Chapter 18: 18. Confronting the Alpha.
Aaron placed the bait at the center of a clearing and motioned for the girls to retreat to a nearby ridge. Glimmer stayed by his side, and her ears were perked up as she listened attentively for any signs of movement, but she didn't hear anything.
Minutes passed, and the forest was now slowly turning dark, but the forest remained silent. It felt like the beasts were close by but were watching closely from a distance to figure out why a huge pile of raw meat was just sitting in the clearing with no one eating it yet.
However, after a few minutes, the first Hell Wolf emerged from the forest to grab a bite of the raw meat, but it wasn't the only one, because four other wolves emerged from the bushes as well.
Now, there were five demonic beasts surrounding the bait, their crimson eyes glowing with malice.
"Now," Aaron whispered, and Diana moved first.
Her blade sliced through the neck of the nearest beast, and Aaron followed from behind as his sword cut through the flank of another beast.
Glimmer darted forward and distracted the third beast while Aurora cast a small blinding spell that disoriented the other beasts.
The battle was fast but brutal, and by the time the last beast fell, Aaron's arms ached and his breathing was choppy.
"That's the last of them," Diana noted as she cleaned her blade.
"We have to keep moving; there's bound to be a few other groups that are hunting together," Aaron said and everyone followed as Glimmer led the way.
While they walked through the farmlands in the darkness, they faced a few Hell Wolves and other kinds of demonic beasts, but Aaron and the girls had also noticed something about the demonic beasts.
Based on their observations so far, the Hell Wolves had an alpha that commanded most of the smaller Hell Wolves.
The smaller ones had divided themselves into groups of four or five to hunt at night.
Strangely enough, they noticed that the Hell Wolves were the ones that dominated the farmlands, but even though there were a few other demonic beasts within their surroundings, none of them were as strong or as large as the Alpha.
Aaron and the girls continued to move through the farmlands, with Aurora casting a small light orb that illuminated their way as they trailed behind Glimmer.
Glimmer helped in locating where the different groups of demonic beasts were, and she made it easier for Aaron and the girls to properly sneak past any beasts they encountered.
They continued to slay any beast in their path, but after some time of non-stop battle against the demonic beasts, Aaron and the girls decided to take a short break.
Once they were well rested, they decided to go towards the barn, and the moment they arrived, they could hear the growls of the Alpha echoing in the distance.
"We need to make sure there won't be any other wolves within the area if the alpha decides to call for help," Aaron said before turning toward his little fox. "Glimmer, can you inspect the areas around the barn to make sure that there are no other wolves around?"
Glimmer let out a small bark, and her golden eyes glowed faintly as she began to scan the area while sending her holograms in different directions to cover more ground.
Moments later, Glimmer trotted towards a collapsed fence before pausing to look back at Aaron. It had spotted the scent of a few wolves nearby and needed permission to locate exactly where the wolves were.
"Go," Aaron ordered, and Glimmer traced the wolves she had spotted.
The wolves were three in number, and they were scattered around that particular spot, but their movements seemed sluggish compared to all the other ones from earlier.
Aaron and the girls easily dispatched them one by one, and Aaron could see that their teamwork was slowly growing smoother with each encounter they faced.
Aurora's quick spellcasting helped to keep the beasts off balance, while Diana's experience and Aaron's ability to adapt very quickly helped them to easily slay the countless beasts they had fought against.
In a matter of minutes, the last beast was slain; however, Aaron and the girls noticed how silent the barn had become.
The Alpha's growl could no longer be heard, and that could only mean one thing.
"It knows we're here," Diana whispered, and Aurora nodded in agreement.
Aaron nodded as well, but he tightened his grip on his sword before whispering loud enough for the girls to hear. "Stay still and don't move."
The girls did as they were told, and even Glimmer remained still as everyone tried to listen for any sound of footsteps in the dark, but the barn remained as silent as a graveyard, making it difficult for them to pinpoint exactly where the Alpha was.
Of course, Glimmer and Aaron's holograms scanned around the area, but even they couldn't detect where the alpha was.
Regardless of this, Aaron and the girls remained still. Eventually, when the Alpha was tired of remaining hidden, it burst out from the barn with a roar. Its eyes were brighter than all the other Hell Wolves they had faced, and it was faster as well.
"Stick to the plan!!!" Aaron instructed, and Glimmer darted forward to the alpha. Her shimmering fur pulled the Alpha's attention towards her, and it swiped at her but missed Glimmer by a few inches before turning its attention towards Aaron.
"Over here!!" Aaron yelled while raising his sword, but the Alpha charged at him instantly, and Aaron was barely able to dodge it at the last second before slashing the Alpha's side. The blade barely scratched its thick fur, but the Alpha roared in pain.
Meanwhile, Diana jumped in and aimed her blade at a weak spot of the Alpha near its shoulder. It let out a pained roar once again and spun around to swipe at Diana. She quickly moved to dodge its attack.
However, the force of the Alpha's attack was great, and it sent Diana sprawling to the ground.
Meanwhile, Aurora cast a blinding spell, and Aaron used the opening to aim at the same weak spot of the alpha.
