POKEMON : THE WAY OF PERCEPTION

Chapter 64: Chapter 65: Deeper Understanding

The entrance to Mt. Moon's cave lay just east of the Pokémon Center, only a short distance away. In less than half an hour, Ash and his companions—Brock and Misty—found themselves standing at the cavern's mouth.

As Ash looked around, he noticed a crowd of Trainers gathered near the entrance. While some were familiar faces from the Pokémon Center, others were strangers who had likely spent the night outside, either by choice or necessity.

Not all Trainers opted to stay at Pokémon Centers. Some preferred the freedom and convenience of camping, while others might have been too far to make the trek back. Regardless, the area was bustling with activity.

Some Trainers sat eating breakfast, others were already training, and a few engaged in friendly battles. Amid this lively scene, Ash, Brock, and Misty were just another group of travelers.

After passing through the camp, the trio reached the cave's entrance. The dim light from outside faded quickly into darkness, revealing an unlit cavern.

"This is normal," Brock explained as he pulled out a portable flashlight. "Mt. Moon is part of an undeveloped mountain range. Setting up electric lighting here would disrupt the Pokémon that thrive in the dark. The League deliberately avoids interfering with their natural habitat."

Ash nodded, absorbing the explanation. "I guess it makes sense. Humans have already taken up so much space. We need to leave something for Pokémon."

"Exactly," Brock said. "The League prioritizes preserving the natural ecosystem wherever possible, especially in places like this."

As they ventured further into the cave, the beam of Brock's flashlight illuminated the rocky walls. The path itself wasn't overly complex; there was one main route that led through the mountain. However, without proper lighting, it would be easy to lose one's way in the shadows.

"But... there sure are a lot of Zubat here," Ash commented, swatting at the air as a small flock of the bat-like Pokémon swooped past.

In just thirty minutes, they had already encountered several groups of Zubat, each numbering at least twenty.

"Zubat prefer dark environments," Brock explained. "They're most commonly found in caves like this. You might see a few in forests, but it's rare to spot them on open plains."

Ash listened intently as Brock continued, "Besides Zubat, you'll also find Geodude here. Sometimes, you'll come across Gravelers or even an Onix."

"Wait," Ash interrupted. "What about their evolved forms, like Golbat or Golem? Don't they live here too?"

Brock shook his head. "Not usually. The League regulates the Pokémon population here. Stronger Pokémon are relocated to ensure the safety of Trainers passing through."

This explanation piqued Misty's curiosity. "How does that work?"

Brock elaborated, "Mt. Moon didn't originally have this main path. The League created it to connect the nearby cities and give Trainers a safe place to explore and train. To maintain balance, League officials patrol the area, relocating overly strong Pokémon to other regions, like forests or mountains."

Ash furrowed his brow. "So the Pokémon just... leave?"

"Most do," Brock replied. "Over time, they've adapted. Pokémon that evolve here often relocate voluntarily, ensuring their offspring have a safe environment to grow. Of course, there are exceptions—some Pokémon are too stubborn or aggressive to move on their own."

Ash nodded thoughtfully. He hadn't realized the amount of effort the League put into maintaining the delicate balance between humans and Pokémon.

"This kind of coexistence didn't happen by accident," Brock continued. "It's the result of years of careful planning and collaboration between Trainers, scientists, and the League."

As Ash processed this, he realized the complexity of the League's responsibilities. He had always dreamed of becoming a Pokémon Master, but this new understanding made him question the kind of responsibilities he might face in such a role.

"It seems like being a champion or Elite Four member isn't just about battling," Ash murmured. "There's so much more to it than I thought."

Misty glanced at him. "Having second thoughts?"

"Not really," Ash replied, scratching his head. "But I think I need to figure out what kind of Trainer I want to be."

The trio continued their journey deeper into the cave. If they followed the main path, they could cross Mt. Moon in a day. However, after a brief discussion, they decided to take their time and explore more thoroughly.

Ash had a specific goal in mind: he wanted to encounter as many Pokémon as possible. So far, they had only seen Zubat and Geodude. There had been no sign of Paras, Clefairy, or any other species rumored to inhabit the area.

The group pressed on, eager to uncover the cave's secrets.

---

Elsewhere, a Trainer named Zhang Wei observed the entrance to Mt. Moon from a distance. He had arrived late the previous night and decided to camp outside rather than risk navigating the cave in darkness.

Zhang Wei had heard rumors about a rare Clefairy that appeared during a full moon. As a researcher specializing in Fairy-type Pokémon, he was determined to document the phenomenon.

Equipped with his notebook and camera, Zhang Wei prepared to enter the cave. Unknown to him, Ash and his friends were just a short distance ahead.

---

Inside Mt. Moon, Ash's group paused to rest by a small underground stream. Misty released her Starmie to cool off in the water, while Pikachu sipped cautiously from the edge.

"This place feels so alive," Misty remarked. "It's amazing how many Pokémon call this home."

Brock nodded. "It's their sanctuary. That's why the League is so protective of places like this."

As they rested, a faint sound echoed through the cavern—a melodic hum that seemed to come from deeper within.

"What's that?" Ash asked, standing up.

"It sounds like... singing?" Misty guessed, her curiosity piqued.

"Could it be Clefairy?" Brock suggested.

Excited by the possibility, the group quickly packed up and followed the sound. The melody grew louder as they ventured further into the cave, leading them to a wide, open chamber.

There, under the soft glow of moonlight filtering through a crack in the ceiling, a small group of Clefairy danced in a circle.

Ash, Misty, and Brock watched in awe as the Clefairy performed their mysterious ritual.

For Ash, this moment reaffirmed his love for Pokémon and his desire to learn more about their world.

As the group observed from the shadows, they remained silent, careful not to disturb the enchanting scene before them.
