Chapter 16: Day one
Luisa laid on the bed that looked like one of those beds in the infirmary for emergency patients. Four of them laid on those type of bed, they were in a lab like room for the mages as they were about to undergo the trial of the grasses.
The four of them wore the infirmary gowns for the test subjects, present in the room were Nuka, Zeke, the red haired witcher whose name was Garvinton Ferrell, some senior and junior mages.
"Strap the test subjects," one of the senior mages began.
Luisa's hands and feet were strapped with leather against the bed, so were the others.
"Put a bidding spell on the elf and vampire, we don't want the stronger beings tearing this place apart," another senior mage pointed out.
One of the junior mages came towards Luisa, his gaze lingered longer on her than usual. She has seen him just twice and they have talked casually just once in one of those two times, he was a human in his early twenties who had just finished the training for mages.
He was tall, a little lean in stature, blonde hair, blue eyes with a pretty face and his name was Carter Arthur.
He has always admired Luisa from the first time he set his eyes on her, she was like a lamb in the midst of wolves, he admires her braveness.
Today the junior mages were privileged to be present in the trial of the grasses of these future witchers, he also being among them. He started muttering the bidding spell.
Done, he moved away from her. Luisa didn't feel the strap get tighter but she knew she wouldn't be able to break free from the strap if she tried to because of the bidding spell.
Zeke moved closer to Luisa, his sharp gaze on her and she stared back at him trying so hard to hide her anxiety. He leaned towards her and whispered to her ears;
"It's going to hurt"
She swallowed and gave him a small nod. She felt him squeeze her fingers a little and she held him back.
"We are going to need some room," one of the mages stated in order to move the witchers out of the room.
The three witchers troop out of the room. The room was locked and the witchers watched from the other side as it was made of a glass wall.
"Drink this," Carter said to Luisa giving her a glass which contained a green liquid substance.
The same was also given to Gideon and the other boys, it was bitter in taste. After that, a syringe containing another substance was injected into their bodies through their hands. Not only Luisa but also the others felt like a parasite was walking in their bodies through their veins and when it got to their hearts that was when the real pain started.
Luisa started to fidget on the bed in discomfort, the veins in her body from head to toe began to erect as if they were going to pop out.
"Day one of the trial No. 1025Kw. The test subjects appears to be disoriented," started one of the mages that was among those who were in charge of the observation record keeping department.
"That's normal," one of the record keeping mages added.
"Full transformation takes place at exactly after forty eight hours, test subjects will be kept under full surveillance. From past experiments, test subjects who are unable to transform eventually die of heart corruption," the mages continued.
Luisa squeezed and struggled, she felt like her internal system was being shattered into a million pieces, as if a thousand scorpions were biting and tearing her apart, the pain was too much.
As she had assumed earlier she was unable to break free from the binds, she sucked for air as all of a sudden her lungs felt deprived of it, she gnashed her teeth as she felt herself zooming in and out of consciousness until she finally gave in to the darkness.
...
"Luisa...Luisa...Luisa?!" a voice echoed in the darkness. Luisa's eyes opened slowly, her gaze on the not so high ceilings unlike in Zeke's room or his house.
The ceilings were made of wood and it all of a sudden looked familiar. The voice called again, it was also familiar, it belonged to her mother.
Luisa sat up immediately, was this another dream or was it the illusion? It was said that at some certain point of the trial, the recruits will start to live in a little calm illusion their minds creates for them to relive the best parts of their lives or the part of life they wished they had had.
Some forget about the pain and the trial and even the part of them that was a recruit in kimoira only to be woken up by the awful reality, more like a calmness before the storm.
Nevertheless, she opened the door of her room in their house. She found her mother in their open kitchen, cooking. Her father sat on their small dining table close to the kitchen drinking green tea.
A young elf girl sat on the floor playing with her dolls, some made from twigs, some wood while few were actual dolls, with the appearance she appeared to be Luisa's little sister.
A little boy, a little older than the girl sat close to her father, a bored and hungry expression on his face as he waited for the food to be ready. He must be her brother, Luisa couldn't help but smile. This was totally an illusion but she didn't want to get out of it.
