50 Divine Cat: Mii-chan’s Sneaky Snack is Discovered
I left the fried chicken and potato fries to Sykes.
The red beans were getting soft, so it was time to start making the bean paste.
Mii-chan’s tail was wagging more vigorously, and she was watching my hands intently. It made me a bit nervous to be stared at so seriously.
I scooped a small portion of the finished paste onto a spoon and placed it in front of Mii-chan.
“Mii~?”
“A taste test.”
“Mii~”
She finished it neatly. When I told the staff that it was ready, everyone gathered in the tavern. Even you, Eva…?
The fried chicken and potato fries were being served quickly.
By now, no one in the guild was working. Is this really okay?
Just then, new arrivals came into the guild. It was Guild Master Selyon and his party.
“What are you all doing?”
“Ho ho ho… We’re preparing to welcome the tired Guild Master and his team…”
“I see. Sorry for the trouble. How did you know we were coming back?”
“W-Well, you see… We got a message from the guards.”
Eva was doing her best to cover up.
Just then, Sykes brought a jug of ale, which I chilled to perfection with my water skill.
“Oh, Sykes. You’re quite considerate.”
The Guild Master and a few guild staff members were seated at a table, and the cat beast waitress brought out the fried chicken and potato fries.
“Cold ale is so delicious…”
“This meat is amazing.”
“Is this potato? It goes great with ale.”
Seeing the Guild Master so calm, the staff members who thought everything was fine at the village joined in the eating and drinking. I was being rushed by the ladies, so I focused on toasting bread and spreading the bean paste. I’m not a cook, you know!
Once everyone had eaten and settled down, they waited for the Guild Master to speak.
“I’ve managed to drive them off for now. However, I believe this is not the end.”
According to the Guild Master, there might even be a Goblin General involved. Typically, a single Goblin Leader forms a settlement. When multiple settlements come together, a Goblin Knight emerges, and if several Goblin Knights gather, a Goblin General is formed. Above that is the Goblin King, the ultimate monster, essentially a Demon Lord.
The Guild Master said that three Goblin Leaders have been confirmed in the neighboring village of Quart, so it is believed that there is at least one Goblin Knight involved. It seems that in the raid on the neighboring town of Quint, Goblin Knights were also involved, leading to this conclusion.
Although the connection between Quart and Quint is not yet clear, if a Goblin King is born, it will be a major problem. Everyone is worried that it could lead to a repeat of the great war from decades ago.
Given the seriousness of the situation, it has been decided to request the national knights and summon hunters and mercenaries from other towns. That seems only natural.
“And now, Nero-kun, are you here?”
Huh? Me? What’s going on?
“Tomorrow, after speaking with the lord, we need to send an envoy to the capital. I would like you to be the advance party and head to the capital.”
“Huh?”
“Why me?”
“Your battle horse can reach the capital within seven days, even if you travel slowly. Using an emergency messenger horse would take at least ten days. Time is of the essence. Can I count on you?”
“Seriously? I’ve said it before, but I have no experience with horseback riding! Plus, I’ve never been to the capital, and what about camping out?”
“With a battle horse, you can reach a town or village within a day, so there’s no need to worry about camping out. Rarely will any monster be able to catch up with a battle horse’s speed.”
“Rarely” means it’s possible, doesn’t it? And Smir is still recovering from illness.
“You’ve seen your battle horse; it seems to have already recovered. I’m not asking you to make it run at full speed. Even at a normal pace, a battle horse will easily outpace an ordinary horse.”
Nero had no counterargument.
“When do we depart?”
“We need to get a letter from the lord, so the day after tomorrow.”
“Understood. I’ll go.”
“Good. I’m glad you understand. Hmph.”
Nero was frustrated by the Guild Master’s nonchalant attitude. He was ready to take his frustration out on the fried chicken!
He took the next day off to prepare for the journey. That morning, he talked to Smir while taking care of her, and Smir seemed enthusiastic about the trip. Nero hoped for a smooth journey.
After caring for Smir, he learned how to properly attach and remove horse gear from the stable hands. Once he managed to meet the standard, he went to a general store and bought two large barrels and a large leather water bag for Smir.
He filled the water bag, collected feed from the stable, and had Mii-chan store everything in her carrier bag.
Next, he went to Zergado’s workshop to explain the trip to the capital and paid the remaining balance, saying he would return to collect the items later.
He also stopped by the bazaar to buy some fruit.
With all these tasks done, it was already past noon. Back at the Hunter’s Guild, he called out to Mii-chan for lunch, but she didn’t come out of her carrier bag. Thinking she might be asleep, he opened the bag to find Mii-chan with a bloated belly, lying on her back and burping.
There were black stains around Mii-chan’s mouth. Nero realized what had happened.
“Mii-chan, sit here!”
“Mii…”
