Chapter 9: Chapter 9: A Dangerous Invitation
Chapter 9: A Dangerous Invitation
Adam spent most of the morning hiding in a quiet corner of the slums, carefully examining his inventory. The spirit jade pendant hummed softly with energy, and the rare alchemy herb still radiated a soft light. Each item was a step forward, a small, meaningful piece of the power he so desired.
But the alchemist's warning lingered in his mind.
< System warning: opportunity often attracts competition. The host is advised to increase his power and resources before pursuing higher-level objectives. >
Adam frowned. Power and resources. Two things he didn't have, at least not yet. But if the alchemist offered the job, this could be his chance to get both. He couldn't ignore a 4-star prospect, even if it meant taking a risk.
By noon, Adam had made up his mind. He slipped through the crowded streets to Sparrow's Rest, a modest inn located on the edge of the commercial district. The building was old but well-kept, its wooden sign flapping softly in the wind.
Adam opened the door, the smell of spicy stew and stale beer wafting through. A handful of customers filled the common room, but it didn't take long for them to see the green-robed alchemist sitting in the corner.
They didn't look up as Adam approached, their attention focused on a small bottle of sparkling liquid, which they were turning lazily in one hand.
"You're braver than I thought," the alchemist said without introduction, in a neutral tone.
Adam slid into the seat across from them, keeping his expression guarded. "You said you had a job. "
The alchemist finally looked up, his piercing eyes shining with a mixture of amusement and approval. "Straight to the point. I like it."
They carefully placed the vial before leaning forward. "I need someone with yours. .. instinct. A shipment arrived tonight - rare ingredients destined for a rival of mine. I love them ."
Adam raised an eyebrow. "Do you want me to steal it from you?" The alchemist shrugged. "Call it what you will. I call it... an opportunity." "
< System Warning: Mission Discovered. >
< Mission: Grab the Cargo >
Difficulty: Medium
Reward: Alchemical Catalyst (4 stars) + 20 silver
Adam's reward was more than tempting. I could ignore it.
The alchemist smiled weakly. "The charge will be maintained, of course. Nothing too serious, just silly. I doubt they're any more advanced than tempering the body. But I think someone like you knows how to take care of yourself." "
Adam hesitated. He wasn't a fighter, and his current stats were barely enough to defend against a street thug, let alone professional guards. One step forward. will give you a temporary boost, enough for even the odds. "
< System Warning: Temporary Power Item Revealed. >
< Item: Small Elixir of Strength >
Effect: Increases raw power by +10 for one hour.
Adam stared at the vial, his mind racing. he, but it wouldn't make her invincible if she accepted the job, she would have to rely on more than brute force to succeed.
He took the bottle and put it in his inventory. "I will."
The alchemist's smile widened. "ENDED. The cargo will arrive at the East Gate shortly after sunset. Don't let me down."
Adam stood up, heart pounding, as he walked towards the door. The stakes were higher than anything he had faced before, but the rewards were worth the risk.
As he stepped out into the street, the system's voice rang out once more.
< Mission accepted. Recommended preparations. >
Adam smiled. "Let the game begin."
