Chapter 47: Chapter 47

Chapter 47: Rescuing Sean (Part One)

"In the past six months, I've had enough of Micah's mouth. Honestly, the thought of him being hanged and finally shutting that mouth forever doesn't bother me."

Arthur's blunt expression of his feelings towards Micah was clearly shared by Lenny and John.

Especially Lenny. Micah had been insulting Lenny a lot, and his mouth was indeed annoying. Lenny recalled and said, "But, Micah, at least on the surface, always seemed to respect you. Why do you hate him so much?"

John looked disdainful and remained silent.

Arthur smiled and said, "Oh, that's his first mistake."

Just surface-level respect.

Lenny didn't understand what Arthur meant but nodded without asking further.

Trelawny, listening, just smiled. John, on the other hand, had his feelings written all over his face. He hadn't spoken much since waking up, making the journey unusually quiet. While it was unlike the usual John, Arthur appreciated the silence.

In any case, Arthur didn't continue the conversation.

The rest of the journey was quiet.

At Riggs Station, the four disembarked, retrieved their horses from the rear carriage, and Arthur led the way, sticking to paths away from the main roads. They successfully met Charles on a small hill outside Blackwater.

It was already dark. Charles was cooking over a fire in front of his makeshift tent.

"I thought you'd arrive in the morning. Come sit and have some coffee. I just brewed it."

Clearly, Charles didn't have enough cups. A small iron pot was passed around, and Arthur and Lenny took a few sips. It was strong and bitter. Trelawny and John declined.

Trelawny, not even sitting down, said, "I'm going into town to gather some information. Wait for me here."

Without giving others a chance to speak, Trelawny left.

Under the starry sky, they sat in silence again.

Logically, they should have asked Charles about the situation, but since Trelawny had gone to town, they decided to wait for his return. The information he brought back would be more accurate than just observing from outside.

Arthur warmed his hands by the fire and finally broke the silence.

"Have you seen Sean?"

Charles, drinking coffee, nodded and put the cup, more like a tin can, aside. He replied, "Yes, Sean is being held in a camp outside town, the one we can see down there. But there are too many people. Bounty hunters and Pinkerton detectives are guarding it tightly."

Lenny sat quietly, listening without interrupting, and silently gathered branches to keep the fire going. John remained as he was, sitting there.

Charles, seeing only Arthur, Lenny, John, and Trelawny, had wanted to ask earlier but held back because of Trelawny. It wasn't that he didn't trust Trelawny, but he didn't like his style and demeanor, so he was more cautious. With only Lenny, Arthur, and John present, Charles finally asked.

"Where's Dutch? Why are only a few of you here?"

"The others went to rescue Micah. They said he was going to be hanged." Lenny explained, not wanting to delve into the details. He had gone with Micah to Strawberry, and it was a touchy subject.

Lenny felt he understood Arthur a bit more. Arthur clearly didn't like such unlucky topics.

If Arthur knew Lenny thought this way, he would deny it. Talking about Micah's misfortune wasn't unlucky at all.

Charles, hearing Lenny's brief explanation and seeing Arthur not speaking, understood it was better to drop the subject. While curious why Dutch chose to send so few people to rescue Sean, Charles wasn't interested in knowing why Micah was caught and why he was to be hanged.

Soon, it was late at night, and dawn was approaching. At that moment, Trelawny returned.

"So, how many people are in the camp? Did you get a clear count?" Charles asked, putting down his gun. He had tried to count but found it impossible with so many people coming and going.

Trelawny, out of breath, said, "I can only say there are many. There are police everywhere, and there are posters of Dutch and Hosea everywhere."

Arthur frowned, wondering why Hosea's picture was there. Damn it. He also asked, "Did you see Sean?"

Trelawny nodded.

"Not only did I see him, but I also found out that after dawn, Sean will be transferred to a camp near the Upper Montana River and then sent to a federal prison in the west."

Hearing this, Arthur realized the situation was worse than he had anticipated. Rescuing Sean would require more manpower than he had thought.

John finally spoke, "We can't just storm a federal prison, can we?"

Lenny, frowning, agreed. Storming a federal prison wasn't realistic. He suggested, "Should we try to rescue him now, or... give up?"

No one would blame Lenny for suggesting giving up. The situation was more difficult than expected, and with fewer people due to Micah's rescue, it would be hard to rescue Sean whether they tried at the camp outside town or the federal prison.

"We won't leave anyone behind, Lenny." Charles said firmly.

"Yes, of course. We won't." Arthur nodded, but his mind was on Dutch's operation. It should be over by now.

Sitting by the fire, Arthur suddenly remembered more of that hazy dream. Micah and Strawberry….. Fuck! Now He was worried not only about rescuing Sean but also about Micah's situation.

He was both worried and angry.

Why hadn't he thought harder to remember the dream? Now, he could only hope Dutch followed the plan and would bring Micah back to camp after finishing. Otherwise, the "Strawberry Massacre" might happen again.

After the pessimistic discussion, Trelawny said, "Gentlemen, this is where you'll see my value. Didn't I say earlier? Ike Skelding's men will first take Sean to a nearby camp before handing him over to the authorities for prison."

Arthur put Micah's situation aside and thought about what Trelawny said. The best opportunity to rescue Sean would be before they reached the camp.

"So, the plan is set. We'll stop them before they reach the camp. Charles and Lenny, you go north. I'll take John and go through the valley to meet you. This way, we won't lose them no matter which path they take."

"What about me? Arthur, you didn't forget about me, right?"

"Trelawny, are you joining us in the action?" Arthur asked incredulously.

"Mr. Morgan, although I am a gentleman, I am also a member of the gang. Rescuing Sean requires my help. You'll find I can be quite useful."

"Alright, you'll join me in the action."

It wasn't that Arthur intentionally left Trelawny out, but in his memory, Trelawny hadn't participated in the implementation stages of any operations. For example, now, Trelawny didn't even have a gun.

Oh well, if he insisted, they'd take him along.

There was still some time before dawn.

Lenny took over Charles's previous task, observing the area below, while the others rested to gather their strength for the action at dawn.
