Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Shoot First
Taking pictures of them really tested the photographer's skills.
Fortunately, Selena was professional enough. Even in the face of three deadpan expressions, she managed to use lighting, angles, and details to capture a few decent admission photos.
"Alright, I'll have the photos ready for you in about six hours. In the meantime, feel free to explore and enjoy Sky City."
"Thank you, Teacher Selena."
Rossweise breathed a sigh of relief and turned to look at Luna nearby, intending to call her youngest daughter to leave with them.
But when she looked at Luna, the little dragon girl sat there obediently, staring at them with a look of envy.
Rossweise's heart trembled.
Just as she was about to call Luna to take a picture too, Leon said,
"Luna, do you want to take a picture with Mom and Dad as well?"
Luna's eyes lit up. "Yes!"
Rossweise glanced at Leon, wanting to say something, but eventually looked away.
Luna stood between the couple this time. It wasn't a family portrait or an admission photo, so all three were much more relaxed.
Leon even picked Luna up. Luna eagerly extended her little tail, mimicking her mom's earlier pose, trying to make a heart shape with Leon.
Leon naturally obliged.
Soon, Noah also joined in to take a few warm, candid photos.
Without rigid rules, they freely struck different poses.
"Big sister, do you want to make a heart with Dad? It's so fun!"
Noah was momentarily stunned, then shook her head firmly. "No."
"Ugh, big sister, you're no fun. Fine, I'll make a heart with you instead."
This time, Noah agreed. "Alright."
The two little dragon girls ended up taking many photos together.
Selena's work became much easier after that.
While the two little ones were taking pictures, Leon and Rossweise sat nearby.
They didn't chat, just silently watched their daughters pose for photos.
Leon had no desire to talk to this female dragon.
After all, whenever they chatted, as long as it wasn't about their daughters, they would inevitably argue.
Rossweise seemed to think the same. With her legs crossed and one hand propping her chin, she silently watched her two daughters, a faintly gratified smile on her face.
Thus, a rather strange scene unfolded in the photo studio:
On one side, the photo session was lively and cheerful, with the two dragon girls striking various poses and Selena thoroughly enjoying the shoot.
On the other side, in the resting area, the "sweet" couple, who had just made hearts with their tails and hands, sat in utter silence.
It didn't look like they were there for a photo shoot—more like they were at the civil affairs office for a divorce.
Perhaps realizing the atmosphere wasn't conducive to family harmony, Rossweise stared straight ahead and said casually,
"Aren't you going to start a conversation to pass the time? Noah and Luna seem like they'll be taking pictures for a while."
"What would we even talk about? If you want, we could step outside and have a fight. By the time we're done, they'll probably be finished."
Sure enough, whenever they chatted, they couldn't go three sentences without arguing.
"Sky City has strict safety regulations. Public fights are punishable by at least six months in custody."
"Are you giving me a legal lesson? I'm a human; dragon laws don't apply to me."
"What about human punishments for public brawling?"
"Win, and you go to jail. Lose, and you go to the hospital."
"Well, that's not so different from dragon laws."
"Hm… Huh? Don't try to bond with me, female dragon."
The couple bickered for half an hour before Noah and Luna finished their photos.
"These photos will take me until tonight to develop. Would you like to pick them up later or come back tomorrow?"
"We'll pick them up tonight. Thank you, Teacher."
"Not a problem. I hope Your Majesty, Your Highness, and the two little princesses have a great time in Sky City."
After thanking Selena, the family of four left the studio.
Selena watched them disappear around the corner before lowering her gaze to a particular shot she had just captured.
It wasn't a family portrait or a picture of the two dragon sisters.
Instead…
A silver-haired beauty and a young man sat close together. Though their bodies faced different directions, their gazes were connected.
Bright sunlight streamed through the studio windows, spilling warmly over their shoulders. Specks of dust danced like little sprites in the light, swirling around the pair.
Their eyes met—no overt tenderness, no deep affection—but a faint, beautiful innocence lingered, as if the emotion in their gaze was a cup of water about to overflow.
"You do make a convincing couple," Selena remarked.
———
After leaving Selena's photo studio, the family of four found a quiet little restaurant.
Upon entering, various lizards with different types of tails were walking back and forth in front of Leon.
