chapter 16
15 – You, Kill Him
The lord of the commercial city of Kal Desien, Gidrick, cautiously opened his mouth while kneeling.
“Ma, Master of the Tower, aren’t you rescuing elf slaves…?”
“Well. Do I have a reason to answer that question? In the first place, I kept you alive to hear information, not to ask questions.”
“Th-then where should I start…?”
Franz found Gidrick’s behavior a bit strange.
‘Is he hiding something?’
Gidrick tried to subtly prolong the conversation, as if he had something to rely on.
Whether it was a simple misunderstanding or a sharp intuition, only time would tell.
In fact, it didn’t really matter if he was plotting something behind the scenes.
Whoever came, whatever they did, he was confident he could crush them all.
Anyway, extracting information was the priority now.
Franz spoke calmly.
“Spill everything related to the elf slaves.”
“Th-then let me start by explaining how I came to rescue the elves. It was a little less than a year ago, someone came to the mansion. They said they wanted to trade elves regularly.”
The identity of the person Gidrick mentioned was probably one of the two Hera had told him about.
If not, it was someone who was in cahoots with him.
It was both fascinating and unpleasant that an elf would move directly to sell their own kind.
He wanted to tear open his head and look inside.
“To be honest, it was a tempting offer. As you know, Master of the Tower, elf slaves are quite rare…”
Gidrick watched Franz’s reaction.
Feeling his gaze, Franz openly frowned.
He was clearly testing if Franz was interested in elf slaves.
If he seemed interested, he would probably propose a deal, offering elf slaves in exchange for his life.
He might even go further and request direct protection.
‘He’s really stupid.’
It was understandable since his life was at stake.
But it was hard to see him in a good light.
Franz spoke firmly.
“Keep asking questions, and if you do that one more time, you’ll follow that mousetrap, information or not.”
Franz pointed his finger at the mousetrap embedded in the wall.
Gidrick gulped.
While he treated the lives of slaves carelessly, he seemed to value his own life.
“Ha, it was once a month. When he set the time and place, I sent people to kidnap the elves.”
He didn’t sell them directly but used human hands.
And then he would have blamed everything on Hera.
Among the elves, Hera was the only one who had left the Great Forest and made contact with humans.
They are truly cunning and despicable creatures.
“Yes, next, next, speak quickly.”
“The kidnapped elf slaves…”
The intimidation seemed to be quite effective, as Gidrick began to spill the information he knew.
From the routes used to trade the kidnapped elves to the list of buyers he had.
If only he had been like this from the beginning.
Not that I intend to spare him anyway.
“First, bring that ledger.”
“I’ll bring it right away.”
Gidrick sprang up and headed to the drawer next to the bed.
As he took out the ledger from the drawer, he said,
“Oh, come to think of it, that elf gave me something as a token of trust.”
“A token of trust?”
“Yes, it’s a strange pendant…”
“Bring that too.”
Franz became interested in the item.
If it was called a token of trust, it wouldn’t be something given to just anyone.
Perhaps
‘It might be possible to identify the owner of the item.’
Of course, there was a possibility that it was just something made up and handed over, but there was no harm in accepting it.
Well, Hera would know the details.
Soon, Gidrick gathered the items and turned to approach Franz.
“Ye, here it is.”
Gidrick reached out his hand to offer the item, and just as Franz was about to take it.
Flash-.
The cold blade glinted in the moonlight.
Gidrick gripped the dagger he had hidden under the ledger and thrust it forward.
But the dagger never reached Franz.
Thud-.
With a flick of his finger, Franz made the dagger drop to the floor.
Along with Gidrick’s wrist.
“Ah, aaah-!”
A scream of pain shattered the silence, and blood gushed from the severed wrist.
He had obtained enough information and received the necessary items.
Moreover, he had acquired an important key that might solve this problem, so honestly, it didn’t matter whether the guy lived or died now.
“S-sorry, p-please spare me just this once…! P-please.”
Gidrick crawled on his knees towards Franz.
Franz stared at him blankly, contemplating.
‘Should I let him live?’
This problem was Hera’s to deal with.
So it was up to Hera to decide whether to kill or spare him.
Perhaps Hera might need him.
Having made up his mind, Franz snapped his fingers lightly.
A short flame burst from Gidrick’s wrist.
“Ah, aaah-!!”
Gidrick rolled on the floor in agony as his flesh burned.
It must have hurt a lot, but at least the bleeding had stopped, so there was no need to worry about excessive blood loss.
‘Over there…’
Franz used mana detection to check the situation outside.
The numerous knights had all become cold corpses, and the elf who had been underground was now above ground.
It seemed Hera had successfully rescued the elves.
‘Then, shall we get moving?’
Franz lightly moved his fingers, lifting Gidrick into the air.
Then, they both jumped out of the window together.
Gidrick’s room was on the top floor of the mansion.
From there, the night view of the commercial city unfolded before Franz’s eyes as he fell freely.
It was beautiful, but it didn’t feel very good.
It reminded him of the old days when he used to work late.
Besides, the night view from the top of the magic tower was much more spectacular.
As Franz fell rapidly towards the ground, a blue magic circle was drawn below him.
Then, his speed began to decrease gradually, and by the time he landed, he had almost come to a stop.
Having landed perfectly, Franz immediately approached Hera.
Of course, the bald pig was with him.
“Franz, is everything sorted out?”
“Yeah, it’s all done.”
Franz’s gaze turned to the elves hiding behind Hera.
The elves were huddled together, watching Franz with frightened expressions.
They looked like small animals trembling in the cold.
Watching their long ears twitching up and down was somehow fascinating.
At that moment, Hera suddenly looked at Gidrick and spoke.
“Franz, what about him?”
“Oh, this? I kept him alive just in case you needed him.”
As Franz said that, he threw Gidrick, who had been floating in the air, to the ground.
The elves, seeing this, all flinched and drooped their ears.
‘Oh, is that it?’
The elves’ ears were not for sending telepathic messages but for expressing emotions.
It was a moment of great realization in Franz’s life.
Franz’s gaze then turned back to Hera.
“He’s the owner of this mansion, and he seems to know a lot.”
“What did he know?”
“Yeah, he had records of how elf slaves were traded and the people who had bought them so far. It seems he was supplying elves to humans? I guess that’s one way to put it. Anyway, that’s the kind of guy he is.”
Hera frowned at Franz’s words.
And with lifeless eyes, he glared at Gidrick, who was trembling on the floor.
Seeing Hera like that, Franz involuntarily flinched.
It seemed like the events from a while ago were vividly coming back to him.
No way, it can’t be.
No way she’s talking about the end of the world now, right?
While Franz was rationalizing to himself like that, he suddenly heard Hera’s voice.
It was a very cold voice.
“Franz.”
“Huh…?”
“Did you hear all the information?”
“Probably.”
He must have spilled everything.
He was threatened with his life on the line, so there’s no way he hid anything.
‘Come to think of it…’
Suddenly remembering something he had forgotten, Franz hurriedly rummaged through his pocket and pulled out a necklace.
And showing it to Hera, he said.
“Hera, do you know what this is?”
Hera, facing the necklace, just blinked, frozen in place.
Then she cautiously opened her mouth.
“Where did you get this…?”
“That bald pig said he received it as a token of trust from someone?”
“Yeah, that’s it…. So, in the end, my brother directly contacted this guy….”
Hera muttered to herself.
Then she spoke to the elves behind her.
“You all, kill him. In the most horrific and brutal way.”
It was time for the elves, who had been enslaved, to take their revenge.
