Chapter 52
Episode 52: The Clowns Dance in Vain (Part 2)
“Your Highness, we should be safe for now.”
A knight respectfully addressed a young girl, who nodded with a stiff expression. The girl, referred to as “Your Highness,” was none other than Sosua_Muzeria_Gildolq, the princess of the Gildolq Kingdom. At 13 years old, she was a beautiful girl with fair, porcelain-like features.
“Thank you. Everyone, take a rest for now.”
“Yes, Your Highness!”
The knight immediately responded to Sosua’s words and left the room.
(We’ve managed to escape this far… but what should I do now?)
Sosua muttered to herself in her heart.
She had been informed during her escape that both her parents and her two older brothers had already been executed. The maids who once served her were also no longer here—most had been killed in the chaos when she was captured by Jilvol.
Remembering the moment she was captured, Sosua still trembled uncontrollably. The overwhelming hatred in the eyes of the soldiers who captured her was utterly terrifying.
And then there were the words Jilvol had spat at her father, King Orutas II: “I forgot I was even human because of you bastards!!” Those words were especially horrifying.
For Sosua, who had been cherished and protected all her life, such intense hatred was something she had never experienced before.
(Those eyes of Jilvol and his men… It’s clear they have no intention of showing us any mercy…)
Sosua felt something gnawing at her. This unease, once it sprouted, didn’t wither—instead, it grew rapidly, and Sosua could feel it.
“That’s right… There’s no way Jilvol would let me go. Yes, yes! That’s it! It has to be!”
Sosua spoke in a firm tone, as if she had to voice it out loud or risk being crushed by her anxiety.
“Then… me being here is part of Jilvol’s… plan?”
The thought sent shivers down her spine. Until now, she had been too focused on escaping to think about it, but the moment she caught her breath, the abnormality of her situation became glaringly obvious.
(The people who helped me might also be Jilvol’s subordinates.)
Sosua closed her mouth and glanced around. Once that thought took root, everyone around her suddenly seemed suspicious.
(If I’m alive here because of Jilvol’s plan… then what’s my value to him?)
Sosua delved deeper into her thoughts.
(My value lies in my status as a princess. That’s all, right? And the Gildolq family is already destroyed…)
Sosua wasn’t overestimating herself. She had long understood that she would eventually be married off for political reasons, and she had always carried the awareness that she was a tool for the prosperity of the Gildolq Kingdom.
(This is still within the Gildolq Kingdom… I’m the former princess… What Jilvol wants is control over the people of the Central Nobles’ former territories. The quickest way for Jilvol to gain the people’s support is to create a common enemy… and eliminate that enemy…)
At this point, Sosua arrived at a chilling realization.
“Ah… no, that can’t be…”
Sosua muttered softly, her body beginning to tremble uncontrollably.
“The common enemy… is me.”
Sosua’s complexion turned from pale to ashen. Her family had been killed, her loved ones slaughtered, and her life thrown into chaos. But beyond that, she now saw the reality that she was being used by Jilvol.
“If I become the enemy… Jilvol will undoubtedly kill me.”
Sosua’s trembling didn’t stop. She could endure being treated as an enemy by Zabeiru’s people. But the thought of becoming the enemy of the masses, being cursed and executed to solidify Jilvol’s rule, was something she couldn’t accept.
“And even if I realize this… there’s nothing I can do about it…”
Despair enveloped Sosua’s heart.
She had almost accurately recognized her position and predicted her future, but she also understood that there was nothing she could do to avoid that future. Even as a former member of the royal family, she had no one left to serve her. Even if she escaped, she had no way to survive, and escaping in the first place was impossible.
(I have to do something… I don’t want to die.)
Sosua whispered this in her heart.
And this realization would ultimately change her fate.
