Chapter 46: Chapter 46

Chapter 46: Birds of a Feather

"It's nothing, just a small matter. A sheriff's work is never easy."

The sheriff invited Dutch to have a meal together. Since the town was dry, there would be no alcohol.

Dutch smiled and agreed. With a few words, they quickly became more familiar with each other. Although Dutch didn't tell the whole truth, the sheriff had no reason to be wary of him. After all, who doesn't like flattery?

Outside, Dutch discreetly signaled Javier, who was waiting nearby, not to make any rash moves.

At the restaurant, Dutch and the sheriff were quite chummy despite not drinking. Seizing the opportunity, Dutch said, "Could you let me take those two? I need them for my investigation."

The sheriff, smoking, looked troubled.

"It's not that I don't want to help, but two people died. If I let the prisoners go, I can't explain it to the mayor and the townsfolk. The news of hanging the criminals is already out."

Dutch, who didn't intend to take both, compromised.

"Then, let me take the one who's not dazed. You can hang the other one as planned. That way, you can explain it to the mayor and the townsfolk. We're not far from Valentine, and we'll help each other in the future. Please help me out. I'll be very grateful."

Dutch was good at manipulating people. By initially asking for both and then compromising, he made it hard for the sheriff to refuse again. With the conversation at this point, the sheriff finally agreed and nodded with a smile.

"Why don't you stay the night here and leave tomorrow?"

Dutch politely declined, saying he had urgent work and needed to take the prisoner back for interrogation immediately.

They chatted for a while, and with Dutch's cooperation, the atmosphere was pleasant.

Back at the sheriff's office, Dutch quickly took Micah out. After the sheriff unlocked Micah's handcuffs, Dutch tied him up with a rope and, under the sheriff's watchful eye, slowly left Strawberry with Micah.

As soon as they were out of town, Micah couldn't stand it anymore. "Dutch, that's enough. We're far enough now. Let me go."

If it were Arthur, he might have considered dragging him all the way back. Dutch dismounted and untied Micah. Soon after, Javier and Bill caught up with them.

Bill laughed, "It was so easy. The sheriff badges Arthur got really worked!"

Micah, not pleased, added, "Pfft, you small-minded fool. It's clearly Dutch's skill that convinced that old fool to let me out."

Flattering Dutch, Micah then laughed, "Haha, I'm finally out. You guys go back first. I have some unfinished business to take care of!"

Dutch frowned.

"What business? I just got you out of jail. Don't go causing more trouble."

"I have some important matters to handle here. My horse and guns were taken. I won't leave without them. Don't worry. I'll quietly get my things and leave without causing any trouble."

Hearing this, Dutch thought it made sense. Since Micah's horse and guns were taken, it was only fair to let him get them back. However, Dutch couldn't go back himself, fearing he might run into the sheriff. So, he sent Javier and Bill with Micah.

"Don't cause any trouble. Micah, stay hidden and let Javier and Bill handle it. Lead the way and hurry back to the camp. I'll go ahead."

Dutch left first, while Micah, Javier, and Bill returned to Strawberry under the cover of night. Following Micah's lead, they quickly reached a house.

"Knock! Knock! Knock!" Micah banged on the door and shouted, "Skinny! Come out!"

Pushing the door hard and shouting, Micah almost woke up the neighbors. Javier and Bill were about to stop him when the door opened, and a voice from inside said, "I'm not 'Skinny.' My name is Norman..."

Micah dragged the fat man named Norman out and threw him to the ground, then barged into the house. Javier and Bill were confused, if they remembered correctly Norman was someone who used to hang out with Micah.

"You fat pig always ruin everything! Give me a minute..."

"Hello... Maddy! Did you miss me?"

Soon after, a gunshot and a woman's painful scream echoed. Micah came out, fastening his gun belt, and said to the stunned duo.

"They took my things..."

"Bang!" Micah shot the still-lying Norman dead.

Javier finally realized what was happening and angrily asked, "What are you doing?! Damn it!"

The gunshots in the quiet mountain town had awakened some residents, who arrived with guns in hand.

Micah untied the horse at the door, mounted it, and yelled at Javier.

"Mexican, stop talking! It's time for you to help. Let's fight our way out!"

Javier felt dizzy, wondering why he had to rescue such a scumbag.

Bill cursed, "Damn it, Arthur was right. You're a disaster."

The three fought their way out as they retreated.
