POKEMON : THE WAY OF PERCEPTION

Chapter 65: Chapter 66: Clefairy

The absence of sunlight in the cave made it impossible to judge the time of day, but Ash and his friends relied on their watches and Pokédex to keep track. Around noon, they decided to have their lunch without lighting a fire. Thankfully, Brock had prepared bento boxes earlier that morning. Although the meals were cold, they still tasted great.

"Tonight, we'll see if we can find a good spot to start a fire," Brock said, surveying the surroundings. Having never spent a night in Mt. Moon before, he could only adapt to the situation as it unfolded.

After lunch, the group took a short break before continuing their journey. Along the way, they encountered several Trainers from Cerulean City. Ash eagerly took on a few battles, emerging victorious each time.

These Trainers were not as strong as the Gym Leaders Ash had faced, including Brock during his Pewter City Gym challenge. Nevertheless, the battles provided valuable experience and an opportunity for his Pokémon to practice their moves in real combat scenarios.

At around six o'clock in the evening, the group decided to stop for the night. They found a flat, secluded area that showed no signs of Pokémon activity, making it an ideal camping spot.

"It seems we're the only ones here tonight," Brock remarked as he started gathering firewood from his backpack. He had collected enough earlier to keep the fire burning through the night.

Meanwhile, Ash and Misty were busy setting up tents. Pikachu and the other Pokémon, who had expended much energy during the day's battles, were already enjoying their meals.

Once the tent was ready, Brock began cooking dinner. The aroma of his dishes quickly filled the cave, a testament to his exceptional cooking skills. Even in such a basic environment, he managed to prepare delicious food.

"I learned a lot today," Ash said suddenly, setting down his chopsticks. "But it's a shame we haven't seen any Clefairy yet."

His sentiment was shared by Misty. She adored cute Pokémon, and Clefairy was one of her favorites. In fact, Clefairy-shaped dolls were among the top-selling toys not only in the Kanto region but worldwide.

Suddenly, Pikachu's ears twitched, and it stopped playing with the other Pokémon. It turned toward a sound and noticed a small, pink Pokémon peeking out from behind a rock.

"Pika, Pika!" Pikachu waved enthusiastically, drawing the attention of both the Pokémon and its companions. The little Pokémon, curious but cautious, continued to observe from behind the rock.

"What's wrong?" Ash and Misty followed Pikachu's gaze and were thrilled to see the Pokémon hiding timidly.

"Is that… Clefairy?" Ash exclaimed.

Indeed, it was the signature Pokémon of Mt. Moon. This Clefairy was noticeably smaller than most, indicating that it had only recently evolved.

Clefairy's evolutionary line consists of three stages: Cleffa, the baby form; Clefairy, the most common stage; and Clefable, which evolves with the help of a Moon Stone.

"Skin…" Clefairy seemed startled upon realizing it had been spotted. It shrank back further behind the rock, cautiously peeking out with one eye to observe Ash, Misty, Pikachu, and the other Pokémon. Its curious yet shy demeanor was undeniably adorable.

"So cute!" Misty squealed, standing up with the intent to approach the Clefairy. However, Ash quickly stopped her.

"Wait, don't rush over," Ash said, gently pulling her back. "Look at it. Clefairy is clearly nervous. If we move too quickly, we'll scare it away."

Misty glanced back at Clefairy and realized Ash was right. She smiled apologetically at the little Pokémon and sat down again.

"This Clefairy must have been born not long ago," Brock observed. "It probably hasn't encountered humans or other Pokémon before, which explains its curious yet fearful behavior."

"As expected from Brock," Ash and Misty nodded in agreement with his analysis.

Ash reached into his backpack and pulled out some extra Pokémon food he had prepared. "Pikachu, take this to Clefairy," he said.

"Pika, Pikapi!" Pikachu eagerly took the food and trotted toward Clefairy.

Clefairy tensed up as Pikachu approached but didn't run away. Instead, it kept a cautious eye on Pikachu and the food in its paws.

Pikachu stopped a meter away and raised the food, chattering in a friendly tone. Encouraged by Pikachu's approachability, Clefairy slowly emerged from its hiding spot.

At this moment, Ash and his friends noticed that Clefairy was holding a grayish stone almost as large as itself.

"Is that… a Moon Stone?" Brock said, his eyes narrowing as he studied the stone.

Ash and Misty had never seen a Moon Stone before, but Brock's familiarity with evolutionary items made him the authority on the subject. However, he hesitated.

Typically, Clefairy would evolve into Clefable upon touching a Moon Stone. Yet, this Clefairy remained in its current form despite holding the stone, leaving Brock uncertain.

Ash and Misty turned their attention to the stone Clefairy was clutching. It appeared unremarkable, gray and black, resembling an ordinary rock. Unlike Thunder Stones or Fire Stones, it didn't emit any distinctive glow or energy.

"If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have thought this was a Moon Stone," Ash admitted.

Moon Stones are rare and essential for the evolution of certain Pokémon, making them highly valuable. A single stone could cost more than two months of Ash's allowance.

Pikachu offered the food to Clefairy, who hesitated briefly before accepting it. As Clefairy nibbled on the food, its initial wariness began to fade, replaced by a growing curiosity about Ash and his companions.

"This is a good sign," Brock said with a smile. "It's starting to trust us."

Clefairy glanced up from its meal and shyly waved at Pikachu, who responded with an encouraging smile. The sight warmed everyone's hearts, and Misty couldn't resist saying, "I really hope we can get to know it better."

Ash, too, hoped for the same. The rare encounter with Clefairy made their journey through Mt. Moon all the more memorable.

As they watched the little Clefairy interact with Pikachu and the other Pokémon, the group felt a renewed sense of wonder about the mysteries of the Pokémon world.
