chapter 19
19 – The Red Room
Below the beautiful cathedral in the capital that many believers on the continent want to visit at least once before they die.
As the name suggests, the pure white room is called the red room. Stained red with blood.
Benedict, who had interrogated countless heretics and innocents, threw the bone grinder he was holding onto the floor with a tired face.
He has experienced numerous interrogations here, but he has never experienced such a poisonous disease. Even the proud knights and insane fanatics could not stand the torture and collapsed, or sincerely begged to be killed.
But the young man in front of me was different. He didn’t sleep for 2 days and even used drugs to make him unable to adjust to the pain, but this guy never broke down.
With empty potion bottles rolled on the floor and the entire white room stained red, what a terrible torture it was. I didn’t have to say anything.
Even the priests who were watching the interrogation looked tired.
It is mentally tiring just to watch the torture, but the sight of counting sheep to the end without losing consciousness despite the severe torture is beyond unpleasant, it is grotesque. It was itself.
A priest with a tired expression cautiously approached Benedict.
“I didn’t sleep for two days before interrogation. It is really dangerous at this rate.”
At that, Benedict wiped the blood from his hands and wiped his face.
“Huh, I didn’t expect this to be poisonous. Even I was exhausted from not sleeping and torturing myself without rest. How the hell am I going to hold on?”
Now I really doubted whether this guy was a heretic. It was impossible for an academy first year student to have this level of mental strength.
Did you hear what Benedict said? Maybe he just wanted to count sheep. A very small voice, wet with his blood, reached Benedict’s ears.
“Nine thousand eight hundred and one sheep….”
Not only Benedict, but even the priests gave goosebumps at that emotionless voice.
Even if he had his lips gouged out and a needle stuck in his neck to make him unable to speak, somehow he still counted sheep.
Benedict was worried that the deal with the princess would go wrong as time passed. Contrary to what he confidently promised. Ross neither broke his spirit nor made a false confession.
“Whoa, hey Ross. Why don’t we stop counting sheep and have a conversation now? Then I will stop the interrogation.”
As Benedict spoke impatiently, Ross raised his face very slowly.
Ross, unable to close his eyes because his eyelids had been cut to keep him from sleeping, said, looking at Benedict with bloodstained eyes.
“Nine thousand eight hundred two sheep….”
“What a crazy bastard!”
Benedict angrily checked for any unused instruments of torture, but he could not find anything satisfactory.
What should I do to make Ross collapse? When Benedict was contemplating, stamping his feet. Someone knocked on the door of the red room.
“What!”
Annoyed at being interrupted in his interrogation, Benedict shouted. The priest answered from outside the door.
“Princess Bella will be arriving soon.”
At the priest’s words, Benedict regained his sanity. Accepting that he lost to Ross, Benedict sighed and said to the priest:
“The potion you received from the saintess.”
At that, one of the priests handed out a sealed box to Benedict.
After unsealing the box and taking out a black potion bottle, Benedict immediately sprinkled the potion on Ross.
Watching the lips, eyelids, fingers, and ears cut out just like the potion the saintess made herself were regenerating in an instant. Benedict felt sorry for him.
If I couldn’t stand the torture and my mind collapsed, I was going to treat it with a potion and turn it into an unscathed idiot and drive it to the black magician’s work. This guy endured all the pain.
Angrily throwing the empty potion bottle on the floor, Benedict asked the priest.
“How much is it if you count the potion you just used?”
“If you add the potion just now, there are 11 bottles in total. Ieast… Eight years would have been less.”
At the priest’s words, Benedict shook his head.
“Whoa, it’s so hard to try the Pope. Everyone suffered Everyone changes clothes when the princess is coming.”
With a warm smile as always, Benedict said.
Wipe off the blood, change into clean clothes, and wait in the red room. Princess Bella appeared with her knights.
“Princess Bella.”
Benedict and the priest bowed deeply and bowed.
“Nice to meet you, Benedict. But I heard he couldn’t keep his promise?”
Seeing Bella’s cool gaze, Benedict moistened her dry lips with his tongue.
“That…. Is this guy really heretic? I’ve never seen one like this among the guys I’ve interrogated.”
Bella put on an interesting expression at Benedict’s excuse.
“Even if it’s trash, is bloodline bloodline? I am surprised.”
Bella approached Ross and bent her back to observe Ross.
“But what are you muttering?”
“He is counting sheep.”
“She’s counting sheep… ?”
Benedict scratched his forehead at Bella’s stare, as if asking her to explain with her puzzled face.
“They said they would count 10,000 sheep themselves if they endured the torture.”
At that, Bella turned her body to look at Ross and said.
“So you don’t know yet?”
“What… ?”
“After counting 10,000 sheep, will I become an idiot or will I find my true self?”
Benedict felt as if a cold sweat was running down his back at the smooth voice.
“That, right? It was torture that even a knight of the imperial family could not endure.”
“Then, shall we have a cup of coffee until we count ten thousand sheep?”
“It is an honor.”
Nodding her head at the smiling Bella, Benedict looked briefly at Ross, who was still counting her sheep, then followed Bella out of the red room.
***
“Ten thousand sheep….”
I came to my senses with a murmur. I vaguely remembered that the interrogator had tortured me in a dreamy state.
Fortunately, I was concentrating on counting sheep, so I felt no pain and no signs of torture, so I wasn’t any different than usual except for a bad feeling like I was just having a nightmare.
Indomitable courage I did not understand the meaning of the word fortress of reason, but after experiencing it, I realized what it was. The inquisitor’s harsh torture did not harm my spirit.
