Pokemon: The Master Of Monsters

Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Vermilion Gym

"Gary, thank you. I had a lot of fun today." Sabrina took the skewers from Gary and thanked him sincerely.

This was the first time Sabrina had felt this happy since her childhood. Although Vermilion City was nearby, Sabrina had never visited it. It was also her first time seeing the sea.

"Just be happy," Gary responded.

Gary, too, had enjoyed the day. Although he was Professor Oak's grandson, his childhood was mostly spent in Pallet Town. The only time he had left was when he stayed in Cianwood City for three years to learn martial arts, and even then, he had focused more on training than enjoying himself.

"So, when do you plan to challenge the gym?" Sabrina asked.

"Tomorrow morning."

It was only Thursday. The auctions in Vermilion City were held on weekends, so there was nothing pressing tomorrow. Gary figured he might as well challenge the Vermilion Gym.

"Are the Pokémon you've caught not enough?" Sabrina asked.

Sabrina knew Gary had plans to participate in the auction as well. In Vermilion City, the auctions often featured rare or high-potential Pokémon.

But Gary had caught many Pokémon already. Even if he wanted to capture more, he needed to let the ones he already had grow stronger before capturing new ones.

"Not enough. I'm planning to capture a Pidgeot. I want to see if one is available at the auction," Gary explained.

"Pidgeot? Couldn't you just catch one in the wild?"

Sabrina had thought Gary would be looking for rare Pokémon, but Pidgeot seemed like an odd choice. After all, there were Pidgeys in the wild that could evolve into Pidgeot.

"Forget about catching one in the wild." Gary waved his hand dismissively.

Gary had considered catching a wild Pidgeot, knowing that a Pidgeot raised in the wild would have great potential. However, Pidgeot was a social Pokémon, and when Pidgeotto evolved into Pidgeot, it would take control of a forest, becoming the protector of the surrounding Pidgeys and Pidgeottos.

Once Pidgeot appeared, it would drive away Fearow and Spearow, which were natural enemies. If Gary captured the wild Pidgeot, the group of Pidgeys and Pidgeottos might fall apart.

Gary was also aware that wild Pidgeot were often above level 40. Even with his strength, he wouldn't necessarily be able to defeat one in battle. Especially with the Pidgeottos and Pidgeys around it, it would be a tough challenge.

Sabrina didn't press any further. After a day full of fun, Sabrina was happy to try something new. She had always spent her time training with Psychic powers in the gym, but she hadn't realized there was so much to experience outside.

The Next Day

In the morning, Gary and Sabrina arrived at the entrance of Vermilion Gym.

The gym was built in a modern style, with lightning-shaped decorations on its façade. Anyone could tell it was an Electric-type Gym just by looking at it.

"Another one."

"Ah, I hope he's not too badly hurt."

As they passed by, people whispered to each other when they saw Gary and Sabrina. The locals knew Lian well and understood the kind of fighter he was.

His fighting style was rough, and he would defeat any challenger with overwhelming force, often leaving their Pokémon seriously injured. This had made the Pokémon Center in Vermilion City one of the busiest around.

Quest Notification

[Ding! Quest released: Challenge Vermilion Gym / Rewards: Low-level Rare Candy X5, Intermediate Rare Candy X5! Permanent Skill Learning Device: Thunderbolt, Top-quality Magnet (Increases Electric-Type Skill Power by 50%).]

What? How are these rewards given? Gary was a bit surprised. The system provided Rare Candy in two grades—low and intermediate. It made him wonder if Lian's strength was between low and intermediate levels.

He'd figured out that the rewards for gym challenges were based on the rival's strength. Previously, only low-level Rare Candies had been rewarded. But now that they were at the Saffron Gym, the rewards had improved to intermediate-level candies.

Gary thought that the next four gyms would be strong, and the rewards would include even better Rare Candies—possibly high-level ones. So, the low-level Rare Candies would need to be used sparingly, as there wouldn't be many more opportunities to earn them.

Gary and Sabrina approached the door of the gym. After a quick scan, Gary couldn't find a doorbell, so he simply pushed open the door and entered.

Inside, the gym appeared dark, and at the far end, there were several men and women dressed in biker outfits. Their fierce looks made it clear that they were not ordinary people. The bikers noticed Gary and Sabrina entering and looked at them with suspicion.

"Hello, I'm here to challenge the gym. Is the owner, Lian, around?" Gary asked.

The bikers sneered at him, not taking him seriously.

"Another one," one of the male bikers muttered.

"Humph. Let me see who this is," a deep voice responded from the shadows.

A tall, muscular figure stepped forward, emerging from the darkness. Gary and Sabrina recognized him immediately. It was Lian, a powerhouse in the Vermilion Gym. His European-American features and imposing physique made him resemble a wrestler from WWE. He wore only a jacket with the zipper open, showing off his well-developed chest and abdominal muscles.

"Wow, he's so strong."

Though Gary had heard about Lian's appearance, seeing him in person was still a bit overwhelming. His muscles were intimidating, and his stature was impressive.

"Welcome to Vermilion City!" Lian greeted them with open arms, before wrapping them around Sabrina in a friendly hug.

Sabrina, who wasn't used to strangers touching her, reacted instantly. Her eyes glowed with blue psychic energy, and with a powerful psychic force, she sent Lian flying across the room.

"Are you okay, gym leader?" one of the bikers called out, concerned.

"What are you doing?" another biker asked, surprised.

Sabrina didn't respond immediately. Her psychic energy continued to press down on the bikers, who found themselves unable to move. Sabrina coldly stated, "I don't like strangers touching me."

Sensing the situation, Lian quickly apologized, recognizing that Sabrina was a Psychic-type trainer. He didn't want to provoke her further. "I'm sorry for being so reckless. Please, forgive me."

Once Lian apologized, Sabrina lifted the psychic force holding the bikers in place, and they all relaxed, stepping back and realizing they were dealing with someone very powerful.

---

Lian turned to Sabrina and asked seriously, "Who are you?"

"My name is Gary, from Pallet Town. I'm here to challenge the gym," Gary said.

"I'm Sabrina," Sabrina replied simply.

---

With introductions made, Gary prepared for his challenge, knowing that Lian was no easy opponent. Yet, the reward was worth the effort—a chance to prove himself and earn another gym badge.
