chapter 20
20 – Principal Nelson
When I was taken aback by Nelson’s sudden appearance, Bella opened her mouth with a disapproving expression.
“The principal defended you. They say it’s all just evidence of doubt…. However, the secret of the magic you used is still unsolved. As you said, you can’t get out of here without the notary of the ‘sage’ Principal Nelson.”
As expected, Bella did not give up easily. As she let out a sigh, Nelson turned her away from me and spoke to Bella.
“I’m sorry, but the notarization will be done by just the two of us.”
“That is impossible.”
Bella immediately responded to Nelson’s words.
“Are you doubting the sage’s notarization?”
Everyone in the red room felt a strong sense of pressure from the mana contained in his voice. The space around him distorted like a haze from the intimidating feeling emanating from Nelson’s body.
As the knights behind Bella instinctively put their hands on their swords, her mood grew even heavier.
Bella lifted her hand to restrain her, and then her knights let go of her sword.
“Can you doubt it? Please. Nelson ‘The Wise’.”
Leaving behind the words to fulfill the duty of a sage, not a headmaster, Bella led her people out of her room.
The feeling of intimidation from a while ago disappeared before I knew it, and Nelson, wearing the warm smile of his grandfather, took out a cane from his bosom and swung it.
All the soggy blood on the clothes disappeared, leaving no traces, and the clothes looked as clean as new. With another swing of his staff, the hair that covered his forehead fell back.
“Fortunately, there are no major problems with your body. In addition, my magic has made it much cleaner, and its tall appearance shines.”
I smiled at Nelson’s joke. The necktie was so tight that it felt tight around his neck, and when he loosened it slightly, Nelson continued with a voice filled with apologetics.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t expect this to happen while I was away for a while…. After being contacted by Professor Leora and crossing the eastern boundary, it must be very late…. Are you okay?”
“It’s okay. But I didn’t expect you to come here.”
“Of course, our student was taken to the interrogation room, but we can’t stay still. I can even tear down the cathedral if need be.”
Seeing Nelson wink in one eye, I thought, of course, this person could do that.
Of course, the archmage has strong power to match the title. In this world, like Roel, the most trustworthy person and the most ambiguous person was Principal Nelson.
He treats all the students at school like his son, and is the teacher of Ellie, who will become the future archmage. He was a person who lost his life after saving Roel and Ellie from falling into the trap of the church.
Trusting Nelson, I took out Patulga’s magic book from the storage room.
“This is a magic book I found by chance near the town of Destin. The magic I used is the basic magic from the first part.”
At my words, Nelson asked with an interesting look on his face.
“Oh, can I see the magic?
After checking his body condition at Nelson’s words, he nodded.
I made an entrance to the dimension in front of me, an exit in front of Nelson, and threw Patulga’s spellbook into the entrance.
Nelson, who received Patulga’s magic book from the dimensional exit, put his book on his side and clapped his hands in amazement like a child.
“That’s great. That’s great!”
Seeing Nelson delighted as if he had seen his grandson’s tricks. Feeling embarrassed, I scratched the back of his head. Nelson, who started reading Patulga’s spell book that was stuck in his side, checked only the basic magic I mentioned and returned the spell book to me.
“Aren’t you going to check the back?”
As I asked in puzzlement, Nelson shook his head slightly.
“Is it really necessary? All you have to do is prove that your magic isn’t black magic, right?”
“But…. You don’t know what a great magic book this is.”
The most important thing to a wizard is reason, but on the contrary, the driving force of a wizard is curiosity. Therefore, reason that can suppress and control curiosity may be the most important thing for a wizard.
At my words, Nelson smiled and put his hand on my shoulder.
“Yes, so it can be of great help to you.”
Nelson’s innocent smile strangely made me cry somewhere in my heart, and an emotion soared.
Nelson removed his hand from his shoulder and swung his staff. A piece of petition written by Ellie, which had been rolling on the floor, rose into the air, and the letters on the paper changed as Nelson said.
“A certified archmage of the Empire who has the title of ‘Sage’ to prove that Ross did not use black magic. Notarized by Abraham Norbert Sergio Nelson.”
With those words, towards the paper, a bright light from the wand passed through the paper like a seal.
“The notarization is over. Do you want to go back to the academy with me now?”