He stood at the entrance, somewhat dazed, staring at the room full of dragon diners. Leon's legs couldn't help but start trembling again.
"First-class merit... first-class merit... so many first-class merits." Leon muttered incoherently.
Roseweisse rolled her eyes at him. "What are you getting all excited for? Don't forget, you're the amazing person who had two little first-class merits with a first-class merit."
"No, no, your rank isn't just first-class merit."
"Then what is it?"
"Special-class merit, the kind where the king personally crowns and confers medals on me."
Roseweisse snorted and ignored him.
They found a spot by the window and ordered a few simple dishes.
The restaurant was very quiet, with everyone talking in low voices.
Leon and Roseweisse, in mutual understanding, didn't bother to strike up a conversation.
The two little ones were even more well-behaved, eating silently once the dishes arrived.
After lunch, they still had about four or five hours before their photos would be ready.
Fortunately, there were many entertainment venues in Sky City to pass the time.
Of course, the priority was to make their daughters happy. Leon and Roseweisse didn't care much about where they went.
Although they often clashed in daily life—after all, you couldn't expect a pair of rivals to greet each other with smiles every day—they were surprisingly in sync when it came to parenting.
As they wandered around, they came to a playground for young dragons. The two little dragon girls ran ahead, hand in hand, while Leon and Roseweisse followed a short distance behind, keeping an eye on them.
There were many parents with children in the playground, but most of them were alone. Couples like Leon and Roseweisse were rare.
It seemed dragons really were quite enthusiastic about asexual reproduction.
After playing with some simple attractions, Luna noticed a balloon-shooting stall with many toy bear prizes.
She tugged her sister and excitedly ran over.
Since the younger sister wanted a toy bear, naturally, Noah had to step up on her behalf.
Watching Noah stand on a small stool and pick up the toy gun, Leon was slightly surprised.
"You dragons play with guns too?"
"Yes, but only in Sky City. It's a very inclusive city, often adopting interesting things or cultures from other races," Roseweisse explained. "As for other dragons outside, most are too proud to bother learning or accepting anything from others."
"Oh... I see."
Leon raised his arms, hands behind his head, and paused before casually saying, "Then I guess you're pretty open to advice."
Roseweisse glanced sideways. "What?"
"Remember last time I suggested you have the girls call you 'Mom' instead of 'Mother'? Didn't you tell them that very night?"
Roseweisse didn't shy away from the topic and admitted openly, "Yes, I have to say, your humans' parenting philosophies are indeed more refined than those of dragons."
"See? See? If it were just you raising the kids, the results might have been disastrous." Leon grinned smugly.
"Hmph, childish."
"You're childish."
"No, you are."
"It's you, mother dragon."
"Shut up."
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three shots rang out from the balloon-shooting stall.
From their angle, Leon and Roseweisse couldn't see how many balloons had been hit.
But judging by Noah's expression, the results didn't seem great.
Leon and Roseweisse exchanged glances and then, without a word, walked toward the stall.
As they approached, Noah fired a few more shots, but her serious little face still showed no joy.
When they got closer, it became clear—the stall owner was the one smiling.
"It's okay, kiddo. Try a few more times, and you'll definitely hit something." The owner held a money pouch stuffed with dragon currency.
It seemed he'd had a pretty good morning business-wise.
Noah fired two more shots.
Leon then noticed that the dragons' toy guns fired bullets made of concentrated magical energy. No wonder Luna didn't play—compared to her sister's advanced development, she wasn't at the age to use magic yet.
Even so, Noah's shots missed.
CLUNK!
Frustrated, she put the gun back on the table, biting her lip, her eyes filled with reluctance.
"Mom, Luna, let's go play somewhere else." Noah adjusted her mood, though she still seemed a bit pouty.
Though mature and sensible most of the time, she still had a bit of a childish streak.
When something really upset her, it showed clearly on her face.
Leon didn't encourage her to try again.
It was obvious the stall owner had tampered with the toy gun. Otherwise, with Noah's ability, she couldn't have missed every shot.
This kind of "business trick" was something Leon had figured out as a child. He hadn't expected it to work so well in Sky City, even making loads of money off dragon kids.
He stepped forward and picked Noah up from the stool.
The family of four turned to leave.
