Chapter 11: Betrayals
Black Shadow Foundation, Hidden Headquarters
In the dimly lit chamber of the Black Shadow Foundation, an air of menace hung heavy. Liu Weilong sat on his ornate, high-backed chair, his sharp gaze piercing through the room. Before him knelt Xiong Gong, his arm bloodied and trembling as he cradled it in shame. The faint glow of lanterns flickered across Liu Weilong's face, emphasizing the fury in his eyes.
"You dare bring this disgrace to my house!" Liu Weilong's voice thundered, reverberating off the stone walls. His fists slammed onto the table, sending an inkpot toppling over. "How long have you known about this... relationship between my daughter and Zhong Xinling?"
Xiong Gong's head bowed lower, his voice quivering. "My Lord, I only discovered it recently. I confronted him, but he escaped. I failed you."
"Fool!" Liu Weilong spat, rising to his feet. "This is not merely a betrayal—it's a threat to everything I've built. Your incompetence has endangered the foundation."
The tension in the room was palpable. Liu Weilong turned to the gathered assassins, his voice cold and calculating. "From this moment forward, Liu Xiatian is a traitor to the Black Shadow Foundation. She has defied my authority and sullied our name. I want her eliminated—by any means necessary. Zhong Xinling's reckoning will come, but for now, my daughter must pay for her defiance."
The assassins exchanged uneasy glances, the gravity of the order sinking in. One by one, they nodded, accepting the mission.
Inner Chambers of the Black Shadow Foundation
Far within the labyrinthine corridors of the foundation, Liu Xiatian ran, her breaths shallow and rapid. The satchel slung over her shoulder contained her meager belongings, but it felt unbearably heavy as she darted through the dimly lit halls. She knew the penalty for betrayal; death was the only outcome if she was caught.
"Xiatian!" a hushed voice called out. She turned to see her mentor, Guan Dong Yu, standing at the entrance of a hidden passage. His face, usually stern, softened with urgency.
"This way," he whispered, beckoning her to follow.
Without hesitation, she slipped into the passage, the walls closing in as they moved swiftly. After a tense journey, they emerged into the dense forest surrounding the foundation. Guan Dong Yu handed her a heavy cloak, his expression a mixture of resolve and sorrow.
"Master," Liu Xiatian began, her voice trembling, "why are you helping me? You risk everything for this."
Guan Dong Yu placed a hand on her shoulder. "Because I raised you as my own. I won't let Liu Weilong's ambition destroy you. But you must go now and stay hidden. They will hunt you without mercy."
Tears streamed down Liu Xiatian's face as she bowed deeply. "Thank you, Master. I will never forget this."
As she disappeared into the shadows of the forest, Guan Dong Yu turned back toward the foundation, his jaw clenched. He knew the price of his actions, but he refused to regret them.
The Northern Kingdom's Royal Palace
In the grand yet ominous study of the Northern Kingdom's palace, Prince Zhou Hong sat at his ornate desk, penning a letter. The flickering candlelight cast long shadows on the walls, mirroring the dark intentions behind his carefully chosen words.
"To my dearest Yue," he wrote, his quill gliding across the parchment with precision. "The time has come for us to act. Your influence within the royal court is critical. I trust you will know how to sow the seeds of discord between the kingdoms. Together, we shall achieve what others only dream of."
He folded the letter neatly and sealed it with his personal insignia, a mark known only to his closest allies. Handing it to a trusted messenger, he gave strict instructions.
"Deliver this to Consort Shang Yue immediately," Zhou Hong commanded. "No one must see it."
The messenger bowed and departed swiftly. Alone once more, Zhou Hong leaned back in his chair, a sly smile curling his lips. "Soon," he murmured to himself, "both kingdoms will kneel before me."
Daling City
The bustling streets of Daling City were alive with the hum of traders, the clatter of hooves, and the distant melodies of street performers. The towering walls of the city loomed overhead, a testament to its strength and history. Deng Min Chi and his companions entered through the gates, their weary faces betraying the trials of their journey.
As they navigated through the crowded square, a sudden commotion caught their attention. A figure pushed through the throng of people and stopped abruptly in front of them.
"Xinling!" the woman cried out, throwing herself into Zhong Xinling's arms.
The group froze, stunned by the unexpected reunion. Lin Bai Yu's expression hardened, her hands tightening around her sword hilt as she averted her gaze.
Zhong Xinling instinctively held Liu Xiatian, though his eyes darted nervously toward his companions. He could feel Lin Bai Yu's piercing silence, her pain unspoken but palpable.
"Who is she?" Lin Xuxu asked, her voice a mixture of curiosity and caution.
"She's... someone I know," Zhong Xinling replied, his usual composure faltering under the weight of the moment.
Lin Bai Yu turned away, her face a mask of indifference, though her clenched fists told a different story.
The City's Royal Residence
Later that day, the group arrived at the royal residence of Daling City. The grand hall was adorned with intricate carvings and rich tapestries, a testament to the city's regal heritage. Prince Zhou Sheng and Princess Zhou Xiaolu awaited them, their faces lighting up at the sight of Deng Min Chi.
"Min Chi!" Zhou Sheng greeted warmly, embracing his cousin. "It's been far too long."
Deng Min Chi returned the embrace, introducing his companions one by one. When Zhou Sheng's gaze landed on Lin Bai Yu, his demeanor shifted slightly, his expression a mixture of surprise and intrigue.
"Lady Lin Bai Yu," Zhou Sheng said, bowing slightly. "It's an honor to see you here."
Lin Bai Yu tilted her head, her eyes narrowing. "You know me, Your Highness?"
Zhou Sheng hesitated, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Yes, I've heard of you through... certain channels. Your reputation precedes you."
His cryptic words hung in the air, leaving the group curious. Sensing the unease, Zhou Sheng quickly shifted the conversation to their mission.
As the group settled in, the tension between them lingered. Daling City had welcomed them, but it was clear that beneath its bustling exterior lay secrets and alliances that would soon come to light.