He nodded at Nelson’s words. I don’t remember, but I had no desire to stay in this red room any longer.
Follow Nelson out of the room and up the stairs. As if they were waiting, Bella and the interrogator stood in their way.
“Is notarization over?”
“Here he is.”
Receiving the paper Nelson handed her, Bella bit her lip and glared at me.
After a while, Bella sighs and gestures. The knights who were blocking the road opened the way.
Nelson strode confidently among the knights, stopped his steps toward the inquisitor, who was laying his head down as if to hide behind the knight, and spoke in a low voice.
“I don’t want my student to be taken to an interrogation room without my permission again.”
I wonder if the interrogator felt repulsive at those words. He slipped out from behind the hiding knight and glared at Nelson.
“Interrogation is the exclusive right of the Church! No matter how wise you are, you cannot command the church!”
Nelson’s lips twitched at the interrogator’s words.
“Hey, Benedict…. Since when did you start responding to me?”
Nelson’s surroundings changed sharply as if a person had changed in an instant. Let the magic sway. Benedict grabbed him by the neck and made a strange croak.
“The reason I won’t kill you right now is because the poor saintess asked for it. It’s not just about making your life safe.”
Benedict got down on his knees and threw his hands in the air with his face turning red. Bella stepped forward.
“Forgive me. Principal. Benedict was simply following my orders.”
At those words, the mana radiating from Nelson disappeared in an instant, and Benedict hurriedly took a deep breath into his lungs.
“Anything that happened at the academy must be resolved at the academy. Never forget that principle again. Princess.”
Let Nelson speak in a cold voice. Bella bowed her head like a criminal.
As I followed Nelson as he walked out of the cathedral with a confident step, I felt a sense of relief at Bella’s distorted face.
***
Following Nelson, they arrived at the academy’s principal’s office.
“Is this your first time in the principal’s office?”
“Yes, it is very strange.”
Brooms floating in the air and small hourglasses filled instead of sand inside a huge hourglass. From the lightning that keeps hitting a small tree growing in a place like a fish tank to the snow globe whose contents keep moving as if it were a small world.
I was even dizzy at the little winged fairies talking among themselves while looking at me through the bookshelves in the principal’s office.
Sit on the chair opposite Nelson’s desk. Nelson cracked a joke to ease the tension.
“When I was a student, I was afraid to go to the principal’s office. Most of them were going to get scolded.”
“Did the principal get scolded too?”
Since it was a story I didn’t set up, I wondered and asked. Nelson smiled and nodded his head.
“So, there were times when I even went to the brink of being expelled from a troublemaker.”
As if recalling that time, Nelson asked with a mischievous smile.
“Do you like chocolate by any chance?”
“Of course.”
I just needed something sweet. Nelson got up and brought a tray full of chocolates and a glass of cold milk from somewhere.
“Ever since I was a child, I loved dipping my chocolate cookies in milk.”
I picked up a chocolate cookie while laughing at Nelson’s whisper as if it was a secret.
Let’s eat cold milk and chocolate cookies. Asked Nelson, who was eating chocolate across the street.
“Do you like old stories?”
Is there anything you can tell me? Nelson left the chocolate and asked with a warm smile.
Shrug your shoulders and answer, “The story is good.” The room darkened as Nelson drew his wand from his bosom and swung it around.
Let’s swing the staff one more time. Smoke-like things appeared above the desk, and soon took on a human-like form.
Let’s look at it while being amazed at how it looks like a hologram. Nelson started talking.
“When I was very young. I had a brother.”
According to Nelson’s words, a person who looked like Nelson when he was a child and a person who looked like his older brother appeared on the desk.
“Unlike me, my older brother has been called a genius ever since he was young. Saying that he would become a good wizard was a cliché to him.”
According to those words, Nelson’s older brother wielded his staff and performed wonderful magic.
“I was always envious of a brother like that. I’ve never received a compliment like that before.”
Unlike his older brother, he remembered that Nelson, who failed in magic and became a firecracker, became a laughing stock around him.
“I was always compared to my older brother. The serious and considerate hyung didn’t rely on talent and even tried hard, but I was just a troublemaker who made things difficult for those around me.”
