chapter 62 - Divine Cat Mii-chan Agrees with Nero's Idea.

62: Divine Cat Mii-chan Agrees with Nero’s Idea.

I’ve been brought to a large kitchen… There are a lot of chefs here. Is this where we’re going to cook?

“The food will be served to the Queen and the Princess. Only those we trust can prepare it,” Nia said as a stout chef approached.

“I’m Gilbert, the head chef of the royal court. I agreed because it was the Queen’s request, but this isn’t exactly something to be happy about.”

Well, I can understand the pride of the head chef. But it’s not my concern; after all, I’m not a cook.

Since everyone’s waiting, let’s get started quickly. I handed the recipe to the head chef and began cooking. While boiling the adzuki beans, I made some improvised ketchup and garlic oil.

I received some meat that looked like chicken, marinated it in garlic oil with a bit of pepper, and set it aside. Finally, pepper! I also thinly sliced some potatoes and drained them. The preparations for the fried chicken and fries are done.

I would have liked some mayonnaise, but I couldn’t exactly ask the head chef to help with that, so I borrowed a young cook to help with the mixing.

Finally, I thought I’d try making soda water, though I wasn’t sure if it would work. I prepared a glass of water and used an air skill to create carbon dioxide in the water. It bubbled up, but when I drank it, it was just water…

Next, I’ll try a more advanced technique. I’ll create carbon dioxide in the water, just like before, but this time I’ll switch to a water skill and try to dissolve the gas into the water. This is tricky—the gas escapes during the switch.

If I made some laboratory equipment, it would be easy, but I’m not about to go that far just to make soda water. Still, after several tries, I finally got it to work. It’s fizzy! Though it’s not sweet, so it doesn’t taste great.

I squeezed some citrus fruit and mixed it with honey into the soda water. Then I took some water I had prepared earlier, froze it, crushed it into small pieces, and added it to a glass along with the soda water. It fizzed nicely Swish swish~.

I handed the glass to the head chef, who was still wearing his usual stern expression. His face changed the moment he tasted it. Gotcha.

It was almost lunchtime, so it was time to fry the chicken. I put the meat into the hot oil, and soon the kitchen was filled with a delicious aroma, drawing the other chefs in. I sliced some white bread, placed lettuce-like greens on it, and spread a mixture of mayo and ketchup to make an aurora sauce. After cutting the fried chicken in half, I sandwiched it between the bread, completing the fried chicken sandwich. I served it with fries and vegetable sticks and handed it to the head chef.

Though his expression remained stern, he did taste it.

“Annoyingly… it’s good.”

I made more of the same, added some soda water, and asked Nia-san to take it to the Queen and Princess. I had to stay behind in the kitchen since I still had azuki beans to finish. I figured Perro could handle Mii-chan’s meal.

Next, I started making kuzumochi for dessert. By this time, the head chef and the other chefs were watching me with great interest and started asking questions. They didn’t seem to know much about kudzu starch, so it might be more of a commoner’s ingredient. It’s quite versatile, though.

The azuki beans had softened nicely, so I began kneading them. I asked for two pots—one for anko sweetened only with brown sugar, and another for anko sweetened with brown sugar and honey.

I tried spreading the brown sugar anko on some toasted bread. Ah, this is it—the rich sweetness that leaves you fully satisfied even with just a little.

The head chef and the others tried it and nodded in approval. By spreading ingredients like anko and seasonings in this world, I’m essentially upgrading my own diet. Call me a culinary evangelist, wahahahaha!

I took the kudzu starch I had set aside, shaped it into kuzumochi, and wrapped it around the anko, creating some makeshift Japanese sweets. Quite elegant, if I do say so myself.

I asked the head chef if he had any more questions, and we went through a series of Q&As.

“Hmm. This has been very educational. The flexibility of using skills in cooking is something we should definitely learn from. You’re not quite there as a chef yet, but you seem to have potential. I could train you from the ground up. What do you say?”

Well, I’m not really a chef, so while it’s flattering to hear that from the head chef, I’ll have to respectfully decline.

“Hmph. If you change your mind, you’re welcome anytime.”

When I returned to the Queen and Princess, they were completely smitten with the kitten. This is exactly what the training we gave the kitten was meant to achieve.

“Oh, Nero-kun. You’re back. Lunch was absolutely delicious.”

“It was yummy!”

“Nero, why have you been hiding such delicious food from us? That’s just mean.”

It uses a lot of oil, so it’s not something I can make just anywhere.

“By the way, we’ve decided on a name for the kitten.”

“Ruka!”

Ruka—it means ‘bringer of light.’ That’s a beautiful name.

“Myaa~”

“Mii~”

Mii-chan started licking Ruka, and Ruka looked delighted.

It’s probably time to take our leave.

“Oh, you’re leaving already? You should stay a bit longer.”

“Kitty…”

I appreciate the sentiment, but my fragile nerves can’t handle much more. Even Mii-chan looks sad. I guess, even though it was a short time, she’s already grown attached to Ruka and finds it hard to leave.

“Mii…”

As we were leaving through the terrace, the Queen and Princess called out to me one more time, as if making sure I’d come back.

“Make sure to visit again.”

“Come back!”

“Myaa~”

“Mii~”

“We’ll definitely be back.”

I suppose I’ll have to check in on them before leaving the royal capital.

I gave Neia-san the name of the inn we’re staying at, so she can contact me if anything comes up.

On our way out, Neia-san handed me a small pouch. It had gold coins inside, but I returned it. Accepting it would feel like I’d sold Ruka for money. I just asked them to take good care of her.

I did the right thing, didn’t I?

“Mii!”
