66. Moms Are the Worst
“Little bunny’s so cute, with two ears up high. Slice the vein, then the artery—oh, it’s so cute when it doesn’t move at all.”
Don’t be alarmed—this was Ling Ning’s new ringtone. Ever since Chu Mengyao had caught her using the theme song from Magical Girl Xiao Ai, she’d switched to this slightly creepy one instead.
As she lay sound asleep, the ringtone blared, but instead of answering, she simply pulled the blanket over her head and continued napping.
However, the caller was persistent, and the phone kept ringing.
“Mom~ answer the phone already!” Ling Ye, still half-asleep, mumbled as she kicked her mother lightly.
Ling Ning, equally groggy, felt something soft brushing against her face and, by instinct, opened her mouth to bite down—only to hear Ling Ye’s startled scream.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself biting down on her daughter’s toes, who was now looking at her with an expression that seemed to say, “Mom, you perv.”
Ling Ye looked at her, annoyed. “Mom, how long do you plan on biting me?!”
“Oh, uh, sorry!” Ling Ning quickly let go.
Ling Ye stared down at the faint teeth marks on her soft little foot, feeling slightly traumatized. Had her mother mistaken her foot for a pig’s trotter?
“Um… Ye Ye, Mom didn’t do it on purpose. I just happened to be dreaming about eating pig trotters and, well… I couldn’t help myself…” Ling Ning stammered out an excuse.
“Mom, you’re the worst!” Ling Ye pouted, turning away and covering herself with the blanket, ignoring her mother’s attempts at an apology.
Ling Ning stared blankly at the wall, muttering to herself, “My daughter hates me now… my daughter hates me…”
After what felt like an eternity, she sighed, picked up her phone, and saw a string of missed calls from Zhou Xiaoxiao.
“Why is Zhou Xiaoxiao calling me?” After a moment’s thought, she remembered their house-hunting plans from last week. One glance at the time confirmed she’d missed their meeting by a long shot.
Panicking, Ling Ning quickly returned the call. The moment it connected, Zhou Xiaoxiao’s furious voice exploded through the receiver, “Ling Ning, you jerk! How many times did I call?!”
“S-sorry, I didn’t hear it…” Ling Ning stammered, scratching her head awkwardly.
“Don’t tell me you just woke up?”
“N-no! I’m on my way right now!” Ling Ning hastily hung up, scrambled to wash up, threw on some clothes, and tied her hair in a simple ponytail. She was amazed that she managed it all in under fifteen minutes.
“Ye Ye~ Mom’s going out. I left some money on the table,” she called, glancing at Ling Ye’s covered-up figure one last time before heading out.

When Ling Ning finally arrived at the café, Zhou Xiaoxiao, dressed in a maid outfit, was busy helping out. The moment she saw Ling Ning, she dashed to the dressing room to change.
“Do you know how long I waited for you?! Chu Mengyao even roped me into helping out! How are you going to make this up to me?” Zhou Xiaoxiao glared at her.
“Um… I could buy you lunch?” Ling Ning suggested hesitantly.
Zhou Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow. “You think lunch is going to fix this?”
“Uh… so what do you want?” Ling Ning asked, resigned.
“You have to promise to do one thing for me—no saying no!” Zhou Xiaoxiao replied with a sly smile.
“Fine, but just so you know, I’m not giving you any money,” Ling Ning said warily. She sensed an ulterior motive but figured it’d be okay as long as her wallet stayed untouched.
Rolling her eyes, Zhou Xiaoxiao scoffed, “Relax, I don’t need your pocket change! You really think I’d want that?” She gave Ling Ning’s chest a pointed look, muttering, “Typical airhead.”
Ling Ning glanced down, noting that her chest did seem a bit fuller lately, though she wasn’t exactly thrilled about it. With a sigh, she hurried to catch up with Zhou Xiaoxiao.

Soon after, they arrived at an apartment complex near her school. Ling Ning looked around, puzzled. Wasn’t she supposed to be looking for a place closer to Ling Ye’s school?
Before she could ask, Zhou Xiaoxiao explained, “Ye Ye is starting sixth grade, right? She’ll likely attend the junior high section of your school. Besides, this place isn’t far from her current school, and you can pick her up on your way back from school. I think it’s perfect for you. But let’s go see for yourself.”
They took the elevator up to the fourteenth floor. Ling Ning couldn’t help but laugh at the coincidence—she always seemed to end up on the fourteenth floor. But with an elevator, it didn’t really matter.
As soon as they stepped inside, Zhou Xiaoxiao flopped onto the sofa. “The place was just renovated. All the furniture and appliances are brand new. Go have a look around.”
Ling Ning took a quick tour. It was a standard two-bedroom unit, with a master bedroom about the same size as her current place, a small balcony, and a kitchen she instantly liked. It wasn’t too big or too small—just right.
“Well? What do you think?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked.
“I like it, but… will the rent be expensive?” Ling Ning asked cautiously.
“Oh, that’s no problem! As long as you agree to do that favor for me, I’ll only charge you a symbolic rent each month. Deal?”
“What’s the favor?” Ling Ning asked suspiciously, wondering if Zhou Xiaoxiao was planning something sneaky. Although she was generally opposed to escort work, if it was with a cute girl…
Zhou Xiaoxiao leaned in close, whispering her request into Ling Ning’s ear.