Her mother turned to her, "There you are," She said to Luisa, her usual cheerful smile on her lips and it turned into worry. She moved closer to Luisa and held her cheeks examining her. Her touch felt so real, she felt her mother's touch again.
"Luisa dear, are you okay? You look so pale and you've been sleeping since morning after returning from the woods with your friends," her mother asked so concerned.
Friends?
He smiled at her mother, tears in her eyes as she embraced her tightly at once.
"Oh..." her mother responded as she hugged her daughter back.
Luisa let go of her and went to opened the window wider. It was almost dusk, the sky had a twilight hue and her little clan was as lively as ever, she breathe in the fresh air savouring the moment.
"What's with her?" the elf boy that appeared to be her little brother questioned.
"Lui- Urgh!" an elf girl about her age was about to call her when a woman interrupted her by handing a big sack of load to her.
She recognized them, it was her childhood friend Leonora and her unusually by wood elf nature, short busty mother, the girl looked nothing like her mother, she looked more like her father but was almost short like her mother.
"Sorry, lu. Gotta run...I have been so busy since noon helping my sweet mother with these loads, I would have stopped by but..." the girl trailed off.
"It's okay Leonora," Luisa smiled at the girl.
"Okay, see you tomorrow then," the girl added.
"Okay," Luisa replied to the girl.
"Goodbye, Luisa, greet your mother for me," the woman requested and Luisa bid them goodbye.
Lu, that was the nickname Leonora always called her. She was killed as well. Luisa bit her lower lips, this was the life she was suppose to live but the vampires took it away from her. She knew it was an illusion but deep down she wished it wasn't. She was going to savour every moment of this opportunity.
She turned to her family who were a little flabbergasted by her actions. Luisa rushed to her father and squatted besides him, she held his arm and stared at those lovely amber eyes one more time. She only had her father's hair color but most of her features were from her mother.
"You are real, right?" she asked.
"You are all real, right?" she tried so hard to convince herself.
Her father held her back, "Luisa Multon, daughter of Erik, my daughter. Of course I'm real, are you okay?" her father responded and Luisa started to chuckle.
"Aurora, I think you're right. First thing tomorrow morning Luisa has to see the village shaman," her father added. Luisa had almost forgotten her father's sense of humor there.
"Agreed," her little brother seconded and the house was filled with laughter.
"It's okay, I'm fine," Luisa said taking a seat.
"Are you sure?" Her mother asked and she nodded.
They finished having supper together and were about to retire to bed.
"I want to sleep close to Luisa tonight," Luisa's assumed little sister told, clinging unto Luisa.
"Why honey?" her mother asked.
"Elvin's room's too scary and he always tells me horrifying bed time stories," the little girl complained and Luisa's mother shot her son a glare.
"(Laughs nervously)...What're we talking about?" he said and dashed towards his room.
"Okay, honey. Why don't you come sleep with papa and mama tonight, huh? What do you say?" their mother inquired and the little girl shook her head clinging to Luisa even more.
"Papa always snores loudly, like this (Mimics their father's method of snoring in an over exaggerated childish manner)" the little girl responded.
"Huh? I don't snore like that," their father defended himself making Luisa and her mother to laugh.
"Honey, Luisa's so tired today-"
"It's okay, she can sleep close to me tonight" Luisa cuts in politely.
"Are you sure, don't forget she's a handful?" Her mother pointed out.
"It's really fine," Luisa replied.
"Alright then, get to bed you two." their mother responded and they all retired to bed.
In Luisa's small room, the little elf girl just lied there cuddling Luisa with her small hands.
"Are you sure you don't want me to tell you a bed time story?" Luisa asked.
"Nope, cuddling you like this is enough to get me to sleep. Hmmm, I really love to sleep besides you," the girl mumbled sleepily and she finally dozed off.
Luisa smiled, her family was always so lively even when they were just three. Sometimes she wondered how it was going to be with a house full, she has always wanted siblings, extra two didn't disappoint her assumptions at all.
This was all she ever wanted. She was too afraid to sleep, she was afraid to lose this little ecstasy world if she shuts her eyes and so she remained like that staring and smiling at her sister as she fought a sudden fatigue that started to overpower her.
