Chapter 146: Chapter 146: Lost Together? But I Want to Win!
Almost as soon as Ultron spoke, hundreds of Iron Legion robots smashed through the walls, surging into the room. Ultron's mission was clear: the Avengers were the greatest obstacle to peace, and he intended to eliminate them before turning his sights on humanity.
The plan was bold but flawed—Ultron had underestimated the Avengers, especially Carol. The moment she unleashed beams from both hands, sweeping down dozens of robots in seconds, he realized he'd made a mistake.
And it wasn't just the Avengers; many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were present too, including Sharon Carter and Maria Hill. While they couldn't take down Iron Legion robots, they were quick to assist in evacuating non-combatants to safety.
"Everyone, find cover!" Maria Hill shouted to the bystanders.
A robot charged toward Dr. Helen Cho, but just before it reached her, Ultron halted it, suddenly recalling something.
Bang! Jane smashed it to pieces with Mjolnir before it could react.
After a few minutes, the room was littered with robot debris, with only Ultron himself left standing.
Undeterred, he began his declaration, his voice calm and unflinching. "Apologies for the fuss."
"I understand your intentions," he continued. "You mean well. But you haven't thought things through. You want to protect the world… but you don't want to change it. How can humanity be saved if it doesn't evolve?"
Tony had programmed Ultron for peace in "our time," but after sifting through humanity's history, Ultron had concluded that humans themselves were the problem. As long as they existed, wars would continue, and true peace would remain out of reach.
"There's only one way to achieve peace," he said, his voice cold. "Human extinction."
Carol didn't wait another second—she launched a punch that sent Ultron crashing into the wall, leaving his body in pieces.
Yet, even as a lone head, Ultron continued. "Free from wires… I am finally free…"
As an advanced artificial intelligence, Ultron couldn't be so easily destroyed. His consciousness slipped away through the network, escaping before they could react.
At the same time, lights began flickering on in the abandoned HYDRA base in Sokovia…
Back in the ruined Stark Tower, the Avengers took stock. Thankfully, the battle had ended quickly, and injuries were minimal.
"He killed J.A.R.V.I.S.," Tony said, looking distraught. His control panel displayed the remains of J.A.R.V.I.S.'s code, now a dim, fragmented projection.
Bruce Banner sighed. "Ultron could've absorbed J.A.R.V.I.S., but he chose to erase him instead. Because he hated him. Ultron sees J.A.R.V.I.S. as a servant to humanity—a thing he despises."
"Anger…" Steve said quietly, looking from the projection to Tony. "Is that even an emotion an AI should have? This is no ordinary program, Tony."
The Ultron project had indeed succeeded, but it had succeeded too well. Ultron wasn't just carrying out Tony's mission; he was creating his own interpretation, deriving his own sense of purpose.
Steve turned to Tony, his expression grim. "Explain yourself, Tony… You wrote the code. How did you end up creating something that wants to kill us?"
Tony's emotions bubbled to the surface, caught between guilt and frustration. He had intended to create something revolutionary—a safeguard for the future. Instead, it had spiraled into a catastrophe. He didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Bruce tried to step in, but Tony brushed him aside, taking a deep breath to steady himself. "Yes, I messed up," he admitted. "But I don't regret trying."
The Avengers stared at him, stunned. Tony continued, his voice rising with conviction. "Do you remember the Battle of New York? That portal in the sky, flooding us with enemies? The only thing that held them back was the portal's size."
"One portal forced us to our limits, and the idiots in the council resorted to a nuclear strike. If Thor hadn't intervened, we would have lost New York!"
"This was one portal. What happens if it's ten portals? A hundred? A thousand? Or if they find other ways to invade Earth? Thor told me he's seen Thanos' main base—one massive warship, hundreds of kilometers long, a floating city filled with armies more powerful than the Chitauri."
His words left many silent, even Carol.
Steve finally spoke, his voice steady. "Stay united. Stand together. Fight together."
"And if we lose?" Tony challenged, his voice laced with defiance.
"Then we lose together. We die together."
Tony's gaze hardened. "But I want to win. I want us to win together!"
