Chapter 9: 9. Pichu
Reality and games are completely different.
In the game, berries are simply tossed into a machine, and with the press of a button, out come the energy cubes. But Evan can tell you clearly, that's just not how it works.
Are you sure it's fine to mix all kinds of berry pulp together? In reality, a lot of pulp is left after juicing the berries, and don't forget about the seeds that need to be dealt with. Some berries even have unpleasant flavors, and a few are downright strange. While Pokémon might love them, when mixed with others, it can turn into some... questionable cuisine.
So, people need to process everything themselves.
This is why making energy cubes in real life is actually a bit of a hassle. You need to clean the berries, cut them up, and remove the seeds. Then comes the juicing. After squeezing and filtering the juice, you get rid of the pulp. Next, the juice is set aside, and other ingredients are added. Each type of berry juice often needs to be processed two or three times to get the right effect for making energy cubes.
The children at the orphanage had helped the old director make energy cubes before, so they knew how to do it. Everyone squatted down and started preparing the berries, juicing them, and collecting the pulp. This leftover pulp has its uses too. You can burn it with firewood to make the best Mulch, which is great for feeding fruit trees. Nothing goes to waste.
The children, knowing how to be thrifty, collected all the pulp. Then, they took it to be burned down to ashes.
At this moment, Luna couldn't help but mutter as she looked at the pulp. "Evan, if I had a Fire-type Pokémon, I could use Flamethrower and burn this stuff in no time. We wouldn't have to go through all this."
Evan, who had just brought in more berries, overheard her and chuckled. "A Fire-type Pokémon, huh? Well, if nothing else, my Pokémon egg is a Fire-type. It's a Charmander. When it hatches, we can have it handle this."
"And when we get the chance, we should bring in some Pokémon to help around here," Evan continued. "Even if they're not for battling, they can still help out. The orchard could definitely use some Pokémon to watch over it."
Hearing this, Luna's eyes lit up. "Brother Evan, Shuckle can make delicious juice. Can we raise a few of those? And Charmander could help burn the berry pulp and maybe even barbecue! If we had a Vanillite, it could manage the ice storage. Pichu could generate electricity, and we could get a Growlithe to guard the orchard. Miltank could produce milk so we wouldn't need to buy any, and Machamp could help carry heavy stuff."
Luna was getting excited, her imagination running wild. She thought it was all perfectly doable.
Evan, hearing her suggestions, was momentarily taken aback, then fell into deep thought. "You know, that's actually a great idea. But it'll be tricky to catch them all. I'll take the Senior Breeder certification soon, and maybe we could open a breeding house. We could specialize in helping people care for their Pokémon and even have their Pokémon help us out."
As he spoke, Evan's eyes brightened. When they had enough funds, they could expand the land behind the orphanage, transforming it into various terrains. They could turn the orphanage into a breeding house.
Breeding houses are meant to help Trainers take care of their Pokémon. Since many people don't have enough space at home, they leave their Pokémon in breeding houses for care. And here, they could make energy cubes too, becoming completely self-sufficient.
Plus, they could charge a fee for these services. Not only that, but Trainers would pay generously for the care provided to their Pokémon.
So, Evan could also have other people's Pokémon work for him? The more he thought about it, the more excited he became. Not only were energy cubes a marketable product, but he could make money while having Pokémon help out for free. It was all part of "training"! Just the idea was thrilling.
Luna, standing nearby, became even more excited when she heard Evan mention turning the orphanage into a breeding house. She wasn't the only one—other children heard it too.
"Evan! Are you serious? You want to turn the orphanage into a breeding house?" A little girl, only four years old, ran up to Evan and hugged his leg, her eyes full of excitement. For these kids, few things were more appealing than being surrounded by Pokémon. Many of them even dreamed of becoming Trainers.
Seeing her hopeful look, Evan felt his heart soften. "Yes," he said, smiling. "It's decided! After we finish making these energy cubes, I'll take the advanced Breeder certification exam. Then, I'll apply to open a breeding house. Totally doable."
To officially open a breeding house, you needed a certification from a senior Breeder—without it, there was no way to get a business license. After all, no one would trust their Pokémon to someone without proper qualifications.
Upon hearing Evan's confirmation, the little kids burst into cheers, jumping around in excitement. Evan couldn't help but laugh at their joy. Shaking his head, he quietly returned to work.
He began processing the various juices they had extracted from the berries. For example, berries like Nutpea had a lot of starch, which had to be carefully handled. First, he removed the pulp, then added Tolkowsky powder and stirred it in. After letting the mixture settle, the water would separate into two layers—once that happened, Evan would pour off the top layer. The pinkish-white substance left behind would be the starchy essence of the Nutpea Berry. This would later be dried and turned into starch, which, when combined with other ingredients, would slowly form a gel.
That gelatinous material would then be steamed and baked into a complete energy cube. Evan was working on making several kinds of cubes this time, with different recipes for different effects. He had more than a dozen medium and low-level energy cube recipes prepared, so he had a lot of work ahead of him.
Once the kids finished their initial help, Evan sent them off to play with Pichu. Left to work alone, he began preparing the energy cubes.
Since they had Pichu now, the first energy cube Evan planned to make was one that Electric-type Pokémon would love. With that in mind, he got started.
Meanwhile, Pichu was surrounded by a group of young girls, all excitedly playing with him. Though Pichu had initially been reluctant when Evan caught him, he had gradually come to accept it.
While walking around, Luna suddenly led Pichu to a storage room, then pulled out a strange device, grinning mischievously as she looked at him.
"Pika?" (ΩДΩ)
