The Legendary Supernatural Student

Chapter 164: Chapter 162: Sophistry (Part II)

"It's nothing, Officer. Just a misunderstanding," the middle-aged doctor said with a forced chuckle, though inwardly he was lamenting his misfortune.

The police officer who had just entered was none other than the senior officer who had accompanied the young man involved in this incident during their last encounter. He could only hope the matter wouldn't escalate further. Should the hospital's reputation suffer, the consequences would be dire—patients would avoid coming, the director would be furious, and no one would escape responsibility.

"A misunderstanding?" Tie Wan's gaze swept briefly over the injured doctor before settling on a certain infuriating man. Her expression was layered with emotions too complex to decipher.

"This doesn't seem like a misunderstanding, does it?" Xiang Ri, though momentarily surprised to see her here, couldn't help but feel a twinge of delight. Still, his focus quickly returned to the despicable doctor who had tried to exploit the situation.

"Mr. Xiang, could you explain what happened?" Tie Wan's tone was calm as her eyes flickered, almost imperceptibly, to the beautiful young woman beside him—someone she had encountered a few times before.

Her unfamiliar demeanor made Xiang Ri's expression dim for a moment, but he quickly composed himself, replying evenly, "I think Dr. Zhou would be better suited to answer that question, as he's the one directly involved." He shifted his gaze to the doctor, now being supported by two nurses.

"Dr. Zhou?" Tie Wan's questioning eyes turned to the injured man. Yet inwardly, a wave of anguish surged through her. She had noticed the fleeting change in Xiang Ri's expression, and his indifference stung. How could he be so heartless? There wasn't the slightest hint of apology or guilt in his demeanor—only cold detachment, as if they were strangers. Had he forgotten that she had given him her most precious first time, only to be met with this outcome?

Dr. Zhou, who had been desperate to flee, suddenly seized the opportunity when the police officer addressed him. Pointing an accusatory finger at Xiang Ri, he shouted, "Officer, I want to report him for attempted murder!" If escape was impossible, then he would strike first. After all, doctors and police officers typically shared a degree of camaraderie—surely the officer would lean in his favor.

"Attempted murder? You dare utter such nonsense?" Xiang Ri almost laughed aloud. Was this doctor out of his mind?

"That's right!" Dr. Zhou, emboldened by the attention, decided to go all in. "If I hadn't screamed and drawn everyone's attention just now, I would've been dead by his hands!"

The middle-aged doctor standing nearby felt a chill run down his spine. He couldn't help but think, if you're going to frame someone, at least choose your target wisely. Couldn't you tell these two were acquainted?

Although he wasn't sure why the two now appeared so distant, the scene from that day was still vivid in his mind. Perhaps this was all just an elaborate scheme to deal with Dr. Zhou. Otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence that both had shown up here again?

Even though he believed his speculation wasn't far from the truth, the middle-aged doctor wisely kept his thoughts to himself. For him, maintaining his career prospects was far more important than meddling in this tangled affair. The two before him were clearly not people he could afford to offend.

Xiang Ri remained composed, exuding an air of nonchalance. However, Song Qiuheng, who had finally calmed down from the rollercoaster of emotions, couldn't suppress her anger any longer. She glared furiously at the despicable doctor. "You're lying!"

"Me? Lying? Ha!" Dr. Zhou shamelessly chuckled. "Miss Song, are you accusing me just because I refused to accept your bribe to treat your brother? Everyone here saw clearly what happened—when they arrived, my neck was still being strangled. If that isn't evidence enough, I'm willing to undergo fingerprint analysis!"

Dr. Zhou deliberately steered the conversation toward the so-called "attempted murder," skillfully glossing over the reason for the strangling. Even more cunningly, he implied that the patient's family had tried to bribe him but was rebuffed. This maneuver was calculated—should anyone come forward to testify for the other side, he could discredit them by pointing to their alleged bribery attempt.

"You—" Song Qiuheng trembled with outrage, her entire body quaking. Never in her life had she encountered someone so shameless. She wanted desperately to refute him, but her fury left her utterly speechless.

Xiang Ri placed a gentle hand on her slender shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze. His gaze turned icy as it locked onto the contemptible doctor. "So, you're hoping to keep your other leg intact, are you?"

Dr. Zhou recoiled instinctively, then turned to the nearby policewoman for help. "Officer, you see this, don't you? He's threatening me!"

But Tie Wan appeared oblivious to his plea. Her gaze lingered instead on the hand resting on the shoulder of the stunning young woman beside Xiang Ri. She struggled to hold back the tears clouding her vision. "Mr. Xiang," she said in a low voice, "may I have a word with you in private?"

Dr. Zhou, who had hoped the police officer would come to his aid, was left flabbergasted. He opened his mouth to protest further, but before he could speak, she had already turned and walked away.

The bystanders, stunned by this sudden twist, were left exchanging confused glances. One thing, however, became clear—they now realized that the young man who had just acted so brazenly and the newly arrived policewoman were not only acquainted but appeared to share a deep familiarity.

Xiang Ri, unsure of what the policewoman intended, felt both curious and hopeful. After instructing his apprentice to watch over the beautiful teacher, he quickly followed her down the hallway.

"The letter from this afternoon," Tie Wan began softly, her voice carrying a hint of melancholy. "That was from you, wasn't it?"

"Yes," Xiang Ri admitted with a nod, seeing no reason to hide it.

"Why?" Tie Wan's expression turned agitated. "Why did you write to me? Didn't I already tell you to stop disturbing my peaceful life?"

"Xiao Wan, I only wanted to help you," Xiang Ri said tenderly, his heart aching as he saw the normally strong policewoman on the verge of tears.

"Help me? Then why did you still—" Tie Wan suddenly paused mid-sentence, her gaze fixed on something behind him, a look of shock spreading across her face.

"Xiao Wan," Xiang Ri called out affectionately, not paying much attention to the approaching footsteps behind him. It was a hallway, after all—people coming and going was to be expected. "Will you come back to me?"

Tie Wan's entire body shuddered, but her eyes remained locked on whatever was behind him. Curious, Xiang Ri turned to see what had captured her attention, only to be met with the sight of a pale, ghostly face drenched in glistening droplets of water...
