Chapter 163: Chapter 161: Sophistry (Part I)

"Who dares?"

Xiang Ri's voice thundered across the room, instantly freezing the burly security guards who were about to act. He then grabbed the scoundrel of a doctor by the throat, lifting him effortlessly, his tone turning icy and ominous. "You must have a death wish, but this isn't how you go about it."

"Don't act recklessly!" A middle-aged doctor in a white coat hurriedly emerged from the crowd, shouting with urgency. He wanted to signal the guards to intervene but hesitated, wary of the hostage in Xiang Ri's grasp.

"And who are you to tell me not to act recklessly?" Xiang Ri turned his head, his lips curling into a devilish grin. His grip tightened, causing the wretched doctor's already flushed face to grow pale as his eyes rolled back.

"Sir, let's talk this through..." The middle-aged doctor cautiously stepped forward. When he got a closer look at the man causing this uproar, he gasped in recognition. "It's you?"

"You know me?" Xiang Ri's surprise was evident. On closer inspection, he realized he did indeed recognize the man—it was the very same lecherous-looking doctor who had treated his injured hand during his previous visit with the policewoman. "Ah, you're the one who bandaged my hand that day."

"Yes, yes, that's me." The doctor nodded fervently, quickly adopting a conciliatory tone. "Sir, could you consider letting him go for now?"

The doctor had some inkling of who this unruly man might be. During that last visit, Xiang Ri had been accompanied by a young, strikingly beautiful police officer, whose high-ranking insignia had not gone unnoticed. Any man associated with her was unlikely to be an ordinary individual. While he couldn't fathom how Xiang Ri had the strength to lift an adult with one hand, resolving the immediate crisis was more important than dwelling on such questions.

"For your sake, fine." Though Xiang Ri had no special regard for this doctor, he decided to grant him this favor, releasing his grip and allowing the detestable doctor to drop to the floor.

But letting go didn't mean letting him off so easily. After all, this man had not only shirked his duties but had also had the gall to falsely accuse him. Simply walking away would feel like an injustice.

As the doctor collapsed to the ground, struggling to catch his breath, Xiang Ri "accidentally" nudged his foot. A sickening crack echoed through the room, followed by the doctor's blood-curdling scream as his bone snapped.

Everyone present clearly heard the horrifying sound of breaking bone. They stared at Xiang Ri in terror, too afraid to intervene despite the absence of a hostage.

His slender frame might not seem impressive, but someone who could single-handedly lift an adult was far from ordinary. Moreover, his ruthless precision—delivering a debilitating injury with a mere tap—warned them against provoking him further. Adding to their apprehension, Xiang Ri appeared to be on familiar terms with the attending doctor, giving the hospital a convenient excuse to avoid confrontation.

"Dr. Zhou, are you all right?" The middle-aged doctor crouched down, his face pale. As an orthopedic specialist, he immediately identified which bone had been broken.

Just as he prepared to examine his colleague, Xiang Ri grabbed him by the arm. "Doctor, shouldn't you be attending to the patient on that bed first?" he said, gesturing toward the hospital bed.

"Surgery?" The doctor hesitated, glancing at the bed-ridden patient. Realizing the urgency of the situation, he rushed over. Just as he was about to call for the nurses, he paused abruptly, his expression turning strange. Looking back at Xiang Ri, he asked, "Are you certain this patient requires surgery?"

"What's the matter? Is there a problem?"

Xiang Ri noticed the doctor's peculiar expression and turned his gaze to the scoundrel doctor lying on the floor, now being attended to by a few nurses. As expected, everything had been orchestrated by this despicable man.

In stark contrast to his calm demeanor, Song Qiuheng was gripped by despair. Seeing the doctor's hesitant look and recalling how long her younger brother had been delayed since falling unconscious, she couldn't help but fear the worst. Covering her mouth, she sobbed uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face.

The middle-aged doctor, oblivious to the beauty beside him now reduced to a tearful mess, double-checked the patient's condition before looking up and announcing, "This patient doesn't require surgery. It's just a typical case of unconsciousness. However..." He hesitated, sniffing the air suspiciously. "There's an odd smell of ether here." As an experienced orthopedic specialist, he instantly recognized the faint traces of the volatile chemical lingering in the room.

Song Qiuheng, who had been on the verge of collapse, trembled upon hearing the doctor's assessment. Tears now flowed even more freely, but this time they were tears of relief and joy. At that moment, she didn't care why her brother's condition wasn't as dire as Dr. Zhou had claimed earlier. All that mattered was that he was safe and sound.

"Ether?" The word caught Xiang Ri's attention immediately. With the knowledge of two lifetimes, he was well aware of its properties. While primarily used for anesthesia, it could easily render someone unconscious if misused. As his mind raced, his gaze fell on the scoundrel doctor, who appeared unusually flustered upon hearing the word. The man was hastily instructing the nurses to move him elsewhere.

"Wait a moment!" Xiang Ri's voice cut through the room as he strode forward in just a few steps.

"W-What do you want?" Dr. Zhou stammered, his voice trembling. Fear consumed him; this wasn't just any ordinary man—it was someone who dared to act so boldly within the hospital. And now, with his scheme on the brink of exposure, escape was his only thought.

"What do I want?" Xiang Ri's tone was almost casual, but his smile carried a chilling undertone. "Oh, nothing much. I just have a question for you, Dr. Zhou. How do you explain the smell in this ward?"

"This is a hospital ward," Dr. Zhou retorted through gritted teeth, enduring the searing pain in his injured leg. "It's normal for there to be a variety of chemical smells."

"But this isn't an operating room, is it? Why would anesthetics be necessary here? And how do you explain claiming the patient needed surgery when that doctor just confirmed otherwise?" Xiang Ri's sharp eyes bore into him, leaving no room for evasion.

"I-I never said anything about surgery! You must have misheard!" Dr. Zhou insisted, his voice growing increasingly desperate. He knew full well that admitting the truth would spell his doom, and now he deeply regretted not preparing better for such an eventuality.

"Misheard, you say?" Xiang Ri sneered. "And did I also mishear you demanding 200,000 yuan for the procedure?"

A collective gasp rippled through the room as the surrounding doctors, nurses, and security guards began murmuring amongst themselves. The more astute among them quickly pieced together the situation, their expressions turning disdainful as they realized the vile doctor had been trying to extort money.

What they hadn't guessed, however, was the deeper, more sinister motive behind his actions. The scoundrel doctor wasn't just after money—his ultimate goal was the patient's beautiful sister.

"You're lying! Slandering me!" Dr. Zhou roared, his face contorted in a final, futile attempt to defend himself.

"This matter," the middle-aged doctor interjected calmly, "needs to be brought to the director." His tone carried the weight of authority, and his eyes betrayed a hint of suspicion.

Regardless of the young man's formidable background, the faint but unmistakable scent of ether alone warranted further investigation. However, mindful of the hospital's reputation, he refrained from addressing the issue outright. This was a matter for the director to handle.

"What's going on here?"

The tense silence that followed the middle-aged doctor's statement was abruptly broken by the crisp, authoritative voice of a woman outside the ward.
