chapter 63 - Divine Cat M-chan Saves the Boy.
63 Divine Cat Mii-chan Saves the Boy.
As we left the royal palace, we headed straight for the Hunter Guild.
At the reception, I noticed a boy who looked about twelve or thirteen desperately pleading with the receptionist. It seemed he was in trouble over a failed delivery mission. Apparently, some local thugs had stolen the package he was supposed to deliver. The receptionist told him he was liable for a penalty fee and the full cost of the item—an amount totaling one million Ret. That’s way too much for a kid to handle.
Mii-chan and Perro were visibly angry at this. Mii-chan kept tapping the carrier bag and looking at me, clearly urging me to do something. Alright, I suppose I need to say something.
“Mii!”
“Nero, you need to say something!”
I stood behind the boy and addressed the receptionist.
“Excuse me, but how was the price of that item calculated?”
“I’m sorry, but we cannot disclose information to outsiders.”
Well, that’s the expected response.
“Unfortunately, I’m actually a staff member of the Hunter Guild, so I’m not an outsider.”
I showed the receptionist my staff ID. She looked displeased but eventually informed me about the damage compensation that had come from the requester.
“That means if the requester says the item is worth ten million Ret, you would make him pay that amount, correct? Is this guild made up of crazy people or what?”
“Mii!”
“A bunch of idiots!”
The hunters in the tavern started jeering and making noise. The boy, confused by the situation, looked around anxiously, so I put a hand on his shoulder and gave him a reassuring nod.
Seeing the situation getting out of hand, the receptionist called for reinforcements—Seltio, the chief supervisor.
“Ugh… why are you meddling in this?”
“It’s surprising for someone of your position to speak so oddly, Chief Supervisor.”
“Oddly? This is a matter of guild regulations. Penalties for failed requests are standard practice.”
“I agree with that. But doesn’t this amount seem excessive? The guild staff didn’t even verify the price, and now you’re saying the boy has to pay because the requester said so?”
“We have received many requests from this particular requester. They are a reputable client.”
“I see. Then let me ask you this: At what price was this high-value delivery accepted, and who authorized this boy to take it on? This clearly seems to be a mistake on the guild’s part.”
“We do not inquire about the value of the items from the requester.”
“I hear that for city delivery requests, they only check things like the route, size, and if it’s fragile. Isn’t this essentially a scam exploiting bureaucratic loopholes?”
“So, Chief Supervisor Seltio, are you saying the guild bears no responsibility for this?”
“…That seems to be the case. It’s according to the regulations.”
“I thought the Hunter Guild’s fundamental mission was to protect all people from monsters. This boy is indeed a hunter with a valid license, but he’s also a person. Isn’t it the guild’s job to protect people from monsters in human guise?”
“Nero, that’s an overstep.”
“An overstep, huh… If the Hunter Guild staff won’t protect hunters who work so hard, then they should just quit being staff!”
“Mii!”
“The Hunter Guild is garbage!”
I threw my identification card at Seltio. The guild fell silent. Many staff members looked disheartened, but no one said anything. Each of them has their own life, and not all staff members may be adhering to the guild’s ideals.
“Hey, kid. Where did you have that package stolen?”
“It was stolen in the alley behind North Six in the West District…”
“Alright, let’s go get it back!”
“But…!”
“Hold on, kid! It’s been a while since I’ve heard such invigorating words!”
A middle-aged hunter from the tavern called out.
“North Six in the West District, huh? That place is known for being a den of loan sharks. If it was stolen there, it means the mafia’s pulling the strings behind the scenes. Clearly, it’s a setup. Right, Seltio?”
“We are simply following the regulations… It’s the rules…”
“Tch, still going on about that? Gather every hunter in the city! We’re going to make these guys regret mocking our fellow hunters!”
“““Yeah!”””
“What… what are you planning to do, Jikmunt-san?”
“I’m going to hunt down the monsters in human guise according to your precious regulations. I’m eager to see how the guild plans to make amends for receiving requests from these monsters disguised as humans. Should be entertaining!”
Seltio’s face turned pale. My condolences to him.
We left the guild with Jikmunt, the boy, and headed outside.
“I’m Jikmunt. Call me Jin. Just so you know, only people I like get to call me Jin. Hahaha!”
This guy is even stronger than Müller… His strength is equivalent to about three hundred goblins. The world is a vast place.
“I’m Nero, and this is Mii-chan, and…”
“Pelo, meow.”
“Mii~”
