Thick Of It

Chapter 29: Chamber of secret

Christmas had passed, but Hogwarts was drowning in unease. The petrifications had taken a toll, one after another, and the whispers of shutting down the school were louder than ever. Jason wandered the silent halls, his thoughts consuming him like flames licking at parchment.

Jason: [to himself, his voice low] "Salazar Slytherin. A name that carries equal parts fear and disdain. I can see the merit in his vision, though. Blood-born only—his Hogwarts would've been a stronghold, a beacon of knowledge for his kin. A clever move. Rule the ignorant masses while sharpening your own blade in secret. Textbook strategy."

He paused near a window, gazing out at the frosted grounds.

Jason: "But here's the flaw, old Salazar. You didn't plan for your ambition to survive beyond your circle. You were too small in your thinking. Sure, your followers—cunning snakes, all of them—have done well for themselves. The Blacks, the Malfoys... dripping in gold and privilege, manipulating the laws like strings on a puppet. But your vision? It's dust. Forgotten, despised. Gryffindor? Celebrated. Ravenclaw? Idolized. Hufflepuff? Loved. And you? A cautionary tale."

He smirked faintly, shaking his head.

Jason: "It's because he wasn't truly great. Greatness isn't about hoarding power for yourself; it's about casting your net wider, reaching for something bigger. Grindelwald—now he was great, in his twisted way. A visionary, for better or worse. Voldemort? A footnote in comparison. Just another snake with a penchant for bad choices."

Jason straightened his robes, his thoughts shifting gears. His footsteps echoed in the corridor as he turned toward a familiar path.

Jason: "Enough about history. Today's about the present. I know Ginny's in trouble. The signs are clear as day. But if the story holds, things should follow their path. Still… chaos is a ladder, isn't it? And I've spent the year reading, preparing, waiting for this moment. If there's ever a time to make my move, it's now. No Dumbeldore today ."

He stopped abruptly as a flicker of movement caught his eye. Ginny Weasley, pale and distant, was walking toward the girl's bathroom.

Jason: [his voice a whisper, a smirk tugging at his lips] "The time has come. Let's step up on theladder ."

His eyes sharpened, his posture relaxed but calculated. He began to follow her, each step deliberate, his wand subtly tucked into his palm. The air grew colder, heavier, as the reality of what lay ahead began to sink in. But Jason? He wasn't afraid. He was ready.

Jason: "Salazar, you left your mark, but starting today… my turn to leave mine."

The corridor was deathly quiet except for the faint echo of dripping water. Jason stood at the entrance, his eyes scanning the foreboding stone pillars adorned with snakehead carvings. At the far end, Ginny Weasley stood at the feet of Salazar Slytherin's towering statue, her movements uneasy. Jason's voice cut through the silence.

Jason: "Ginny! What are you doing here?"

Ginny spun around, startled. Her face was pale, her hand clenching her wand tightly behind her back.

Ginny: "What are you doing here, Jason?"

Jason: [walking cautiously toward her] "The bathroom door was open, and I saw you… jump into what looked like a massive pipe. What is this place?"

Ginny glanced around nervously, her eyes flicking to the snake motifs carved into the stone.

Ginny: "I… I just found it today. Exploring, you know."

Jason's sharp gaze didn't miss the tremor in her voice or the way her wand remained hidden behind her back.

Jason: [dryly] "Oh, really? Just stumbled upon it, did you? And all this… snake décor? Totally coincidental?"

Ginny took a step back as Jason advanced, her breathing shallow. Her grip tightened on her wand.

Ginny: "You shouldn't be here, Jason. It's not safe."

Jason halted, his radar sense tingling as it detected her subtle movement.

Jason: [his voice calm but firm] "Ginny, what are you hiding? Is this the Chamber of Secrets?"

Before Jason could take another step, Ginny fired a spell at him. His radar sense flared as he sidestepped the hex effortlessly, his wand now drawn.

Jason: [raising an eyebrow] "Well, that's a fine way to greet someone trying to help. Care to explain, Ginny?"