Unlike there was no one around Nelson, I could see Roel and myself overlapping for a moment as I saw countless people scattering flowers around my brother.
“Then, one day, my older brother, who was trying to stop the invasion of demons, died in vain from a blind arrow shot by a dying goblin.”
Nelson’s brother, who was unguarded by the goblin’s arrow, grabbed his heart and collapsed onto his desk.
“My older brother, who was like a wall I couldn’t climb, died, and as time passed, the troublemakers who came to their senses finally surpassed the older brother.”
I remembered the image of Nelson holding his dead brother’s staff and using magic to battle all kinds of monsters.
“At the time, it was so high that I couldn’t even see it, but now it’s no big deal to me.”
The image of his older brother wielding a staff and wielding magic faded away, and Nelson’s image of him wielding magic while spewing out a huge amount of mana came to mind.
“No one judged me to be a good wizard, but I ended up becoming a great wizard.”
Unlike before, when no one was around, there were countless people by Nelson’s side who became the great wizard.
“Despite the objections of the academy faculty. Do you know why I gave you special admission?”
I was puzzled by Nelson’s question and scratched his head. I gave Ross the setting of special admission, but I hadn’t even conceived of the content.
“It’s because I saw myself in you.”
Looking at that incomprehensible statement with a stupid face, Nelson picked up a chocolate and smiled.
“Like me, you are hidden by the wall of older brother, but you can be a good hero.”
“But I don’t have any natural abilities. Even though I have Patulga’s spellbook because I lack magic, I can only use basic magic.”
Let’s blame ourselves. Nelson smiled warmly.
“But unlike my troubled childhood, have you already been a hero?”
Let’s put on a puzzled look at Nelson’s words. After eating the chocolate, Nelson licked his lips and swung his staff.
The vision of Nelson, who had been praised by countless people on the desk, disappeared, and the face of the Destin villager I saw once came to mind.
– You don’t know what our town would be like if it wasn’t for Ross!
The illusion changed, and a familiar face came to mind. He was an innkeeper who was good at cooking.
-If I were the principal, I would have given dozens of certificates to those students.
Speaking slyly, the innkeeper added in a serious voice.
-They are already our heroes.
After that, his face turned red at the praise of the townspeople. I bit my lip for no reason as I felt something tickling somewhere in her chest.
“I stopped by Destin Village to defend you. Everyone praised you all.”
The image of a little girl holding her mother’s hand in the welcome reminded me of the acorns I received as a gift that I had put in the storage room.
“Do you know the meaning of Transcendence Academy?”
I knew that. Because I was the one who set the academy’s name in the first place.
“Transcendence. In other words, don’t you want to go beyond the limit?”
“You know. Yes, transcendence. With the death of my older brother, I transcended my limits and became a great wizard.”
As Nelson swung his staff, the illusion disappeared and the darkened room became light again.
“To you, who couldn’t grow up being blocked by the limitations of being an older brother since childhood. I accepted you because I thought this academy would be of great help.”
Nelson’s look at me with a warm smile suddenly turned hazy. A tear fell from the back of his hand that he had placed on his thigh in an unknown emotion.
I wonder if what I’m feeling right now is Ross’ feelings. Is it purely my feelings?
I’m ashamed to wipe the tears with my sleeve. Nelson, who gave me a moment to gather his emotions, opened his mouth.
“It is very surprising that a freshman endured the interrogation of an interrogator. I have been in a position to oppose such a thing happening to the empire, but the relationship between the imperial family and the church is so close that it can’t be resolved….”
Nelson sighed and clapped his hands.
“Praise the spirit that endured the interrogation. I will give you a gift that will help you.”
Nelson got up from his seat and headed towards the display of snow gloves.
Laughter broke out at Nelson’s mischievous act of gently wiping the dust with the sleeve of his cloak.
“This is what I used when I was a trouble maker. It’s something I don’t need anymore.”
Let’s accept Nelson’s snow globe. Said Nelson.
“To transcend yourself, talking to yourself is the best way.”
I felt uneasy for some reason as Nelson smiled strangely. He tried to say something to Nelson, who quietly raised his wand, but Nelson already had a mischievous grin unbefitting his age.
“Have a good time.”
Light emanated from the end of the cane, and I lost consciousness with the feeling that my whole body was being sucked into something.
