Chapter 58 - The City Lord's Mansion
Someone from the Lu family curiously asked, “Has the senior from Changxian Sect not arrived yet? Is Gu Yan really going to wait like this?”
“I know about this. In fact, Gu Yan went to the City Lord’s Mansion on the first day he arrived, carrying a token. I heard that the teleportation array is inside the City Lord’s Mansion. However, he didn’t stay with the Gu family elders for long before he came out. It seems like they were made to wait. In my opinion, even with the token, Gu Yan isn’t as important as we imagined. Otherwise, he would have been invited into the City Lord’s Mansion by Lord Meng by now.”
“I agree. He’s probably just an outer disciple at most, not like Minzhu, whose future is much brighter!” said a proud Lu family disciple, swelling with confidence.
Lu Minzhu smiled slightly. Yes, it seemed that her cousin wasn’t as important or untouchable as she had imagined.
After more than half a month, the Immortal Ascension Conference entered its final stages. Sects like Beixing Sect had already stopped accepting disciples. At this point, Tianfu Academy finally began to see a surge in people. Gu Yao and Tian Feirong were both called over by Brother Zhou to help out for a while, which left Gu Yao feeling both amused and helpless. It seemed that Tianfu Academy’s status was indeed quite low; the children of prestigious families referred to Tianfu Academy as a “dumping ground.”
Although the crowd had increased, Teacher Fang was still angry every day, and his voice was the loudest in the entire venue.
With Tian Feirong around, Gu Yao pretty much knew which disciples from Yuanyang Town had joined which sects. For instance, Lu Minbai had ended up in Beixing Sect as well. However, it was well known that he was brought in by his younger sister. After all, Lu Minzhu’s current status was different, and many were willing to open the back door for her to bring an outer disciple in. It was unclear whether Lu Minbai himself was feeling resentful or happy about it.
“Gu Yu actually entered Cuiyan Valley?” Gu Yao exclaimed in surprise. He vaguely remembered the little girl from his memories. She was one of the few members of the family who had never made things difficult for his previous self. However, they didn’t have much of a bond either.
“Yes, I heard she entered through her Wood Element primary spirit root. I’ve already heard about the situation in Cuiyan Valley. After entering the valley, she’s probably being trained in the direction of cultivating spiritual herbs. But even so, it must be enough to make those arrogant people from the Gu family envious and jealous,” Tian Feirong remarked. Since Gu Yu wasn’t among those who usually boasted, he didn’t have too bad an impression of her. It was better for someone else to benefit than for that girl to miss out.
“By the way, do you remember that guy named Gu Yang? He joined a merchant guild and is working as an alchemist. He seems pretty smug about it, and it looks like the merchant guild will be training him heavily. Tch! Who believes that?”
Gu Yao laughed, “Well, at least he’s not completely without accomplishments.”
“True, I also heard that several children from outside our three families have joined some good sects. They must be so happy that their mouths are probably stretching to their ears,” Tian Feirong said, clicking his tongue.
What Gu Yao felt, however, was the struggle of these parents and children. It was like the many families and students in the Star Alliance, anxiously hoping to be accepted by top universities—like an army of thousands crossing a narrow bridge. Being admitted to one of the top schools was undoubtedly a great joy that would uplift the entire family.
A few of them were chatting behind the scenes when the chubby boy, who had been looking increasingly listless these days, made Gu Yao feel even more certain that he was the so-called “second generation” that they were looking for.
Brother Zhou walked over with large strides, waving his hand at them and saying, “Come on, Senior Fang wants to take us to broaden our horizons. Not everyone gets this kind of honor, and you guys are the first batch to join.”
Tian Feirong jumped up, curious, and asked, “Brother Zhou, where are we going?”
Brother Zhou smiled, “To the City Lord’s Mansion. I heard people from Changxian Sect are coming. Don’t you want to see them for yourselves?”
“Great! We’re going, we’re going!” Tian Feirong jumped up excitedly, always the one to jump at the chance for excitement. He wasn’t going to miss out on such a great opportunity. Then, he suddenly remembered something and turned to look at Gu Yao. After all, the token that Gu Yan had was handed over by Gu Yao. He wondered if Gu Yao would mind.
Gu Yao stood up and patted his backside, saying, “With such a great opportunity to broaden our horizons, of course, we can’t miss it. Brother Ye, don’t you think so?”
“Whatever Xiao Yao says goes,” Chi Changye said calmly, smiling.
Brother Zhou’s eyelid twitched. Ever since he found out that Chi Changye could kill a Horned Rhino with a single sword strike, he couldn’t treat this person as just Gu Yao’s attendant or a new student at the academy. With such combat power, he would even humbly admit defeat. So, these days, Zhou had been hesitant to give orders to Chi Changye. In the end, it was Brother Jiang who spoke up. Although Chi Changye’s expression was indifferent, he didn’t refuse.
The chubby boy didn’t oppose it either. So, the four of them followed Brother Zhou to stand in front of Teacher Fang. Besides Brother Jiang, there was also a female student waiting there—one they had met before. She was a small beauty who had joined the academy after Gu Yao and the others. Her name was Bai Xiu’er, and she had the best talent among them all. In Tian Feirong’s words, it was hard to understand why she chose to come to Tianfu Academy. Later, Teacher Fang gave hin a palm strike, sending him flying. He rolled several times before finally stopping, and after that, he didn’t dare speak out of turn.
