Chapter 8: The Alchemist's Warning
The rare alchemy herb sat comfortably in Adam's inventory, its faint glow a reminder of his growing intelligence. The excitement of seizing a 3-star opportunity washed over him as he navigated the crowded streets, but he knew better than to rest on his laurels.
Opportunities don't come without risk.
His gaze returned to the alchemist, who was still standing near the herbs. The green-robed figure hadn't noticed Adam's purchase, or so it seemed. But as Adam was about to leave, the alchemist turned his head slightly, as if he heard something.
His voice was quiet, but high-pitched, loud enough to stop Adam in his tracks.
"You, my son," the alchemist called, his tone neither harsh nor harsh. "Come here."
Adam hesitated, looking around to make sure there wasn't another "man" they were talking about. When no one answered, he tensed and approached cautiously.
The alchemist's face was partially hidden under the hood, but Adam saw sharp, piercing eyes that seemed to pierce through.
"You have fast hands," the alchemist said slowly. "And even faster instincts."
Adam blinked, unsure whether to take that as a compliment or a warning. "I don't know what you're talking about."
The alchemist laughed in a dry, knowing tone. "Don't pretend. I saw you looking at the jar before you bought it. You knew its value, right?"
Adam frowned, searching for an answer that wouldn't reveal too much. "I just have a good eye for value."
The alchemist tilted his head, studying it for a moment before pulling out a bag. They opened it enough for Adam to see a slightly blue glittering powder.
"Then perhaps you will understand this," they said, their voices almost a whisper.
Adam's system immediately powered up.
< Opportunity Revealed: 4-Star Alchemical Catalyst (Moon Leaf Dust). >
His breath hitched. A 4-star property? The system had rarely detected anything so valuable before.
"I don't know," Adam lied, maintaining his casual tone. "It just looks like crushed grass to me."
The alchemist's eyes narrowed, but they didn't stop. Instead, they removed the bag from his clothes and moved closer.
"Here's some free advice," they said quietly. "People like you, with quick hands and sharp eyes, don't last long unless you know the rules of this world. Opportunities are everywhere, but so are those who are willing to kill for them."
Adam stood up. Was that a threat? Or just a warning?
The alchemist stood up, his tone sharpening. "I will be staying at Sparrow's Rest for the next few days. If you wish to make money or learn more about what you have discovered, come and find me."
Before Adam Unable to answer, the alchemist turned and disappeared into the crowd, his green cloak blending into the sea of merchants and buyers.
< System warning: The destination option remains active. The host may pursue further benefits. >
Adam let out a slow breath, his heart still pounding. The system's advice only added to his anxiety. The alchemist clearly knew more than they were letting on, and his mention of "rules" seemed too specific to be a coincidence.
Still, the promise of parts and knowledge was enticing. What if they really had a 4-star item. ..
"Looks like I got a new bullet," Adam muttered, a slight smile tugging at his lips.
For now, though, he had more pressing concerns. He needed a safe place to rest and sort out his recent gains. The alchemist could wait, but not for long.
