Episode 15
Episode 15
“I need to understand you since I’m so magnanimous. I’ll make sure to eat this well.”
“Yes! Please be careful when you go inside.”
As Olive moved away with the energy supplement tightly in his hand, I scratched my head while watching his retreating back. However, I soon turned my attention to Flynn.
Flynn’s face had already turned pale. If this continued, it might be a big problem. I led Flynn to a bench and had him sit down. Then, I quickly unpacked the dessert box I had brought and placed it on the bench.
I handed him a fork as his hands were trembling.
Flynn was about to say something but refrained and bit his lip. He started picking at the strawberry cake with his fork and put it in his mouth.
Flynn, who had been eating the cake absentmindedly, suddenly started crying, tears flowing down.
Unfortunately, I had no talent for comforting others. I hesitated for a moment and then handed him a tissue.
“Should I swear at you instead?”
In fact, I was better at that than offering comfort. But Flynn shook his head while sobbing.
I anxiously waited for what Flynn would say next. If I praised Flynn, would it make him feel a bit better? I pondered my words.
The tissue I gave Flynn was soon soaked, and he wiped his eyes with his sleeves. Then he quietly spoke.
“I… I’ll really… succeed.”
Luckily, it wasn’t a negative remark. I breathed a sigh of relief inwardly and nodded eagerly.
“Of course, you’ll succeed! Someone like you is bound to succeed. Who else would if you didn’t?”
My words made Flynn smile through his teary eyes. I carefully asked him.
“Have you not saved up enough money yet?”
Since I had heard that Flynn’s parents also worked at the Duke’s estate, I assumed he might have saved quite a bit of money. After all, the Duke’s estate staff salaries were quite substantial.
Flynn hesitated for a moment when he heard my question, then opened his mouth with some difficulty.
“…Actually, my father used to gamble and, um, he had some debts, so the money he saved wasn’t much.”
I heard that Flynn’s parents had passed away when he was ten.
“But I’ve, I’ve paid off all the debts. I just need to endure a little longer.”
“That’s fortunate.”
“…”
“In the future, no matter what that jerk says, just listen with one ear and let it go with the other. It will be hard…”
“I, I’m okay.”
Flynn replied with a faint smile.
“Honestly, it was a bit tough when you weren’t around. But now that you’re here, eating my food so deliciously, I feel encouraged.”
It was an unexpected comment. Who would have thought that my obsession with food during the war would turn out to be so helpful?
Well, I’m glad it could be of some help.
“It’s really delicious.”
Flynn’s face turned red when he heard my words.
“Also, thank you for helping today.”
Saying this, Flynn tried to return the energy supplement I had given him earlier.
“That’s yours.”
I bragged about the gifts I had bought today.
“How is it?”
“Everyone will probably love them.”
Flynn smiled broadly.
* * *
I had locked myself in the room right after parting with Flynn to talk with Abel, but he hadn’t returned until dinner time.
In the end, I was about to rush to Mr. Henry when I heard the sound of the door opening.
Abel looked at me as if nothing had happened and casually asked, “Have you had your meal?”
“I haven’t.”
“Did you wait for me?”
“Yes. I waited because I had something to ask you.”
I intended it to sound sharp, but Abel seemed completely unfazed. It seemed like Abel was planning to hide the fact that he had met Owen Jasper.
In the end, I went straight to the main topic.
“Why did you go to the square?”
“The square?”
“Why would someone who’s sick of coffee and sweets go to a cafe?”
“…”
Even with my question, Abel remained silent. Maybe he planned to bring up the Owen Jasper story.
Just when I was about to ask again, Abel finally responded.
“Nothing happened. Don’t worry.”
“Isn’t meeting him the problem?”
Listening to my words and seemingly contemplating, Abel took out an envelope from his pocket and tossed it lightly towards me. I received the envelope he threw, wondering, “What is this?”
“Open it.”
The envelope felt extremely light.
Owen Jasper must not have sent an apology letter… Could it be a threat?
With a sense of unease, I opened the envelope. As soon as I saw what was inside, I couldn’t help but frown.
