Chapter 16: The Examiner (4)
Who would have thought it would come to this?
"Syverian, switch to combat mode," she commanded, her voice laced with determination.
"Combat mode activated," Syverian confirmed, its systems adjusting seamlessly.
Ahcehera guided the mecha to a central point in the terrain, her instincts screaming that something was hidden beneath the surface.
If subtlety wouldn't work, force might be the answer.
With a flick of her wrist, she primed the mecha's energy cannon. The low hum of charging power filled the cockpit.
"Brace for impact," she muttered, more to herself than Syverian.
In a deafening roar, the cannon unleashed a concentrated blast. The force rippled through the void, illuminating the darkness as it struck the ground.
For a moment, everything was still. Then the earth beneath her began to tremble, the barren terrain cracking open to reveal a hidden labyrinth of tunnels.
Syverian's sensors flared with activity. "Mistress, multiple lifeforms detected below. Energy signatures match those of the students."
Ahcehera allowed herself a small, relieved smile. "Finally."
Without hesitation, she guided Syverian into the opening, descending into the depths where the students awaited rescue.
With hundreds of tunnels sprawling out like a labyrinth, Ahcehera found herself at a crossroads.
Each opening yawned like the mouth of a great beast, dark and foreboding. The oppressive silence of the underground pressed against her ears, making every step feel heavier.
She hesitated, scanning the intricate network of paths with an uncertain gaze.
"Where do we even begin?" she murmured, her voice barely audible in the stillness.
Attempting to call for backup from the main station, Ahcehera tapped her optical brain. A few moments passed, but no response came.
The signal, strong just moments ago, was now eerily silent and unstable.
It was as if she and her team had stepped into another dimension, or perhaps something beneath the surface was deliberately blocking their connection to the outside world.
Her heart sank, but she refused to let fear take over. "Syverian," she commanded, her tone sharp and steady, "activate the sensors. I need a scan of what lies ahead in these tunnels."
The intelligent mecha hummed to life, its sensors glowing faintly as it began to analyze the surroundings.
Meanwhile, Ahcehera released a dozen flying camera bots and rover bots, watching as they buzzed and scurried into different tunnels.
The dim light from their sensors faded into the darkness as they ventured further, but there were far too many paths to cover all at once.
"Mistress," Syverian's voice broke the silence. "Initial scans reveal cocoons and eggs within every tunnel."
Ahcehera's brow furrowed as she studied the data on her optical screen. "Cocoons? Eggs? Can you identify the species?"
"The eggs match those of the Zergs, Mistress," Syverian reported, its tone devoid of emotion but weighted with significance.
A chill ran down Ahcehera's spine.
The Zergs, an apex predator of the galaxy, were creatures of nightmares, their presence in any system a harbinger of destruction. Her grip tightened around her laser gun.
"And the cocoons?" she pressed, dreading the answer.
Syverian hesitated for a moment before responding. "The cocoons contain life forms. Some appear to be beasts, but others…"
The mecha paused, its sensors recalibrating.
"Others are humans, Mistress. They are encased in a thick, viscous slime, a chemical secretion designed to preserve them while slowly draining their life force."
Ahcehera's stomach churned at the thought. Humans were trapped and harvested like livestock. She clenched her fists, forcing the bile down.
Her eyes narrowed as she studied the screen, which displayed the layout of the tunnels and their grim contents.
"Syverian, can you detect any active movement? Are there Zergs patrolling these tunnels?"
"Negative, Mistress. Scans show no immediate movement, but the eggs and cocoons suggest this is a breeding ground. It's possible the adults are out hunting."
Ahcehera's mind raced. A breeding ground meant one thing, a hive. If the Zergs returned, they would be dealing with more than just isolated threats.
This was a ticking time bomb waiting to erupt. Her team's survival and the lives of the missing students depended on swift action, but rash moves could doom them all.
Drawing a deep breath, she steeled herself.
"Syverian, continue scanning for the densest concentration of eggs. That should lead us closer to the hive core. In the meantime, alert me to any sign of movement. We can't afford to be caught off guard."
"Understood, Mistress," Syverian replied, its mechanical voice unwavering.
Ahcehera's gaze swept over her surroundings, the endless darkness illuminated only by the faint glow of her equipment.
Determination burned in her chest. She had come too far to falter now.
She muttered under her breath. "This isn't just a rescue anymore. This is war."
-
Ahcehera hesitated, her heart pounding in the oppressive silence.
The path she had taken earlier was now completely sealed, leaving her no choice but to press forward into the unknown.
"Syverian," she murmured, gripping the controls tightly, "report on the 76th entrance."
"Mistress," Syverian's deep, mechanical voice resonated in her earpiece, "the 76th tunnel contains the highest concentration of eggs."
Ahcehera's throat tightened. "Scan for the Queen Zerg. Is she present?"
"Negative, Mistress. No signs of a Queen Zerg within range."
A small wave of relief washed over her, but it was fleeting. "Can your frame navigate the tunnels without restrictions?"
"Yes, Mistress. The dimensions are sufficient for me to maneuver."
"Good. Proceed with caution," she ordered, steeling herself.
"Also, activate the central livestream using the royal family's encrypted code. I don't know if it'll reach the outside world, but if we're cut off, at least they'll see what's happening down here."
There was a momentary pause as Syverian processed the request.
"Connection successful, Mistress. The feed has been broadcasted across the interstellar network. However, it may be difficult to receive responses due to interference. I have also enabled location sharing."
Ahcehera nodded grimly. "That's all we can do for now. If anyone's watching, they'll know where we are."
She glanced around the shadowy expanse, the dim illumination of Syverian's sensors casting eerie patterns on the walls.
"Let's keep moving," she said, her voice firm despite the unease coiling in her chest. "Stay sharp. We'll scout the area first and strategize before dealing with those eggs."
"Understood, Mistress," Syverian replied.
Together, they ventured deeper into the tunnel, their presence illuminated only by the faint glow of her mecha's sensors.
The air grew colder, heavy with a metallic tang, as the sinister shadows of the Zerg's breeding ground loomed ever closer.
