chapter 60 - Divine Cat Mii-chan Awakens Maternal Instinct

60 Divine Cat Mii-chan Awakens Maternal Instinct

When I asked Sumire if she wanted to go to the bazaar, she made a gesture indicating she was staying in the stables. I’ll need to take her outside later.

On the way to the bazaar, I came across a large weapons and armor shop, so I decided to stop in.

As I looked around at the many fine weapons, I thought this place might be promising.

At the counter, there was an old man who looked like he’d wear a “stubborn” sign around his neck.

“This is no place for a kid like you. Come back in a few years.”

Kid… well, I’ve gotten used to it. Yeah, I’m a kid.

“I’d like to request repairs for this item. Also, I’d like to sell some items.”

“Ah. Hmmm. It’s dirty but a good piece. I’ll make it as good as new in two days. Which items do you want to sell?”

“I have some armor as well, but the space here is too small to display them all.”

“Got a storage unit, huh!?”

A young woman from the armor section came and led me to a back storage area.

It seems she wanted me to bring the items out here, so Mii-chan started pulling weapons and armor from the bag. Wait, were there this many? Oh right, I had some loot from thieves too.

“Mii~”

“Well, there are many good items. Unfortunately, this one is a common item, and its value is almost negligible.”

“Dad, the armor is mostly good quality. Some of it needs repairs, though.”

They’re father and daughter, but they don’t look alike at all. Mii-chan seems to share the same thought.

“Mii~”

After going through the items, the old man spoke up.

“Are you a merchant, kid?”

“No, I’m not.”

“Hmm. Normally, we wouldn’t buy such a large quantity.”

“What? Why is that?”

According to the old man, buying such a large quantity requires registration with the commercial guild. It’s hard to claim this was collected as a hobby. Proper commercial transaction procedures are needed, which would typically involve taxes and other fees.

“But still, it’s a shame to pass up such items.”

“Is there anything else you can use to prove your identity? That way, you could claim you’re not a merchant.”

I showed him my Hunter Guild ID.

“So you’re a guild employee…”

“Perfect. As a guild employee, you can justify it however you like.”

“They say a snake’s path is known to a snake. I’ll pretend I didn’t hear any of that.” Mii-chan also turned her head, as if to say she didn’t hear anything either.

The total amount for the buyout came to over 400,000 Ret, about double the investment. Quite a windfall. If I were a merchant, there would be taxes on this… but I didn’t hear that part. I told them I’d pick up the swords in two days.

There are still antiques and decorations left in Mii-chan’s bag. I might need to sell them in smaller batches or join the commercial guild. I should consult someone about that.

Feeling richer makes me feel richer in spirit too. I headed to the bazaar to buy red beans and flour, and as usual, did some browsing. Don’t say I’m incorrigible; money is important.

The capital’s bazaar had more stalls than ever before. There were exotic shops and some that looked quite suspicious. There were also spice shops, but their prices were too high for me to consider buying. I wonder if anyone actually buys from them.

After buying what I needed, I returned to the inn to find that Perro had also come back, carrying a small kitten.

“This one’s mother passed away. It was crying all alone.”

The kitten was smaller than Mii-chan. It’s a little orange tabby, and it does resemble Perro a bit… I suppose.

I put some cat food on a plate. The kitten, clearly hungry, devoured it quickly but seemed full after eating about a third. Perro ended up finishing the rest.

The kitten was dirty, so I tried to bathe it in a tub of warm water, but it resisted and caused my hands to get scratched. Thankfully, the mineral water cleaned and healed my wounds.

“Little one, you’ll be clean and it’ll feel nice. Don’t struggle, just go in.”

“As expected from someone who understands cat language.” The kitten calmed down immediately. As I washed it in the tub, it squinted its eyes and looked content. After cleaning its face, using my skill to dry it off, and wrapping it in a towel before placing it on the table, Mii-chan began grooming the kitten.

“Mii-chan must have awakened her maternal instincts. Thank you, Mii-chan.”

“Mii.”

The kitten, now full and feeling sleepy, began to doze off. I put it in the carrier bag, and it quickly fell asleep. Mii-chan cuddled up next to the kitten, settling in for the night. Rest well.

The next morning, the kitten was energetically running around. Mii-chan played with it but occasionally gave it some educational corrections—necessary, of course.

Last night, the kitten used the carrier bag, so Perro had to sleep on the bed. Today, I woke up to a kick in my side…

While summoning the cat food and mineral water, I noticed some new items. Cat shampoo that prevents insects and insect-like monsters from coming near for several days. What a high-performance shampoo! Combined with the litter box set, it should make camping a lot safer.

After breakfast, I adjusted the clock I received with the sound of the bell. Today, I plan to go to the Hunter’s Guild to get Perro’s Hunter license. If he can take on jobs around the city, he should be able to earn his own money.

“I’m sorry, but non-humans are a bit…”

“What? Is there such a regulation?”

“No, there isn’t, but…”

“I’m sorry, but could you please call someone higher up?”

“We cannot accommodate such requests.”

When I presented my guild staff certificate and insisted that I am indeed a Hunter Guild staff member, they reluctantly went to get someone from the back.

“Indeed, it is Mr. Nero, isn’t it?”

The chief officer, Seltio, would attend to us.

“Yes.”

“May I ask what brings you here today? Unfortunately, the guild master is absent.”

“I don’t need to see the guild master. I tried to get my friend a Hunter’s license, but was refused. I couldn’t accept the reason, so I asked for someone higher up.”

“Is your friend this cat?”

“Perro is a Kettsie!”

“A Kettsie, you say…”

Even the chief officer of the royal capital seemed troubled by this.

“To be honest, there is no precedent for this. We need the guild master’s judgment. I apologize, but could you please come back tomorrow? I will inform the guild master about this matter.”

It seems we’ll have to come back tomorrow.

“Mii.”