Inside was a check. It wasn’t the check that was the problem; the issue was the owner of the check.
The signature on the check was Hugh.
“…”
Abel nonchalantly said, “I received a letter from an anonymous sender last week. It didn’t specify who sent it, just instructed me to go to the designated location by 3 PM. Naturally, I assumed it was Hugh.”
“But Owen Jasper was there?”
In response to my question, Abel subtly nodded.
“He said it was sent from Seville. That was truly… unexpected.”
I was astonished. He was truly despicable.
He should know better than anyone how much Abel and I had suffered because of him.
Sending Owen Jasper was probably to warn us to never speak ill of Seville again. It was some sort of threat.
The check in my hand couldn’t have been more miserable.
I had never disliked my status up to this point. But now, I was furious.
Even though the line between nobility and commoners has blurred significantly in this world, there are still clear boundaries.
“…How can a rich person give me just this much?”
Sending a message to break off ties with my loved one, and for such a pitiful sum.
Abel, who heard my murmuring, chuckled softly and ruffled my hair, pretending to be nonchalant.
“Shall we go for dinner?”
His words sounded slightly, just a little sad.
The reason he seemed off lately was because of this, right? If he had just let me know, we could have talked it over…
Abel still seems to think of me as a child who needs protection.
Well, even if I were Abel, I wouldn’t rely on me either. I’m not wiser or more trustworthy than him.
However, there was one thing that only I could do.
“Just a moment.”
I quickly retrieved the gifts I had prepared for Abel. Abel looked at me with a puzzled expression but paused for a moment when he saw the small box I handed him.
“Isn’t it beautiful?”
In response to my question, Abel smiled faintly as if there was nothing else he could do. Then, he picked up the necklace from the box and put it on.
The pendant sparkled beautifully and complemented Abel perfectly.
As expected, when you have the face, nothing looks bad on you.
I tried to lighten the mood with a sly grin.
“It’s expensive, so don’t lose it.”
“Don’t lose my bracelet either.”
In response to Abel’s comment, I proudly showed him the bracelet on my right wrist. Abel smiled as if he approved of my response.
However, the weight of a heavy burden still weighed on my heart.
But we were one step closer to a happy ending for Abel and Isis.
So, instead of thinking negatively, I decided to focus on the positive.
They say that behind hardship comes happiness. I wondered just how much happiness was waiting for us after going through such difficulties.
* *
Gunshots echoed in the distance.
The red clay pigeon flying through the sky burst apart as it was hit by Raiden’s bullet.
Perhaps because it was red, it felt ominous. I squinted my eyes and focused on the clay pigeon flying through the sky.
But did Raiden see it from that far away? Even though I knew that something red was flying, it wasn’t clear in my eyes.
I was on my way to bring Raiden a cool drink during his shooting practice. I carefully placed the tray on the table to prevent the drinks from spilling.
Now, I had to wait for Raiden to finish his shooting practice. If it had been in the library or the duke’s room, I might have found it a bit boring.
However, watching Raiden during his shooting practice was quite entertaining, and time passed quickly.
It’s a hit every time the gunshot rings out. I enthusiastically applauded Raiden each time he hit a clay pigeon.
As Raiden approached the table for a short break, I once again applauded him cheerfully.
“You’re really amazing!”
Raiden downed the drink I had brought and then asked me, “Have you ever shot a gun?”
“I have.”
My response seemed quite refreshing to him. Raiden raised his left eyebrow in surprise. He pointed to the gun he was holding and said, “How about showing me your skills?”
“Really? Well, I’m very grateful for your expectations…”
“If you’re that grateful, you should pull the trigger.”
Saying this, Raiden finished the remaining drink, then looked at me sharply while chewing on ice.
Desperately, I continued, “I tried shooting a long time ago, but I’ve lost my touch now, and I don’t have the strength in my arm… Oh! But my legs are strong, and there’s a soccer ball over there! Maybe I could try some leg exercises?”
I quickly pointed to a ball on the ground, which was about the size of a soccer ball.
