Chapter 183: Hippogriff
This lesson on the care of magical creatures was taught jointly by Gryffindor and Slytherin third-years. The young wizards, wearing the robes of two different houses, left Hogwarts Castle and made their way to Hagrid's hut.
The rain that had fallen all morning had stopped. Irina and the others stepped onto the wet grass. The grass, dampened by the rain, felt soft and springy underfoot.
By the time Irina and the others arrived outside Hagrid's hut, Hagrid was already waiting there, dressed in his thick fur coat and showing his large teeth. His excitement was palpable, and he seemed eager to begin.
"Come on, hurry up! I've got something good to show you today. This class is going to be wonderful! Follow me!" Hagrid said enthusiastically, leading the young wizards toward the Forbidden Forest.
However, just when the young wizards thought Hagrid was taking them into the Forbidden Forest, he stopped outside a small meadow. The meadow was empty, with nothing inside.
"Gather around this fence and make sure you can see! Alright, first, open your textbooks!" Hagrid said loudly.
Malfoy from the Slytherin group mocked, saying in his lazy voice, "How do we open it?"
Hagrid was momentarily stunned by this.
Irina, from Gryffindor, understood that it was Hagrid's first day as a teacher and that he wasn't very good at handling emergencies. She stood up thoughtfully and said to the students, "Everyone, you need to 'touch the spine' of the 'Monster Book of Monsters,' and it will calm down."
Irina was the most powerful among the third-year students at Hogwarts. Having faced Voldemort and killed a basilisk, her words were respected by all the students in the same grade, including Slytherin.
With Irina's help, the young wizards began to follow her instructions.
Soon, most of the young wizards had managed to calm their "Monster Book of Monsters" in their hands. Only a few shyer students were still hesitating, too afraid to untie the ropes holding their books shut.
They had all seen the vicious look in the book's eyes when it had tried to bite their hands.
In this regard, Irina acted like an older sister, going one by one to help them calm their books.
Once everyone had successfully opened their textbooks, Hagrid scratched his head and said, "Now that you all have your books, what you need now are magical creatures. Yes... yes, I'll go fetch them. Wait a minute..."
Perhaps because it was Hagrid's first time teaching at Hogwarts, he still seemed very nervous. He stammered and then walked toward the Forbidden Forest, disappearing without looking back.
"Does this giant want us to have a self-study class in this empty field?" Malfoy sneered.
Upon hearing this, Harry immediately shouted, "Shut up, Malfoy!"
"Oh my goodness, this school is ruined," Malfoy said loudly, loyal to Harry, "That idiot is teaching. My dad's going to have a heart attack if he finds out about this…"
Seeing Malfoy insult her friend in this way, Irina coldly said, "Then let him have a heart attack and drop dead! Malfoy, I think your skin is itching!"
Seeing Irina speak, someone who had beaten him before, Malfoy instinctively shrank back.
But perhaps because he hadn't been beaten in over a year, Malfoy scowled and said, "Did I say something wrong? An idiot who can't teach, and an idiot who was terrified of the Dementors…"
Malfoy's group mocking effect was as good as always. Irina and the others raised their wands at the same time, ready to teach Malfoy a lesson.
But at that moment, Lavender Brown from Gryffindor pointed to the other side of the field and exclaimed.
They saw Hagrid leading a dozen strange-looking magical creatures into the meadow. These magical creatures had the bodies, hind legs, and tails of horses, but their front legs, wings, and heads were those of eagles, with large orange eyes.
These magical creatures were Hippogriffs. Each Hippogriff had a thick leather collar around its neck and was tethered by a long chain. These long chains were shaped like Hagrid.
In fact, these Hippogriffs didn't originally wear leather collars. They were free to fly happily in the Forbidden Forest. However, for the safety of the students, Hagrid had put collars on them for the class.
Even in Hagrid's eyes, these Hippogriffs were just cute babies.
Well, it wasn't just Hagrid. To Irina's eyes, these Hippogriffs were fierce and adorable creatures.
After all, Irina had even raised a bent-winged demon with a danger level of XXXXX.
Irina looked at the Hippogriffs with shining eyes. Their shimmering coats gradually changed from feathers to fur.
Each Hippogriff was a different color, including stormy gray, bronze, pale pink, bright reddish-brown, and ink-black.
"Alright," Hagrid rubbed his hands together and looked at everyone with a smile, "If you want to approach them…"
The young wizards from Slytherin and most of the Gryffindor students took a step back. Only Irina, Harry, Ron, and Hermione cautiously approached the fence.
"Remember, the first thing you need to know about Hippogriffs is that they are very proud and can lose their temper easily. Don't humiliate them, or they could kill you," Hagrid said seriously.
"You have to wait for the Hippogriff to make the first move. This is polite, understand?" he continued, "Walk toward it and bow, and if it bows back, you can touch it. If it doesn't bow, walk away. Otherwise, those claws will hurt."
"Alright, who wants to go first?" Hagrid clapped and looked at the young wizards.
Upon hearing this, nearly all the young wizards instinctively took a step back, including Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
Irina was the only one with shining eyes. She eagerly volunteered, "I'll do it! Hagrid, let me do it!"