When he admires his great ability and smiles with satisfaction that he has chosen the reward for Gias well. A shriek close to astonishment was heard from somewhere.
When I looked up, a priest looked at me with fearful eyes and asked in a trembling voice.
“That, that…. Have you counted all the sheep?”
“… Yes?”
“Ten thousand sheep, ten thousand….”
Let’s nod to the strange priest’s attitude. The priest left the room with a frightened expression.
When I was puzzled by the unknown priest’s attitude and thought that about 5,000 sheep would be suitable for the next torture. Several footsteps were heard, and the princess appeared with the knights and the priest.
“Are you awake?”
Looking at me and seeing Bella talking with a sad expression, I unconsciously recalled Bella’s setting.
The future emperor. Roel’s greatest helper. He was a heroine who bought time in all kinds of ways until Roel’s party of warriors headed to the Demon King’s Castle, keeping in check the trash nobles who cooperated with the church to obtain the power of eternity because they did not want to let go of power.
Bella’s setting was that even though she was an emperor, she would do all sorts of dirty things for the sake of Roel and the world. Should I say the female version of the long-legged man?
I never expected that I would get caught up in that dirty thing…. People didn’t know how to do it.
“Are you unhappy that you were brought to the interrogation room?”
At Bella’s question, I laughed involuntarily. It was natural. Had it not been for his indomitable courage, he would surely have lost his mind and become an idiot.
“Yes. Because I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Bella asked, raising one corner of her mouth at my calm voice.
“Really? Then can you tell me?”
I suddenly felt uneasy at Bella’s mischievous voice.
“What kind of magic did you use in the town of Destin and in the restaurant?”
Her tongue swelled and it felt like her mouth was full. She didn’t expect at all that she would have suspected it, so she couldn’t cope and showed her embarrassment.
“Can’t you talk? Because that’s black magic, right?”
“… No.”
“Really? Can you prove it?”
I swallowed dryly at Bella’s sharp question.
If you take out Patulga’s spellbook from the space storage, it may be possible to prove it here, but the value of Patulga’s spellbook. There was no way Bella, who had the wisdom of a snake, would not know.
For my plan, I needed Patulga’s Spellbook. I looked at Bella and said, rolling her head quickly.
“I can prove it in front of my brother and a notary public.”
If it was in front of my brother and a notary public, no matter how princess I was, I wouldn’t be able to take mine by force.
As if laughing at her answer, Bella shook her head.
“Do you think you can get out of here?”
This is an obvious provocation. Recalling Bella’s setting, I set the taunt to her station.
“Then you can count 20,000 sheep.”
Let’s stare straight into the golden eyes and speak casually. Bella’s eyes flickered for a moment.
Bella has an innate ability to understand people’s true feelings. That’s why she absolutely believes in and loves Roel, who always treats everyone sincerely.
She caught my heart, Bella glared at me and gestured to the knight behind her.
Receiving the roll of paper her knight gave her, Bella approached me with a strange smile and shook her paper.
“I met Ellie before I came here. Everything here is a petition written by Ellie herself.”
At those words, my eyes went to the paper without my knowledge. On the paper, written with sincerity and tightly pressed letters, it was written that the Ross he knew would never be such a person.
“He was very worried about you and even argued with me. Be cheeky.”
Bella’s whisper made her body flinch involuntarily.
Bella whispered sweetly in her ear, smiling with satisfaction that she had found her weakness.
“If you do what I want, I can let you play and eat with the Ellie you love for the rest of your life. If you want, I’ll even guarantee you a noble status. If in doubt, you can swear before God.”
It was a sweet temptation. Right now, with Bella’s strength, Ellie and I could live affluent lives.
But I know Bella well. It was a trap. If she steps into the trap designed by Bella even once, she will never be able to escape.
“No. I don’t want to live a life of lies.”
Reject Bella’s offer. Bella sighed, threw her petition on the floor, and spoke in a menacing low voice.
“I will spread rumors that you collaborated with the warlock and kill you. Ellie, whom you love, will remember you that way. She is said to be ‘the concubine of the warlock who deceived herself’. Roel will be sad too, but I will fight the demon king to avenge you.”
From Bella’s point of view, I didn’t know if it would be better. She sacrificed me, who has no value, and there is nothing better than awakening Roel.
However, the reason Bella tells me this is because she actually doesn’t. I don’t know why, but if she really did, she would have pulled out her knife and stabbed her in the throat instead of explaining.
“Even if you hide the truth, it will come out someday.”
At my words, Bella sighed, stopping her glaring gaze at her, and took her gold-encrusted staff from her bosom and swung it.
I wonder if they’re attacking? Instinctively she closed her eyes, then opened them softly at the freedom she felt in her limbs from her captivity.
“If you had accepted it, I would have killed you at any risk now. There are people who never get used, but no one gets used just once.”
Bella’s words made me feel a little puzzled. Bella acting as if her interrogation was over was far from what I expected.
Because of her personality that doesn’t give up easily, I thought there would be one or two more interrogations, but Bella gave up so easily? What could Roel have done?
As if to solve my doubts, someone opened the door to the red room and appeared.
When I saw that person, I unknowingly let out an ah sound.
There was another person who could stop Bella from running amok.
It’s just that she was someone I never expected to appear.
The man who entered the red room while proudly stroking his well-managed beard.
The principal of Transcendence Academy. The father of the students with the title of ‘Sage’.
It was Nelson.
“Nice to meet you, Ross.”
Nelson waved at me and smiled warmly.
