Chapter 12: Why does everything has to be so complicated?
In another part of the palace
Noble Consort Lu Bai Yu visited Empress Dong Sha.
"It's been years, and yet, this palace still feels like a second home," Noble Consort Lu remarked, sipping her tea.
Empress Dong Sha smiled. "And you've always been like a sister to me. Tell me, how did you win His Majesty's heart?"
Lu Bai Yu chuckled softly. "It wasn't easy. He was distant at first, but persistence won him over. What about you? The Emperor often speaks of your strength and wisdom."
The two women shared a moment of camaraderie, reminiscing about their early days in the palace.
Quiet Corner of the Inn
Under the moonlit sky, Zhong Xinling sat by a quiet corner of the inn, staring into the distance. Liu Xiatian approached him cautiously.
"Xinling," she began, her voice trembling. "I owe you an explanation."
He turned to her, his expression unreadable.
"My father... he found out about us. He ordered my death. Master Guan Dong Yu helped me escape, but now I'm a fugitive," Liu Xiatian admitted, her voice breaking.
Zhong Xinling clenched his fists. "I'll protect you, Xiatian. No one will harm you while I'm here."
"But Xinling," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Your mission... it's tied to my family. How can we ever be free of this?"
For the first time, Zhong Xinling looked unsure, caught between his duty and his love.
Room in Inn
Zhong Xinling stood alone in the dimly lit room, his thoughts clouded with the weight of the danger that loomed over him. The Black Shadow Foundation, an organization he had once been loyal to, had turned against him. They knew of his relationship with Liu Xiatian, and now they sought his life. The reality of his situation was becoming clearer with each passing moment: he couldn't escape the organization, and he couldn't remain in the kingdom. His next steps had to be careful, calculated.
He couldn't allow anyone to know just how dangerous his position had become. Especially Liu Xiatian. He couldn't let her worry, not when he was already planning his next move.
Hunting Ground, Forest
The next morning, Zhou Sheng, the Third Prince of the Northern Kingdom, walked through the royal gardens with a heavy heart. He had been thinking about Lin Bai Yu since their last encounter, when he discovered her true identity. She wasn't just a noblewoman—she was Princess Jia Yi Chan, the woman once promised to him in a political marriage alliance.
With that knowledge in mind, he sought her out, hoping for a conversation that would give him clarity. As he found her standing by a fountain, he approached, his expression serious.
Zhou Sheng: "Lin Bai Yu… or should I say, Princess Jia Yi Chan?"
Lin Bai Yu turned to face him, startled by his words. She had always kept her identity hidden, but now it seemed that the truth was out.
Lin Bai Yu: "I never expected you to recognize me. But yes, it's true. I am Princess Jia Yi Chan, though I have not gone by that name in many years."
Zhou Sheng paused for a moment, his gaze steady as he took in her words.
Zhou Sheng: "It seems that our past was more complicated than I realized. We were once betrothed, you know."
Lin Bai Yu flinched at the mention of their engagement. It had been a marriage alliance arranged by their families, one she had long since rejected.
Lin Bai Yu (shaking her head): "I rejected that marriage long ago. My life was never meant to be bound by that alliance, Zhou Sheng. I chose my own path, and I will not go back."
Zhou Sheng's expression hardened, but there was a hint of sadness in his eyes. He had hoped for a different outcome, but it seemed the past was too far gone to reclaim.
Zhou Sheng: "I understand. But I can't ignore the fact that our paths have crossed again, and there are still ties between us."
Lin Bai Yu met his gaze, her heart heavy with the weight of their shared history.
Lin Bai Yu: "Those ties may be there, but I won't let them define my future."
With that, she turned away, leaving Zhou Sheng standing in the garden, uncertain of what the future held for both of them.
Palace of Northern Kingdom
Prince Zhou Hong and his wife, Consort Wang Xuxu, were embroiled in yet another bitter argument. Their marriage had always been fraught with tension, but today, it reached a boiling point. The constant strain of their relationship had become unbearable.
Consort Wang Xuxu: "You never listen, Zhou Hong! You never cared for me, not even when we were first married!"
Prince Zhou Hong: "You don't understand, Wang Xuxu! I was forced into this marriage. I never had a choice!"
Consort Wang Xuxu: "Then why are we still pretending? Why are we still stuck in this miserable existence?"
The words were like daggers to Prince Zhou Hong's heart. He had never truly loved his wife; his heart had always belonged to Consort Shang Yue. But he could never bring himself to tell Wang Xuxu the truth.
Prince Zhou Hong (coldly): "Enough. We've been through this too many times. There's nothing left to say."
As the tension between them grew, their daughter, Zhou Qian, watched from a distance. She had grown tired of hearing her parents' constant fighting. The atmosphere in the palace had become unbearable, and the emotional strain was starting to affect her more than she could handle.
Zhou Qian (to herself): Why can't they just be happy? Why does everything have to be so complicated?
The princess's heart ached as she realized that her family's troubles might never end. She longed for peace, but it seemed like the kingdom's internal conflicts were far from over.
As the day came to a close, the events of the morning weighed heavily on everyone. For Zhong Xinling, the threat of the Black Shadow Foundation's pursuit loomed large. For Zhou Sheng, the memory of Lin Bai Yu's rejection lingered. And for Prince Zhou Hong and Consort Wang Xuxu, the cracks in their marriage continued to widen. The lives of these individuals were becoming more entwined than they realized, and the future held uncertainty for all of them.
To be continue....
