Chapter 4: The Path to the North
The dawns in Aetheria were always quiet, as if nature took a brief pause between the whispers of the night winds and the bustling energy of the day. Kai stood on a hill outside the village, gazing northward. The wind tousled his hair, and the scar on his arm shimmered faintly under the morning sun. His thoughts were far away, lost in the words of the old master Daisuke.
---
"The North holds truth, but also death," the old man had warned before they departed.
---
Kai turned as he heard footsteps behind him and saw Reika approaching, her silhouette framed by the golden rays of morning light. She wore her long cloak, her face set in its usual serious expression.
Reika: "Still thinking about Daisuke's words, aren't you?"
Kai smiled, but it was a smile tinged with doubt.
Kai: "I'd say no, but that'd be a lie to both you and myself. Do you really believe we'll find answers in that frozen wasteland?"
Reika: (firmly) "We have no choice. One of the Ethereal Spheres is there, and with Zorak on our trail, we need to reach it before he does."
---
The group set out northward, traversing rocky terrain and narrow passes. The wind grew colder as they neared the mountains. With them was a young local guide, Luka, whom they had hired at the last moment. Though bold, Luka often cracked jokes that grated on Reika's nerves.
Luka: "So, we're heading straight into winter? Perfect. Hope you all packed warm clothes, because I didn't."
Reika: (sternly) "If you think your jokes will keep you warm, you're gravely mistaken."
Kai: (chuckling) "Let it go, Reika. Maybe Luka can keep the cold at bay with his humor."
Reika sighed, rolling her eyes. But it was clear that she, too, felt uneasy.
---
Encountering the Unknown
As they entered a narrow canyon, Kai felt a strange vibration emanating from his scar. He stopped abruptly.
Kai: "Wait. I feel something."
Luka: (jokingly) "Don't tell me it's a monster following us."
Reika unsheathed her sword, her movements fluid and precise.
Reika: "If someone is following us, they won't for long."
Out of the canyon's shadows emerged three armored warriors. Their eyes were hollow, as if they weren't alive.
Unknown Leader: "Who dares tread this path without permission?"
Kai: "We're just passing through. We mean no trouble."
Unknown Leader: (coldly) "You may pass—after you defeat us."
Reika didn't wait. She lunged forward, her sword gleaming under the sunlight. Kai joined her, and even Luka, though inexperienced, drew his short knife.
---
The Battle in the Canyon
The fight was swift and fierce. Reika moved like the wind, her strikes precise and deadly. Kai used his power, but the scar on his arm began to pulsate uncontrollably. One of the warriors hurled a spear at Luka, but Kai managed to create a barrier of pure energy at the last moment.
Luka: (astonished) "How did you do that?!"
Kai: (confused) "I don't know..."
His power grew stronger with each attack, but it came at a cost. After every burst of energy, Kai felt increasingly drained.
---
When they defeated the warriors, their bodies crumbled into dust. Reika examined the remnants and noticed a symbol etched on one of the armors.
Reika: (murmuring) "This is an ancient symbol… Whoever controls these warriors knows about the Ethereal Spheres."
Kai: "So, it's Zorak?"
Reika: (shaking her head) "No. This is someone else. But we must move quickly."
---
A Mysterious Discovery
That night, they camped under the stars, with Luka tending to the fire. Kai sat beside it, staring into the flames.
Luka: "You know, Kai, your power… it's not exactly normal, is it?"
Kai: (sighs) "I don't fully understand it myself. I just know it's tied to the Ether, and everything started with this scar."
Luka: "Well, if it keeps you alive, it's not so bad, right?"
Reika approached, her face illuminated by the moonlight.
Reika: "Kai, you need to learn to control your power. The more you use it without understanding, the more it will harm you."
---
As they slept, Kai had a dream. He saw a mountain peak covered in ice and a raging snowstorm. At the summit stood a man in a black cloak, his voice as cold as the winds around him.
Voice: "Your destiny is not your own. You will learn the cost of power."
---
Morning in the Mountains
The next morning, their journey led them to the edge of a frozen wasteland. Ahead was a towering mountain pass. The wind was merciless, and their steps grew heavy.
Luka: "If this keeps up, we'll freeze before we reach the summit."
Reika unfolded a map, studying it carefully.
Reika: "We need to find shelter before nightfall."
As they searched for a safe place, Kai felt his scar pulsate again. This time, it wasn't just a feeling—it was a signal. He looked toward a narrow passage and saw a faint glow.
Kai: "There! Something's there!"
---
The Light in the Cave
The group found a cave hidden within the mountains. Inside, they discovered ancient symbols carved into the walls. On the ground lay a crystal, and when Kai touched it, a brilliant light filled the room. The symbols began to move, revealing a riddle.
Reika: "This is… a message. It's thousands of years old."
The symbols spoke of the fate of those who gathered all the Ethereal Spheres—of immense power, but also a great curse.
Kai: (quietly) "So, it's not just a wish. There's a price."
---
End of the Chapter
As they left the cave, night had fallen. The sky was filled with stars, and the air was icy. In the distance, they saw a faint light—a sign they were not alone.
Reika: "We need to be cautious. The North has always been dangerous, but now it's clear someone is following us."
Kai clenched his fist, feeling the weight of his power and responsibility.
Kai: "Let them come. I won't stop until we uncover the truth."