Ginny's hand trembled, her voice a mix of fear and defiance.

Ginny: "You don't understand! You shouldn't have followed me!"

Jason: [pointing his wand at her] "So it's you, then. The one behind all of this? The petrifications, the attacks?"

Ginny's eyes flickered with an unnatural glow, her voice suddenly laced with malice.

Ginny: "You need to leave, Jason. Now!"

=====

Jason and Ginny stood facing each other in the eerie corridor, tension thick in the air. The flickering torchlight cast long shadows, dancing across the serpent-carved walls.

Jason: [calmly, but with a sharp edge] "Ginny, stop this. "

Ginny didn't respond. Instead, she raised her wand, her movements jerky and unnatural. Her lips twisted into a sneer that wasn't her own.

Ginny: "Leave, Jason. You don't belong here."

Before Jason could respond, she fired a curse. "Confringo!" The blast hit the wall inches from Jason, sending shards of stone flying. He had felt the disturbance through his radar sense and ducked instinctively, his wand already raised.

Jason: [with a flick of his wand] "Protego!" A shimmering shield deflected the debris as he countered with a precise "Stupefy!"

Ginny sidestepped, her movements unnervingly swift. Her wand slashed through the air, firing a quick succession of hexes.

Ginny: "Petrificus Totalus! Expulso!"

Jason rolled to the side, the spells narrowly missing him, the latter blasting a chunk of the stone floor. He could feel the oppressive weight of the magic in the air. Ginny's attacks were ferocious, but they lacked the control of riddle .

Jason: [dodging another spell, his voice steady] "This isn't you, Ginny! ."

Her face twisted in anguish for a brief moment. Her arm faltered, and Jason saw the flicker of a young girl trapped within her own body.

Ginny: [her voice breaking] "Jason… help me. Please!"

Jason hesitated, just long enough for the malevolent force within Ginny to seize control again. Her face hardened, and she fired another curse, her wand a blur.

Ginny: "Oppugno!"

A swarm of conjured birds flew toward Jason, claws and beaks aimed at his face. His radar sense flared, allowing him to anticipate their movements. With a sharp upward motion of his wand, he cast "Depulso!" The birds were flung backward, dissipating into a mist of magical energy.

Jason stepped forward, his voice firm.

Jason: "Whoever's controlling her, you've made a mistake. I don't run."

Ginny's face contorted again, her wand trembling in her grip. Jason knew she was battling internally, the real Ginny fighting against riddle. He took a calculated risk.

Jason: "Expelliarmus!"

The spell struck true. Ginny's wand flew from her hand, clattering against the stone floor. She froze, her body stiff as a board. For a moment, her eyes softened, but then she spun on her heel, speaking in a low hiss of Parseltongue.

The chamber trembled as the statue of Salazar Slytherin began to shift. Jason's heart pounded as the ground split, revealing a passage beneath the statue's feet.

Jason: [gritting his teeth] "Well, that's not ominous at all."

Before he could process the unfolding events, Ginny collapsed to the floor, her body going limp. Jason rushed to her side, checking her pulse—strong but unconscious.

The low, guttural hiss echoed through the chamber, sending a shiver down Jason's spine. His radar sense picked up a massive, sinuous shape emerging from the darkness. He looked up to see the basilisk's towering form, its emerald scales shimmering in the dim light, its deadly eyes glowing like twin orbs of malice.

Jason didn't hesitate. He pointed his wand at his own eyes.

Jason: "Occlusum Visum!"

From the shadows of the opening emerged a towering basilisk, its scales gleaming like molten emeralds, its yellow eyes glowing with lethal intent.

His vision turned to black as the spell temporarily blinded him, preventing him from meeting the basilisk's deadly gaze. The air around him seemed to thrum with the creature's presence, its movements slow but deliberate.

Jason: [gripping his wand tightly] "Alright, big guy. Let's see how you like a Ravenclaw with Ambition."

The basilisk coiled, towering over the chamber, its hiss echoing . Jason stood his ground, blind but ready. The battle was about to begin.