The small beauty called everyone “Senior Brother,” and just as Tian Feirong was about to say something, Teacher Fang, impatient, waved his sleeve and sent a flying artifact flying out, saying, “Hurry up and get on. Don’t waste time.”
Shifang City was big, and if they traveled slowly, it would take a lot of time. For Foundation Establishment stage cultivators, there were no restrictions on flying within the city. So, Teacher Fang stood at the front of the flying artifact, and the others obediently followed behind. Before they had even gotten fully settled, the artifact shot out with a “whoosh,” and the chubby boy and Tian Feirong tumbled into a heap, both shouting in surprise.
Gu Yao was extremely fortunate. Luckily, when the flight artifact had just taken off, Brother Ye had pulled him, allowing him to stabilize and stand firm in place, unlike Tian Feirong who lost his balance and made a fool of himself. Bai Xiu’er, who happened to be standing next to Brother Jiang, swayed for a moment but was quickly steadied by Brother Jiang’s wave. Seeing the two of them tumbling and struggling to get up while shouting, Bai Xiu’er covered her mouth and giggled.
By the time Tian Feirong and the chubby boy finally managed to get up, they were too angry to speak. After all, they had suffered enough from Teacher Fang’s harshness. They could only grit their teeth and glare at his back.
Standing at the front of the flying artifact, Teacher Fang hadn’t activated the protective shield. The strong wind blew fiercely, making his hair whip about like wild snakes, his robes billowing loudly, looking wildly flamboyant.
They soon reached the area with the densest spiritual energy in the city—City Lord’s Mansion, located atop a mountain peak. After Teacher Fang introduced himself, the guards allowed them entry. Gu Yao, being sensitive, clearly felt the subtle gazes from the guards. They seemed to be thinking, “What are these people doing here, just to cause a commotion?”
Teacher Fang, obviously familiar with the place, led them through the area with confidence. He swaggered past the gathered cultivators without a care, while Brother Jiang maintained a constant smile. On the other hand, Brother Zhou appeared slightly uncomfortable. This clearly indicated that Brother Jiang’s cultivation was a level above.
Gu Yao was observing the others when he noticed a gaze lingering on him. He turned to look and saw Lu Minzhu staring at him in surprise. Gu Yao expressionlessly looked away. It seemed that, as Tian Feirong had said, Lu Minzhu’s special physique was highly valued by Beixing Sect, which was why she had been brought here. Meanwhile, Lu Minbai, who had also joined Beixing Sect, was nowhere to be seen. A quick scan showed that Gu Yu was also absent.
Tian Feirong, with his keen eyesight, had already spotted his brother and was making faces at him, but when Tian Ru noticed, she shot him a cold glare. Tian Feirong immediately became obedient, his scalp tingling.
Tian Feiyang curled his lips in a smile. He hadn’t expected his second brother to be here, but he was both surprised and pleased.
“Fang, I didn’t expect you to show up at an event like this. Aren’t you afraid the people you brought with you will develop heart demons from being humiliated? Or do they, like you, have thick skin and think highly of themselves?” After they had found their place and stopped, a sarcastic voice came from nearby, attracting the curiosity of Gu Yao and the others.
There was a group nearby, and upon seeing the Tianfu Academy group stop next to them, they all frowned, looking like they wanted to distance themselves, as if they were contagious. The mocking voice came from a middle-aged beauty who, after scanning Gu Yao and the others, clearly expressed her extreme disdain.
Teacher Fang narrowed his eyes and snapped his sleeves. “What bad luck! I didn’t expect it to be you, old witch. Go find another place to stay. I’ll tell you this: from now on, if you see anyone from their sect, stay as far away as possible! If not, just beat them up, but never let me catch wind of you getting involved with that old witch’s disciples!”
Teacher Fang was very straightforward and didn’t pay any attention to the beautiful woman. He led his students away to another area.
His voice was loud and clear, drawing strange looks from many of the cultivators. Teacher Fang didn’t care at all, muttering to himself that he had walked into the wrong place and it was just bad luck. Meanwhile, the beautiful woman and her disciples were so angry that their faces turned red. If it weren’t for the situation, they would have charged at them. They couldn’t tolerate being humiliated like this; all they could do was glare at the Tianfu Academy group with fiery eyes.
Tian Feirong and the chubby boy were both so shocked they felt their scalps tingle. They feared that as soon as they stepped out of the City Lord’s Mansion, these angry people would pounce on them. Teacher Fang clearly had no regard for women, even though the beautiful woman was in the prime of her beauty, he still called her an “old witch.” Teacher Fang’s mouth was a great way to make enemies.
Brother Jiang smiled helplessly, while Brother Zhou felt the tension too. He was certain there would be a fight before they returned to the academy. If they couldn’t win, they would end up being beaten. He already felt the pain creeping up his body.
Seeing that his juniors were confused, Brother Zhou lowered his voice to explain, “That’s a disciple of the Qianxue Sect, and Elder Gan from the same sect. Unfortunately, the Qianxue Sect shares borders with our Tianfu Academy. There has been ongoing competition for territory, and when we go out for training, the disciples of the Qianxue Sect often clash with our academy’s students. The conflict has been going on for a long time. In the future, if you run into them, just do as Teacher Fang said and try to win against them. Otherwise, just pray for the best.”
But Gu Yao felt there was more to it. Although Teacher Fang had a sharp tongue, he didn’t seem entirely malicious. His attitude toward Elder Gan was clearly one of cold indifference. Perhaps it was just not the right occasion, but Gu Yao felt that Brother Zhou had only told part of the story, and that some of the truth was being concealed.
