out searching for a new place to live. That is why he left home. Until now, they haven't had closure, but we can give them closure now."
"They won't want me to do that! I saw them murder him!" She said in shock.
"Why did you take his locket if it wasn't to bring it back to his family one day?" He asked her.
"How did you know that?"
He smiled, "because I figured out what kind of magic I can do. I saw everything you've been through- in this reincarnation that is, it seems you have forgotten as well all that came before."
She nodded drying her tears.
——————-
At Pembrookeshire, the Alpha lounged in the pool, enjoying the warmth of the day. A gentle breeze stirred the air, causing the trees along the fence line at the far corner of the property to sway softly, adding to the peaceful atmosphere around him.
He sipped a martini and sampled snacks from a charcuterie platter. He picked up a pheasant Terrine from the tray and took a bite when a slight shiver blew through the yard.
A few raindrops hit the top of his head and he looked up into the sky to see where they came from. The sky had been clear moments ago, but now a thundercloud was coming towards him in the distance.
He made a deep sigh and climbed lazily out of the water. A servant handed him a towel and retrieved his tray of food and he decided to head indoors.
"Still no sign of the wolf girl or that cop?" The Alpha asked the gang leader as he entered the steam room and found a man relaxing in there.
"I assume she would be coming, my men were put in jail last night and one of them was able to get ahold of me. He said that they are together now."
"What a disgrace, a werewolf with a vampire. We are on opposite sides of this war, and that girl will lead us to ruin having an association with him." The Alpha scoffed.
The gang leader breathed in the water vapor and let it out through his nose. "I bet it was an empty threat. She isn't with that wolf boy anymore and he was the one who wanted to take all the territories. She might want revenge, but there isn't a reason for her to bother us."
"The cop would have a reason." The Alpha said. They're married, so he could convince her."
"Nah." The gang leader answered him, "That boy would be outside of his jurisdiction. Even if he wants to take down our gang, he wouldn't be stupid enough to walk into the pack."
"There's a storm brewing outside." The Alpha said, "will you and your men be staying here tonight?"
"Sure. It's better that we stay in Pembrookeshire for a while, I lost a lot of men yesterday and I don't want the law down my back."
"That's fine by me." The Alpha responded. "Oh and I have no problem granting your request to receive asylum for your men. They can't keep them in prison if they aren't citizens of the human nation. I sent my brother to turn them."
"Good."
The alpha and the gang leader each stood and parted ways.
The Alpha made his way down the hallway to the throne room after dressing himself and sat down on his throne awaiting the arrival of the prisoners from last night that the humans had arrested. All werewolf prisoners were always immediately released to him for judgement. They didn't go to trial in the human courts, nor attend human prison, they all went through his judgement and he had a prison more suited to werewolves that they would go to.
The system was because they were considered a different nation, even though they nearly overlapped lands. each nation judged their own prisoners.
A knock sounded on the door and guards came in with 10 men in a row, all of them best up badly and one of them was Aksel.
The Alpha stood to maintain himself above the prisoners stature and they bowed towards him.
"Pathetic. He snarled at them. "Last night was an embarrassment."
He walked over to them, gnashing his teeth at them as he got closer. "Not only did you fail to bring that girl to submission, you angered her. And you allowed that cop to get away. We are just 4 months away from the new moon eclipse, where the new moon will last a week long. It is the anniversary of Alastor's attack on the wolves, and each year he takes nearly 25 percent of us to his side.
We need to stop making ourselves weaker in his eyes."
"Sir if I may." Aksel said.
"You have made a fool out of me!" The Alpha snapped, "I should kill you to make an example. It's your fault she has set out to challenge me in the first place and I even drugged her for you and yet you couldn't even do the simple task of dominating a female! I needed that cop gone!"
"Why?" Aksel asked, "it's more like my pride is ruined, why do you care if I dominate her or not? Just catch a different vampire!"
The Alpha stood back up, he had gotten in Aksel's face out of anger and only now did he realize that Aksel had managed to stand taller than he had.
The Alpha smiled. He chuckled to himself and the tension in the room dissipated.
"Even now you want to be above me?"
Aksel continued glaring at him. "That stupid drug didn't work." He said. "She drank the whole thing and didn't even fall asleep. You just pulled a trick to turn her against me since you know I'm the brains. I bet you told the cop where to find us at the hotel, he was already there waiting."
A man next to Aksel shifted.
The Alpha looked at him and smiled. "You mean to tell me that I have a traitor who tipped her and the cop off?"
Aksel nodded.
"Very good observation. And I suppose you are willing to try and see who that is?" The Alpha asked.
