Chapter 48: Chapter 48
Chapter 48: Rescuing Sean (Part Two)
"Everyone, they're moving."
Hearing Lenny's words, everyone sprang into action. Arthur came to Lenny's side, took the telescope and observed for a moment.
"Let's go. They're on the boat. Remember to stick to the plan."
Everyone mounted their horses. According to the previous plan, Charles and Lenny headed there on another way, while Arthur took John and Trelawny through the valley on the other side.
Arthur's group followed the river, keeping pace with the small boat transporting Sean. The boat moved slowly, and Trelawny suggested they follow at the same pace, pretending to be out hunting.
"Mr. Morgan, I must remind you that the situation in Blackwater might not be as simple as you think."
Hearing this, John asked,"What do you mean? We've already shaken off the pursuit. As long as we avoid the heat for a while, no one will find us. This country is vast; there must be places for us to stay."
Trelawny didn't refute John's words.
"I hope so. I'm just telling you what I know. The authorities and those close to them are very angry."
Arthur understood Trelawny's warning. As for John's words, Arthur could only think that John truly believed in Dutch's words without question. He was naive to think the situation was so simple.
"So, Trelawny, do you have any good advice?" Arthur wanted to hear his suggestions.
Trelawny didn't expect Arthur to ask him this.
"Leave the country or join them. Mr. Morgan, have you noticed the new law firm in Valentine?"
Although Arthur didn't know what Trelawny was getting at, he had been to the firm when he handled the hotel contract. He remembered the name was J.W. Smith & A.J. Mackey Law Firm.
"Yes, I've done business there."
Trelawny looked surprised at Arthur, as if he was seeing him in a new light. He finally smiled.
"Then I think you understand what I mean. Times have changed, gentlemen. There was no such thing as law in the West before."
John, listening to their conversation, became impatient. Were they here to rescue Sean or just for a leisurely chat? Unable to bear it, he interrupted, "Arthur, pay attention to your surroundings. There are Pinkerton detectives all around us."
Trelawny wasn't angry at John's interruption. He smiled and continued.
"You're right. The southern bank of West Elizabeth is a very unfriendly place now."
Arthur ignored John, thinking he was at an age where he was annoying and disliked.
"Forget it, I'll go ahead and scout. You follow the boat." Feeling unwelcome, John went ahead to scout.
Watching John leave, Trelawny hesitated but finally asked a question.
"Arthur, besides finding out about Sean, I also heard a name, Heidi McCourt. I kept hearing her name in town... They say she was a young mother killed by Dutch on the boat."
"I didn't know that. I wasn't there."
"Well... I also heard some details. They say Ms. McCourt was a beautiful girl until Dutch blindfolded her and hanged her with a rope outside..."
This was the first time Arthur heard the specific details of the woman killed on the boat since the Blackwater incident. He was shocked. The 'brutal death' others mentioned was actually this absurd? He had thought Dutch had accidentally shot a woman.
"I know it sounds unbelievable, but it's the first time I've heard it."
"I shouldn't say these things, but Arthur, please don't tell anyone I told you. The Pinkertons haven't found the hidden money, but I hope you at least know where it is."
Arthur wasn't sure if Trelawny's words were a gesture of goodwill. If he remembered correctly, Trelawny had just made a good profit from the gambling business.
"Only Dutch and Hosea know where the money is. They said it was stuck in town."
Hearing this, Trelawny sighed.
"Oh, I didn't expect you to trust them so much. Was I wrong to say that earlier? I believe trusting someone must feel wonderful. My parents would sell me for a barrel of wine. In fact, I think they might have tried."
If Arthur didn't know that he had brought Trelawny many benefits and that these words were out of concern for Arthur's interests, he might have suspected Trelawny of trying to sow discord between him and Dutch.
Would it benefit Trelawny to sow discord? Obviously not, so Arthur preferred to see it as a gesture of goodwill.
"Ah, John's back."
John came straight to them and said, "I didn't see any one ahead."
Arthur was still thinking about other things, and Trelawny nodded.
"By the way, I know both of you. Don't draw your guns immediately. First, see what the situation is. It's best if there's no shooting."
"Understood."
John looked at the boat sailing along the river and said, "Do you think they can see us?"
"If they can see us, as Trelawny said, go slow and make them think we're just out hunting. Act natural. For now, let's quietly keep an eye on the target."
John was dissatisfied with Arthur's request to be quiet as soon as he returned, even though he had seen them chatting. So he started asking questions.
"By the way, where were you for a while?"
"I like evading the law and sleeping in the mud with you homeless folks, but I also have other things to do."
"So, did your errand go well?"
"You know how life is, never a straight road anywhere."
"Especially with you?"
"Nice to know I'm missed, though. Have you run out of people to rob?"
"Oh, we'll never run out of people to rob."
"But without me you'll not find the caliber of victim that I find."

Arthur watched John chatting with Trelawny and looking smug, wondering if he had been this annoying and disliked at John's age.
Definitely not. He wasn't this talkative back then. Arthur found John's recovery from his unknown silence quite headache-inducing.
Soon, amidst John's chatter, they reached their destination following the boat.
