Chapter 25: The Citadel
The Government District burned behind them, a chaotic symphony of explosions and gunfire. Wanda Maximoff and Eska Vryn stood on the precipice of Hydra's final stronghold, the towering gates of the citadel looming before them like the jaws of a beast. Reinforced steel, mounted turrets, and rows of Hydra soldiers lined the fortress, their weapons glinting in the flickering firelight.
Eska adjusted her rifle, her battle-worn armor streaked with soot and blood. "Of course their last stand has to look like something out of a bad sci-fi movie."
Wanda raised the Chitauri Scepter, its golden tip glowing faintly as her symbiote tendrils shimmered around her. "I don't know. I think it's charming. Very 'evil dictator chic.'"
Eska snorted. "You would."
The resistance forces rallied behind them, their voices steady despite the tension crackling in the air. Explosives were strapped to makeshift wagons, and grenades were passed from hand to hand as they prepared for the assault.
"Alright," Eska said, nodding toward the gates. "What's the plan?"
Wanda smirked, her crimson eyes glinting. "We knock."
The battle began with an explosion that shook the earth. Resistance fighters pushed forward, their weapons blazing as they laid down suppressive fire. Wanda and Eska took point, charging toward the gates with single-minded determination.
Hydra's turrets roared to life, spitting bullets and energy blasts into the fray. Wanda raised her hand, summoning a shimmering barrier of chaos magic that deflected the barrage. She stepped forward, the scepter in her other hand releasing a beam of golden light that sliced through one of the turrets.
"Remind me to thank Hydra for their contributions to Sokovian architecture," Wanda said dryly as another turret exploded in a shower of sparks.
Eska fired off a burst of shots, taking out a group of soldiers attempting to flank them. "Yeah, I'll send them a postcard—'Thanks for the target practice.'"
The pair moved like a storm, Wanda's symbiote-enhanced agility and Eska's precision cutting through Hydra's defenses with brutal efficiency. A squad of heavily armored soldiers blocked their path, their shields glowing with energy. Wanda's tendrils lashed out, wrapping around one soldier and yanking him into the air.
**"This one smells terrible,"** Fracture hissed in Wanda's mind. **"I'll hold my nose."**
"Please do," Wanda muttered, sending a wave of chaos magic that disarmed the remaining soldiers. Eska followed up with a well-placed grenade, the explosion clearing their path.
The gates loomed closer, their reinforced steel scarred by stray shots and explosions. Resistance fighters pushed forward with wagons loaded with explosives, but Hydra's reinforcements poured from the fortress like ants from a disturbed nest.
"This isn't going to get us through," Eska shouted, ducking behind cover. "We need a bigger opening."
Wanda's smirk widened. "I've got it covered."
Wanda leapt onto the nearest wagon, her symbiote claws digging into its sides as she drove it forward. Resistance fighters cleared the way as she directed the wagon toward the gates, chaos magic pulsing around her.
"Tell me you're not going to ride that thing all the way in," Eska called, her voice crackling through the commlink.
"Of course not," Wanda replied. "I'm not that reckless."
The wagon barreled forward, Hydra soldiers scrambling to stop it. Wanda leapt off at the last second, landing gracefully as the explosives detonated. The resulting blast rocked the citadel, the gates buckling under the force. Flames and debris shot into the air, and the sound of shattering steel echoed through the battlefield.
"Boom," Wanda said, dusting off her hands. "Gates open."
Eska approached, shaking her head. "You're unbelievable."
"Thank you," Wanda replied with a grin.
As the resistance stormed through the breached gates, Hydra's remaining forces rallied for a desperate defense. The courtyard was a battlefield of chaos, with soldiers, drones, and turrets firing from every angle. Wanda and Eska led the charge, their movements a seamless blend of power and precision.
Wanda's symbiote suit shimmered as she darted through the fray, her claws slicing through enemy lines. The scepter pulsed with energy, releasing beams of light that obliterated turrets and drones. Fracture's tendrils lashed out, pulling soldiers into the air before flinging them into the wreckage.
"This is getting messy," Eska muttered, her rifle blazing as she covered Wanda's flank.
"Messy is fun," Wanda replied, hurling a wave of chaos magic that sent a squad of soldiers flying.
**"Fun and delicious,"** Fracture added, her tone gleeful as she devoured another soldier. **"Though I must say, Hydra doesn't exactly taste gourmet."**
"Good to know," Wanda said, rolling her eyes. "You could've told me that before I started feeding you."
The battle reached its peak as the resistance secured the courtyard. Hydra's forces were overwhelmed, their defenses crumbling under the relentless assault. Wanda stood at the center of the chaos, her symbiote suit pulsing with residual energy as the remaining soldiers fled.
A resistance scout approached, his breath ragged. "Commander! We've found something—you need to see this."
Eska frowned, lowering her rifle. "What is it?"
"An underground entrance," the scout said, his voice urgent. "A massive bunker. Bigger than anything we've seen before."
Wanda's eyes narrowed. "Where?"
"Follow me," the scout replied, leading them toward a hidden entrance at the edge of the citadel. The passage was concealed by debris, but the faint hum of machinery echoed from below.
Eska peered into the darkness, her expression grim. "Huh. I guess you were right. Hydra really is just common sewer trash."
Wanda smirked. "That's what I've been telling Fracture this entire time."
Fracture hissed in agreement. **"And their soldiers certainly taste like it."**
Eska sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I'm surrounded by lunatics."
Wanda stepped forward, her expression hardening. "Come on. Let's see what's waiting for us."
As the resistance regrouped and secured the surface, Wanda and Eska descended into the depths, their steps echoing through the narrow passage. The darkness seemed to close in around them, but the glow of the scepter lit their way.
At the bottom of the stairs, they reached a massive steel door. Hydra's insignia was etched into the metal, its presence a chilling reminder of the organization's reach.
Wanda glanced at Eska, her smirk returning. "Ready?"
Eska nodded, raising her rifle. "Always."
With a surge of chaos magic, Wanda forced the door open, the sound of grinding metal reverberating through the bunker. They stepped inside, the dim light revealing rows of machines, consoles, and a vast network of corridors.
"This is it," Wanda said, her voice low. "The Citadel."
