chapter 31 - Divine Cat Mii-chan receives the requested shipment
31 Divine Cat Mii-chan receives the requested shipment
The next morning, I woke up at the fourth bell. I went back to sleep and woke up to the sound of the eighth bell.
Since Mii-chan was also awake, I got dressed and headed to the tavern next door for breakfast.
I ordered breakfast and, as instructed yesterday, arranged for laundry service. I was given a wooden tag with a number and told to pick it up the next morning. The breakfast was just okay, nothing special. It might be worth finding a place with better food. Mii-chan didn’t seem to mind, since she was eating her canned cat food.
“Mii~”
After waiting for Mii-chan to finish eating, we set out to pick up the delivery, our main task for the day. After navigating with a map, we finally arrived at the workshop. The area was filled with similar-looking buildings, so I worried that if we got lost, it might be hard to find our way out…
“Excuse me! Is anyone here?”
“Mii~”
An elderly man, who appeared to be a dwarf, came out from the back wearing glasses.
“What do you want, kid? Running an errand?”
Once again with the ‘kid’…
“I’m an employee of the Quarto Hunter’s Guild! Even if it doesn’t look like it!”
“Oh, uh… right. So, what do you need?”
I handed him the receipt and my employee ID.
“Hmm. Oh yeah, I remember something like that… Hold on a moment.”
The dwarf craftsman left after saying that, and after a short wait, he returned carrying a box.
“This is what you ordered. Check it out.”
I opened the box to find a megaphone, labeled as an “amplifier” by my appraisal skill. It seemed quite similar to ones from Earth.
The box contained a simple instruction manual, but from what I could tell, the device didn’t differ much from its earthly counterparts.
I took it out and noticed that a power core was already installed. I turned it on, set the volume to the lowest setting, and tested it.
“Testing, testing, one-two-three. The weather today is clear, the weather today is clear.”
“Hey, keep it down!”
Despite being on the lowest setting, the volume was quite loud and clear, without any distortion. It seemed to be of high quality.
The dwarf craftsman looked at me with curiosity. “Kid, you seem to know what this is. How come? Even in the guild, only a few people know about these.”
“I’ve seen something like this before. Is it rare here?”
The dwarf seemed to deflate a bit, muttering to himself, “Someone thought of it before me…”
Oops, I might have made a mistake there. I quickly tried to smooth things over.
“I’ve received it, and it seems to be in perfect working condition. The performance is excellent, and there’s no damage. It’s a great piece of work.”
“Is that so? Well, it’s my pride and joy, after all. Hehe.”
“Mii…”
Even Mii-chan seemed unimpressed with the craftsman’s bashful expression.
“So, could you recommend a good blacksmith?”
“Kid… isn’t it a bit cruel to build someone up just to let them down? You’re looking at one right now…”
“Actually, I’m looking for a blacksmith for a specific type of work.”
“I’m a blacksmith myself, you know. What are you trying to make?”
I showed him the sketches in my notebook.
“What’s this? I can’t figure out the purpose.”
“Can you make these without knowing the purpose?”
“These two shouldn’t be too hard, but this one is pretty complex. It won’t be simple or cheap.”
I see, the automatic design might be difficult.
“How much would it cost to make these two?”
“The purpose isn’t clear, so it could vary depending on the materials, but I’d estimate around ten thousand to twenty thousand Leto.”
That’s cheaper than I expected.
“If I tell you the purpose, will you be able to make them?”
“Are you in a hurry?”
“The timeframe is around fifteen days.”
“Hmm. Alright, I’ll take on the job.”
So, we brought the dwarven craftsman, Zelgad, to a nearby vacant lot. Before coming here, we picked up a plank from Zelgad’s workshop. I placed a stone on the plank and demonstrated my Air Skill, aiming at a pile of dirt.
“Interesting. What kind of skill is that?”
“It’s an Air Skill.”
“An Air Skill…?”
He seemed genuinely surprised. I then drew on the ground to explain the concept.
“I see, you compressed the air and propelled it out. So, this design is for creating compressed air and then launching it, right?”
Wow, Zelgad’s understanding is impressive, as expected from someone who claims to be a skilled craftsman.
“It seems like quite a lot of force will be exerted inside…”
“Yes, compressing the air and then expanding it further at the rear will increase the power even more.”
“How much do you intend to launch?”
I drew a picture of hollow-point bullets and pointed rifle bullets, estimating the size to be around 6 millimeters in diameter and 15 millimeters in length.
“Interesting. If this works, it will be great news for those with Air Skills. I’ll create a prototype over the next couple of days. Come back in two days.”
He seems very motivated. Good luck, I’ll be back.
The megaphone was stored in Mii-chan’s bag for safekeeping. Carrying it around myself would surely result in damage; this way, it’s safe. With this, once I return to Quart, the request will be complete.
Since I have some time, I decided to head to the bazaar to make some extra money.
There are all sorts of people and items here. Mii-chan seems very interested, perched on my shoulder and looking around.
Thanks to a slight improvement in my appraisal skills, I can better assess the value of items than before.
I was tempted to buy some adzuki beans I found. I could make sweet red bean paste with them! But sugar is incredibly expensive here. Brown sugar is commonly available, but I haven’t seen white sugar yet. Honey seems to be a more common sweetener here. I wonder if I can make red bean paste with honey? In the end, I bought the adzuki beans anyway.
I also picked up a few accessories and weapons as usual. The question is, where to sell them? While I still have some money, I’m worried about the cost of making the gun. I’ll likely need spare guns and ammo as well.
You can never have too much money. Mii-chan, do you understand?
“Mii~”
