Chapter 63: Chapter 64: Pokémon in the Shadows
Jessie's voice seemed to unlock Meowth's frozen vocal cords, jolting him awake.
Meowth stepped back instinctively but tripped over his own feet, falling onto the roof. Raising his trembling right paw, he pointed in front of him, his voice panicked and shaky. "Y-yes! It's Will-O-Wisp! Meow!"
"Will-O-Wisp?!" Jessie and James turned their gazes to where Meowth was pointing. Sure enough, an eerie orange flame floated mid-air, casting a ghostly glow. Cold sweat ran down their backs.
"Is it... really Will-O-Wisp?!" James stammered, his face pale with terror. Although he had heard countless ghost stories, experiencing such a phenomenon firsthand was entirely different.
"Will-O-Wisp or not, it doesn't matter!" Jessie retorted sharply. Unlike James, Jessie prided herself on her courage. Though the strange sight startled her initially, she quickly collected herself. With a fierce expression, she declared, "No ghost can scare me!"
Jessie was convinced this wasn't a ghost but rather the work of a Pokémon. After all, ghost Pokémon were a known part of the world, and she firmly believed all supernatural events could be traced back to them. The so-called Will-O-Wisp had to be the work of a Ghost-type Pokémon!
Determined to expose the truth, Jessie grabbed a Poké Ball to release Ekans, her trusted Pokémon. However, before she could act, the orange flame started floating closer.
"It's coming! It's coming!" Meowth shrieked, unable to contain his fear. His cry echoed through the dark and silent valley, awakening nearby Pokémon.
Inside the Pokémon Center, some staff noticed the commotion outside. However, upon hearing random Pokémon cries, they assumed it was nothing unusual. They didn't think to check the roof for intruders.
"Stop screaming, you coward!" Jessie smacked Meowth on the head with a piece of popcorn. Meowth immediately quieted, realizing Jessie looked scarier than the mysterious flame. He shook his head and covered his mouth with his paws, too frightened to speak.
"Whatever this is, I'm not afraid!" Jessie exclaimed, glaring at the Will-O-Wisp. She threw her Poké Ball, summoning Ekans. "Ekans, deal with that ghost!"
Ekans emerged from the Poké Ball and immediately noticed the floating flame. Flicking its tongue to sense the surroundings, it identified the flame as a Pokémon. Realizing this, Ekans slithered forward, less intimidated now, and prepared to follow Jessie's command to capture it.
However, just as Ekans began moving, the Will-O-Wisp reacted. It flickered briefly before transforming into a swirling orb of purple and black Ghost-type energy. The sphere launched with blinding speed, slamming into Ekans before it could dodge.
The impact didn't explode but instead pushed Ekans backward, sending it crashing into Jessie, James, and Meowth. The energy sphere's precise control carried all four of them off the roof.
"What's happening?!" Jessie yelled as the trio was propelled through the air with no chance to retaliate.
The Ghost-type energy orb then shifted direction, rising suddenly to carry them higher. It propelled them into their hot air balloon, which was tethered nearby, before finally detonating with a loud explosion.
The blast echoed through the valley, startling more Pokémon. Staff and trainers inside the Pokémon Center woke up, puzzled by the noise. They rushed to investigate but found nothing on the roof except an open vent.
Meanwhile, the Team Rocket trio clung desperately to the remains of their hot air balloon's basket, which was sent flying into the distance by the explosion's force.
"What on earth was that thing?!" James shouted, holding onto the basket for dear life.
Jessie's eyes narrowed as she tried to recall the shadowy figure. All she could remember were its haunting, flame-like eyes that glowed eerily in the darkness. It was unlike any Pokémon she had encountered before.
The mysterious Pokémon watched silently as Team Rocket vanished into the distance. Then, sensing the commotion below, it melted into the shadows, disappearing entirely.

The following morning, the Pokémon Center was abuzz with chatter about the strange events from the night before. Trainers gathered in the dining area, exchanging theories.
"Did you hear what happened last night?" Brock asked as he joined Ash and Misty at their table.
"I heard some staff say someone tried to sneak into the Pokémon Center but was driven away by a trainer's Pokémon," Brock explained, his tone serious.
"Someone tried to break in?" Misty frowned, exchanging a glance with Ash.
Ash leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. The situation felt eerily familiar. He suspected the intruders were none other than Team Rocket. After all, they had been unusually quiet since his journey began. It made sense that they would try something sneaky like this to get to Pikachu.
"So, who stopped them?" Ash asked, curious about the mysterious trainer or Pokémon that intervened.
"Nobody knows," Brock replied. "The staff didn't see anyone when they arrived at the scene. It's like whoever stopped the intruders didn't want to be discovered."
"Interesting," Ash muttered, tapping his chin. The secrecy surrounding the incident only deepened the mystery.
As the trio finished breakfast and prepared to leave, a young Chinese trainer named Liang approached their table. "Excuse me, I couldn't help overhearing your conversation. I was outside the Pokémon Center early this morning and saw something strange near the roof. It looked like a pair of glowing eyes."
Ash's interest was piqued. "Glowing eyes? Did you see the Pokémon?"
Liang shook his head. "No, it disappeared into the shadows before I could get a good look. But it felt... different. I don't think it was an ordinary Pokémon."
"Thanks for telling us," Ash said, nodding. Liang's account only added to the sense of mystery.
After gathering their things, Ash, Misty, and Brock set off toward Mt. Moon. They were eager to continue their journey, but Ash couldn't shake the feeling that something was following them.
---
As sunlight filtered through the trees, a pair of orange, flame-like eyes appeared in Ash's shadow. They blinked once before retreating deeper into the darkness.
"Pi?" Pikachu, perched on Ash's shoulder, twitched its ears and turned to glance behind them. Its sharp instincts told it something wasn't right.
"What's wrong, Pikachu?" Ash asked, noticing his partner's sudden alertness.
"Pikapi..." Pikachu shook its head, unable to explain the unease it felt.
Ash smiled reassuringly. "As long as you're okay, that's what matters." Still, he couldn't ignore the nagging sensation that they were being watched.
The group continued onward, unaware that the shadowy Pokémon was silently observing them. Whatever its intentions, it seemed content to remain hidden—for now.
---
The strange events from the previous night remained unsolved, leaving trainers at the Pokémon Center with more questions than answers. But for Ash and his friends, the journey continued, with new challenges and mysteries waiting just around the corner.
