Chapter 74: Chapter 74: From the Future
Under the bright moonlight, Kirito, with his back to the moon, held an icy blue ice blade, smiling as he pressed it against Sasuke's neck.
"I won."
Crack-crack-crack! Just as the words fell, a purple skeletal hand suddenly extended from Sasuke's side and reached for Kirito.
Kirito dodged nimbly, but purple ribs emerged from the air, firmly shielding Sasuke.
Purple flames enveloped the ribs, and in an instant, they transformed into a half-length warrior. The warrior raised a massive purple bow and aimed at Kirito, who was mid-air.
Whoosh! A giant arrow wrapped in black flames shot straight through Kirito's chest without resistance and lodged into the woods behind him, causing a violent explosion.
Kirito, who had turned into an ice sculpture, fell to the ground and shattered into burning shards of ice.
Huff, huff, huff...
First, the use of Rinnegan powers, then Susanoo—Sasuke had expended most of his remaining chakra. Looking at the scattered ice shards, he couldn't believe Kirito was defeated so easily.
Click! Sasuke suddenly lowered his head as a cold white palm passed directly above it. Turning around, Sasuke saw Kirito standing behind him like an ice sculpture, white ice crystals continuously condensing on his body.
Just as Sasuke prepared to put some distance between them, Kirito suddenly kicked him in the chest.
"Ugh!" Sasuke flew backward, smashing through his Susanoo, and landed heavily on the grass, carving out a deep pit.
Kirito's unguarded kick was so powerful that two or three of Sasuke's ribs broke. He lay on the ground, panting heavily and unable to stand due to the serious injury.
"Let's talk better this time," Kirito said, walking unscathed through the dissipating Susanoo toward Sasuke lying in the pit.
"..."
Sasuke continuously used simple medical ninjutsu to heal himself, ready to counterattack at any moment. However, as a medical ninja, Kirito wouldn't let him heal so easily. The chakra laced in Kirito's kick was constantly eroding Sasuke's wound.
This left Sasuke in a bind. If he didn't maintain the treatment, the wound would cause excruciating pain. If he concentrated on healing, he couldn't defend against Kirito's attacks.
"I think you misunderstood me," Kirito said calmly. "I really just want to talk. Are you Sasuke Uchiha?"
Seeing Sasuke's wary expression, Kirito continued, "I used to be Sasuke's companion, so I could naturally sense Sasuke's chakra. Even though you've changed a lot, the essence of your chakra hasn't. That's how I recognized you."
He added, "You know, the village and Naruto are obsessively searching for information about Sasuke. If I were to disclose your location to them, what do you think would happen?"
"What do you want?" Sasuke finally replied, his expression tense at the mention of Naruto.
[As expected, Naruto is still the key,] Kirito thought.
Of course, Kirito's earlier statements were a fabrication. He had deduced Sasuke's identity based on the original story. But such things are hard to explain, so he attributed it to the all-encompassing power of chakra.
Seeing Sasuke willing to engage in conversation, Kirito asked, "As I said, you're Sasuke, but not the same Sasuke. I want to know what's going on. And also, that boy who looks so much like Naruto—what's his origin?"
This time, Sasuke didn't attack again. His injuries required attention, and he had also confirmed that Kirito's strength was at least on par with Urashiki's.
From Naruto's reports, Sasuke knew Kirito had at least three bloodline limits. However, in this battle, Kirito had only used ice release techniques and taijutsu.
In their fight, Sasuke felt Kirito's sincerity. Cautiously, he decided to trust the peculiar Ōtsutsuki in front of him.
Instead of answering Kirito's question directly, Sasuke asked, "Why are you here?"
Kirito sighed. "Even if you ask me, I don't have a proper explanation. I've been in the village since I was a baby. I was adopted by the Hyuga Clan's orphanage but later left to avoid the Caged Bird Seal. I studied at the ninja academy, joined Team Guy, and became a regular ninja of Konoha Village."
"I know I look different, but once you get to know me, you'll find I'm quite easygoing."
Sasuke scrutinized Kirito's expression and words, cross-referencing them with what he knew. Finding nothing suspicious, he said, "There was once a clan that traveled through worlds, harvesting life and destroying everything. They were called the Ōtsutsuki. You look exactly like them—a member of their clan."
Kirito nodded. "I see. No wonder you called me 'Ōtsutsuki Kirito.' But I've never met the clan you mentioned, nor do I have their destructive tendencies. I'd never harm others needlessly. Naruto can vouch for me on that."
Kirito extended his hand toward Sasuke. "Naruto is desperately searching for you, risking his life. If you don't explain things, I'll drag you to him myself and make you talk."
Sasuke remained silent. After a long pause, he finally said, "We come from the future, and our goal is to protect Naruto. The enemy is an Ōtsutsuki named Urashiki."
Sasuke explained that Urashiki initially targeted Naruto of this era. Due to their interference, it delayed him, but he still came to this world.
"I've noticed this timeline differs from what I remember," Sasuke added. "Especially with your presence. That's all I can tell you."
"And the boy who resembles Naruto?"
"I can guess..." Kirito said, letting the matter drop as Sasuke's silence made it clear he wouldn't share more.
Kirito's thoughts churned. Sasuke had mentioned a future without him, implying that this Sasuke was from the original timeline, not Kirito's altered one.
"If Urashiki's target was the original past, how did he end up here?" Kirito mused.
He turned to Sasuke and asked, "What kind of person is Urashiki? Do you need my help? Naruto is my comrade, and I want to protect him too."
"No. If you really want to help Naruto, just keep your mouth shut," Sasuke replied curtly.
"Why don't you just meet him? Discussing things openly would make cooperation easier," Kirito suggested. "Besides, this past isn't your past, and this future isn't your future either."
"Mind your own business," Sasuke said coldly, leaving without looking back.
Even though he knew this wasn't his past, Sasuke didn't want to meet Naruto. Interfering with those close to him could alter destiny, something Sasuke wanted to avoid.
Kirito stood quietly, watching Sasuke leave, wondering what lay ahead for this fractured timeline.
