Chapter 53
Episode 53: The Clowns Dance in Vain (Part 3)
“Here’s your food. Eat it and then get out!!”
Through the window in the door, a meal protected by a container was handed in.
Demitul silently accepted it.
“Damn it… why do I have to eat this disgusting slop…”
Demitul cursed at the meal handed to him. The food provided by House Zarfing was by no means poor. It was of a quality that would easily meet the standards of an average commoner’s household.
However, compared to the meals Demitul had been accustomed to, it was like night and day, and that humiliation burned within him.
It had been a week since Demitul was isolated. The pain from having his nose smashed and being pinned against the wall by Giorg had mostly subsided.
Demitul and Giorg hadn’t seen each other since. As a result, some of Demitul’s fear of Giorg had faded, and he occasionally cursed at Giorg in his mind.
“Damn it!! If that maid Aisha hadn’t run away, none of this would’ve happened!”
Of course, this was the punishment for trying to assault Aisha, but Demitul didn’t think for a second that he was in the wrong.
“Damn it!! When I become king, I’ll destroy this Galveit Kingdom!!”
Demitul shamelessly declared that he would destroy Galveit next. Despite being told by Giorg that Galveit had already abandoned him, this statement suggested that Demitul might be starting to lose his grip on reality.
Tap tap…
“Huh?”
Footsteps could be heard approaching. For the past week, no one had come near this room except to deliver meals or collect dishes.
“There’s more than one person…? So, they’ve finally decided to let me out. Honestly, it’s infuriating, but if I change my ways from now on, maybe they’ll forgive… me… Eek!!”
Demitul, who had been looking at the door with an arrogant expression, suddenly let out a scream of terror.
The door opened, and there stood Giorg. Behind him were Roy and Cain.
“Please forgive me!! Please forgive me!! Please forgive me!!”
Demitul knelt, clasped his hands together, and bowed to Giorg. Seeing Giorg had instantly brought back his fear.
“Silence.”
“Eek…”
With a single word from Giorg, Demitul’s pleas were silenced. In this situation, Demitul couldn’t even consider disobeying Giorg’s command. That’s how deeply his fear of Giorg was ingrained.
“I’ll just convey the message.”
“……”
“We’ve found the whereabouts of your younger brother, Lukult, and your sister, Sosua.”
“Huh?”
Demitul’s face went blank at the information brought by Giorg. Giorg’s expression didn’t change at all, which terrified Demitul even more. He was overwhelmed by the fear that he might be crushed like an ant at any moment.
“Lukult is in the Flastarl Empire, and Sosua is at Rekuryaku Castle in the former Gildolq Kingdom.”
“They’re… dead, aren’t they…?”
“Of course not. Both are active as pawns of King Jilvol, just like you.”
Giorg coldly dismissed Demitul’s words. Demitul’s expression turned blank again.
“Lukult is using the Flastarl Empire to destroy Zabeil, and Sosua is gathering remnants to become a banner of resistance against King Jilvol.”
“Th-those two…?”
“Of course, they’ll fail.”
“Huh?”
“Isn’t that obvious?”
“Wh-why?”
“What, you really don’t get it? The fact that those two reached the Flastarl Empire and Rekuryaku Castle is all part of King Jilvol’s plan. Of course, he’s already prepared countermeasures. Just like he assigned Azein to you, he’s surely assigned subordinates to Lukult and Sosua as well.”
“Ah…”
Demitul’s face turned pale at Giorg’s words.
“Here’s how I think King Jilvol’s plan will unfold. First, Lukult and Sosua will simultaneously issue rallying cries to the former vassals of the Gildolq Kingdom, calling them to gather under their banners. The reason is simple. The former vassals will weigh which side will benefit them more. Will it be Lukult, backed by the Empire, or Sosua, who remains within the country to resist?”
Giorg chuckled as he spoke.
“And then, Lukult and Sosua will start to quarrel.”
“Huh?”
“From King Jilvol’s perspective, it’s more convenient if they quarrel rather than unite. The likely method is for King Jilvol’s subordinates, who are close to both, to claim that the prince and princess are impostors.”
“Ah, you devil…”
“Now, wouldn’t you want to prevent their conflict?”
“Huh?”
Demitul’s expression went blank again at Giorg’s words.
“From our perspective, it would be convenient if the two of them united when negotiating with the Zabeil Kingdom. If you can make that happen, I promise to plead for your life with King Jilvol.”
Demitul nodded vigorously at Giorg’s words. Seeing this, Giorg smiled faintly.
“Got it… I’ll do it!!”
Demitul declared with determination.
“Good. Roy, give Demitul some writing tools.”
“Yes.”
Following Giorg’s order, Roy handed the writing tools to Demitul.
“Once you’re done writing, ring this bell, and my subordinates will come to collect it. Then, we’ll move you to a slightly better room. It seems you’ve reflected on your actions.”
With that, Giorg turned on his heel and left the room, followed by Roy and Cain.
Clang!!
As the door closed, Demitul began writing the letter with single-minded focus.
“It seems he’s started writing.”
At Cain’s report, Giorg’s lips curled into a smile.
“Of course. This is Demitul’s last chance. He won’t waste it.”
“Well, in the end, it’ll still be pointless, right? You’re quite cruel, Lord Giorg.”
Roy said with a sigh, and Giorg looked offended.
“What are you talking about? I haven’t lied at all.”
“Well, you haven’t lied, but you haven’t exactly told the whole truth either, have you?”
“If Demitul misunderstands, that’s his problem. It’s none of our concern.”
“True, but it’s still pitiful to see him dancing as a clown even after realizing he’s one.”
At Roy’s words, Giorg smirked.
